Joel Salatin talks lumber milling

Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms talks about saw milling and value-adding timber products for the farm. He's using a bandsaw from Turner Mills situated inside a shed he built from milling his own lumber.

My first mill was a Turner Mill. Very simple, solid machine. It got me hooked on saw milling. Since I do all mobile milling, I quickly upgraded to a used WoodMizer LT40, better suited for mobile work. That said, the Turner would make a great addition to any farm.

Joel, the act of siviculture IS agriculture .....of trees. Look it up. When you said you "didn't have the words"....that's the word you needed... especially in that MEETING! Rock on!

Silvoculture is generally defined as growing crops in the ;alleys' between trees. You are right, though. He could have made that argument, but timber land is probably already defined in Va. State law as something other than agriculture. Remember, politicians and laws do not have to make sense.

It's farm country here in Winchester, Virginia...and you won't see anyone with portable sawmills. If they have 6000 dollars to burn, they would rather buy an atv or a zero radius lawnmower. Go figure

Little off on his lumber pricing. Framing grade lumber can be bought for 40-50 cents a board foot at any lumber yard. An 8' 2x4 contains 5.33bd ft, so it's worth what it saves you from buying (plus sales tax plus the taxes on your income you would have paid in order to have after tax money to BUY that 2x4....I figure about 30% between the two in my State and income level) 5.33 x 50 cents = 2.67 + 30% = ~ $3.50. STILL not a bad return.....I can saw couple hundred of them in a day, so "penny saved is a penny earned", I can earn myself $700/day (less cost of gas/maintenance/etc) IF I can use the lumber on my place instead of buying it at a lumber yard. Those are the real numbers.

@@MJorgy5 - To play the devil's advocate, they don't think in terms of small, decentralized sawmills, (or anything). They are thinking of a large, industrial style operation. Still... liberty means that you can do whatever you want, so long as you are not interfering with someone else doing what they want. This little mill on his farm does not impede anyone else from living their own life. Except those who want to control others- but that is forbidden in the USA, IF we were honoring our Constitution and other founding documents.

I've done the same I run a local tree trimming business my neighbors nuisance tree become lumber firewood ash chips and cash. I'm looking to expand into more stainable, regenerative, and low environmental impact systems.

The added bonus here is that you can burn the slabs and edgings (and quite possibly even the sawdust, too) in an outdoor wood furnace to heat your home and shop. Practically zero waste, and the bug and vermin attracting mess kept under control at the same time.

This narrow kerf mill produces very little sawdust. What they do produce is probably used for winter bedding. They do make firewood. Even better than outdoor wood furnaces is a good wood stove. Radiant heat is superior to blowing hot air around. Better yet is a rocket mass stove heater, They use about 1/5th to 1/10th the wood. Check it out.

What brand name is that mill ? And does that mill have tires that the blade ride on ? I'm asking because a man that I used to help mill lumber had a mill that looks just like that one heavy steel track and the log stoppers everything looks the same .. and that was back in the early yr 2000

Rough sawn lumber is an industry term that means it came straight off a sawmill.

A simple chainsaw mill is all you need. It will take an entire day to do a tree, but it's also only 150 dollars for an Alaskan chainsaw on amazon, as compared to starting at 2 grand for a mill.

@Pat Collins I built and used a chainsaw mill. I didn't like the waste or excess sawdust caused by the large kerf, but I especially disliked the speed. If I were to do it again and didn't have the $7k, I'd probably build my own bandsaw mill. But honestly, the older I get (I'm 54), the more I learn that it's better to spend money to save time, because I haven't found a way to make more of the latter. 😀
