Re: them still traveling 3 months later: the United States is HUGE. Like, ABSURDLY huge. So if you’re traveling on foot (which they have been since Kansas City) it could easily take 3 months to walk all the way to Wyoming - it’s over 900 MILES between those two locations.
@MDaggatt Жыл бұрын
Yup. Google Maps says it is 1050 miles/1690 km, which would take 355 hours of non-stop walking, or about 14.5 days. If you add in the fact that they need to eat, sleep, rest, hunt, and find supplies, plus they have to avoid populated areas which means they're probably walking through the wilderness rather than on roads, the fact that they made it that far in 3 months is actually remarkably fast. People who walk coast to coast in real life, about double the distance Joel and Ellie went, who have good access to supplies and don't have to avoid infected, usually take about 6 months minimum.

About Tommy and Joel, and the fact that the brother was "living it up" while Joel almost died... that's the thing, Tess DID die because of this trip. Of course halfway through the trip they took Ellie in, but no matter what Joel and Tess were gonna leave for Wyoming with or without Ellie. Sooo technically, Tess kinda died because of the whole Tommy thing, and all in all, I sure as hell agree that I'd be royally pissed if I were Joel. All *that* because Tommy can't answer to the goddamn radio, because suddenly he cares about "rules" yknow.
@annasofie9830 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd be pissed if I were Joel too but Tommy also does have a wife and a child on the way that he wants to keep safe so I think that's why he cares about the rules here... just to be more careful so nothing happens to them. Like, when you have a place like this in a world like that you'd do anything you could to keep it safe, so I really understand both sides here

A big reason for Joel wanting to leave Ellie with Tommy isn’t just because he doesn’t want to lose her and experience that kind of loss again, but because he genuinely doesn’t feel capable - they highlighted this earlier in the episode where he fell asleep during watch. Whilst it does come off as a funny moment due to Ellie’s commentary, it really could have gone dreadfully wrong. He doesn’t trust himself to keep Ellie safe.
@waffleisaloser1569 Жыл бұрын
A detail to note, when Joel says "I'm failing in my sleep" I think it might have a bit of a double meaning. Of course for one, it means that he has nightmares of failing to protect Sarah and failing to protect Ellie but it's also in a literal sense. Joel wakes up to Ellie being in danger twice- once with Henry pointing a gun at her, and the 2nd, yet to come. Both times he's unable to help Ellie in that moment because he was asleep, which is why I think he was upset that she didn't wake him up when he fell asleep on watch duty. Also, the bedroom argument scene was almost exactly word for word recreation of the videogame. Apparently Ashley Johnson, Ellie's actress from the game, improvised it somewhat. Specifically the "Everyone fucking except for you!". On paper you probably would think "that's not where I would put that word" but Ashley was very in the moment and it came off so much like an angry teen who could care less about grammatical errors. I think Ashley also improvised the shove. Great performance by the both of them! Bella Ramsey is doing Ellie's character justice.

I know/feel Tommy isn’t a bad man by any means, and he didn’t mean to be selfish - he was dealing with his own guilt and past and trying his best - but I’m so happy you called him out. I really felt for Joel. As cold as he comes across, and as much of a d*ckhead he can be at times (towards everyone but Ellie, especially, because of who she reminds him of), he really went through a lot of loss that he hasn’t dealt with. He’s a protective survivalist and every time he allows himself to let someone in, as little as possible, he still gets hurt (probably because he is more attached than he let’s himself believe, but also because, attached or not, every loss is a failure like Sarah was). Anywaaay, your reactions are a highlight on this wonderful yet sad journey.

I didn’t realize that technically Tess died because of Tommy. Now I feel even worst after watching the ep. again, if I were Joel I would have reacted even worst after seeing him living his best life. Real siblings know that would have ended in a worst fight. And yeah there was no way for Tommy to know and prevent it from happening, but it’s the fact that even the smallest sign of him being ok through radio would have saved someone’s life.
@brittnianime Жыл бұрын
Right? !?! Tommy acting surprised Joel showed up for him is stupid (character's - decisions - wise, not writing of the show), like obviously your bro who got you through 15+ years of zombies isn't gonna just give up on you. Tommy not being able to tell Joel was lying about Tess, seems like him just accepting whatever Joel says cuz he's not actually interested. Tommy's AUDACITY to bring up Sarah. Tommy's audacity for introducing his wife when HE KNEW Joel meant he needed a minute with Tommy w/o the chick who almost murdered him. Tommy's Wife's AUDACITY to bring up Sarah. Tommy's SUDDEN change of heart when he finds out about the "bigger cause" ~HOWEVER his reaction is still way more tame & respectful compared to his videogame counterpart
@judewatts6942 Жыл бұрын
I feel like it's justified tho regardless. They have mentioned how strict they are with rules around the fact that they can't make any contact from the outside world or else theyll have a target on their back. Then eventually more people will come to Jackson that wouldnt have the same intentions as Joel. Tommy not making contact makes as much sense to me as Henry selling out Kathleen's brother. Tommy is being set up the same way Bill and Henry are where Tommy has so much to lose as well. Not just Maria, or their baby but a whole community of children and other innocent people. Im not as mad at this cause well- spoiler alert Joel does the same thing and protect his own person too with even greater consequences. Thats like the whole entire theme of it all. From an objective standpoint too, Id rather know Tommy was alive and thriving than realize he was dead and we came all the way up to save him for nothing. Imagine if Tess just died only to find out that Tommy was dead too. "Save who you have to save" and well at least Tommy is alive and theres something to live for with that than have the other option of well everyones dead so who do we have to save here. Idk i feel like its a little unfair to see it so one sided that way cause there's more to it than that.

On the topic of the length of the expedition, I've done a bit of maths to work out how long it'd take to get from Kansas City to Jackson, Wyoming. If you were to walk 8 hours a day, leaving 8 hours for hunting, fishing, setting up camp, and the last 8 for sleep, you'd be walking for a minimum of 43 days since the last episode, but that's only if you're walking at a very good pace and following the fastest route on a map. Walking long distances like that you tend to walk rather slowly and given the destruction along the way and having to avoid raiders, slavers, and infected, you'd have to stray from the path quite far. That also doesn't take into consideration the terrain you might be heading through or the weather. I'd say they did quite well to make it there in 3 months.

I think you need to keep in mind with this episode that they were on foot for those 3 months. The US is massive. Even if they had a car it would still take a hot second (also finding fuel could take up time). Also I think I figured out why Tommy couldn't use the radio. You have to keep that place a secret but also Joel was able to triangulate roughly where Tommy used the radio last so I bet other people can do that as well.

3:26 well you don’t rlly know cause you’re not from america, but the U.S. is big, like SUPER big. so it makes a lot of sense that it took like 3-4 months to get from boston to wyoming. they’re across the country from each other. the u.s. is 9.834 km, so if anything, 3-4 months is remarkably quick. especially since they were lost. however, they did drive partially on car so i wonder how long it would take without it.
@xoblythe Жыл бұрын
The main explanation I can theorize as to why Tommy never gave Joel any response through the radio is because anyone, anyone at all, could be listening in on the messages and could figure out where he was and potentially bring harm to the Jackson settlement. He could have been vague, sure, and I definitely think it wouldn't have hurt him to send out an "I'm safe but I can't divulge any other information" message, but it could have posed too big a risk to the rest of Jackson. Not to mention, Joel doesn't strike me as the type of person that would get that message and genuinely believe that it's true. Saying "I'm safe but I can't say anything more or use this radio" would read, imo, as a massive distress signal/red flag and he'd probably still go on the journey to find Tommy.

I love the hair Brad! ❤

I think the reality of the town Tommy found was that they likely told him the rules of living in the town. No communication with anyone outside was part of the deal to stay there. And chances are anyone who breaks their rules are just killed. Outcasting people means they can come back with more. Imprisoning them means you still have to feed and take care of them. So it was either leave on your own and try to make it back. Try to call out and get killed. Stay and start a new life.

The only people who I've seen recognise that it's a panic attack are the people who have genuinely experienced them and go "Oh yeah, that's what it's like." Also, to repeat what everyone else said, America is huge and takes a stupid long time to cross on foot. Typical British pov. Lmao and yeah... Joel's whole story (including Tess' death) could have been prevented by Tommy picking up the damn radio. Ellie still would have been sent West, of course, but not with Joel.

To put it in perspective for you, the amount Joel and Ellie have had to travel on foot is more than going from the very bottom of England to the tippy top.of Scotland

Ya'll when I tell you I balled my eyes out in the bedroom scene with Joel and Ellie 💔💔💔💔😭 I really loved Joel and Tommy's scene in the projector room that was the most emotional I ever seen Joel. I'm with you Brad I didn't like Tommy this episode but I get it.

I forget people from other countries don’t realize just how big the US is. Kansas City to Jackson, Wyoming is almost 1,050 miles on foot. For comparisons sake, north to south England is about 600 miles. It’s totally feasible it would take several months to walk that, especially with no infrastructure and trying to avoid people and creatures

Also this show really isnt about the action and the infected. Its more about the people and their relationships during the apocalypse.

It’s always amusing to see when Europeans don’t exactly understand what a ridiculously enormous landmass the lower 48 states make up

Did anyone else notice that this was the first episode with absolutely no infected or clickers? Such a human, deep story was portrayed here.
