Joel, loved this vlog. One small correction though - the roti you had with the meal is made with 'Jola' (Kannada) which is 'sorghum' in English. We call it 'Jolad Rotti' in North Karnataka, while some may also call it 'Bhaakri' (primarily in Maharashtra or cities of North Karnataka sharing borders with Maharashtra). It is very rich in fiber. Jolad Rotti is a staple food in North Karnataka (Hubli, Dharwad, Belgaum, Kalburgi/Gulbarga and such). Happy eating :)

That is for sure Mylah!! That’s for sure… I can’t claim any of it for myself, I think it’s simply when one is ready to go with the flow, and when one is lucky enough to meet friends, the way that we have, it will result in a great trip. Sarapatel (Portuguese pronunciation: [sɐɾɐpɐˈtɛl], Brazilian Portuguese: [sɐɾɐpɐˈtɛw]), or Sorpotel, is a dish of Portuguese origin now commonly cooked in the Konkan-primarily Goa, Mangalore, and Bombay-the erstwhile Estado da Índia Portuguesa colony. It is also prepared in northeastern Brazil. The word ‘Sarapatel’ literally means confusion, referring to the mish-mash of ingredients which include Pork meat and offal (which includes heart, liver, tongue, and even pork blood sometimes). However, in modern-day version, blood is rarely used as now getting the pure blood is slightly difficult. The meat is first parboiled, then diced and sauteed before being cooked in a spicy and vinegary sauce.

Hi Joel, what you had in the restaurant (with the banana leaf meal) was actually a corn roti (jola in Kannada is corn), and that meal was typical of the food we get in North Karnataka. Coastal, interior and North Karnataka all have very distinctive food (with further sub variations too), so you guys did broadly cover Karnataka representatively from the perspective of cuisine.

Good evening dear Joel - Wow 9 days in India during your recent trip . You could rename this series as “Mark with benefits” . Candid and beautiful reply on What do you think about India 🇮🇳? Handling unknowns is applicable in any new country that one visits . Time for a Plantain leaf lunch . This is common in any South Indian place . It’s a royal feast indeed 👌👌 Jolada Roti meal was quite satisfying for you to relish . In South it’s called a Sweet Paan / Beeda . Quite interesting that you had Sorpotel . This is a Portugual based dish which initially went to Goa and then came to Mangalore . Oh you have got a Veshti / Dhoti for going into the Hare Krishna temple . The Prasadam that you had is called Pongal 😋 I had it this afternoon for lunch 👍 I agree on your reply on the Cost of living index (you can’t have an answer to it unless you have travelled the length and breadth of India ) as you have been only to parts of two states Kerala and Karnataka ( that’s not even the tip of the iceberg ) . Anyways I am glad that you had a wonderful time . Next time around please visit places like Goa , Maharashtra, Gujarat, North India … India 🇮🇳 loves you dear Joel ❤️❤️❤️ Have a wonderful evening . My love to you and Li . Loads of love and hugs 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️

Hi Joel, how does the Sweet Paan at 9:05 compare to the Miang Kham of Central Thailand? I find it fascinating that such a similar item exists in both cultures. On Sorpotel, the Brazil - Mangaluru connection is fascinating. The Portuguese were trading in Mangaluru and Kerala, not just Goa. They took control of Mangaluru in the 16th century. You would have seen their influence in the architecture of Mangaluru. There is another fascinating connection between Goa and The Philippines. The traditional Goan Portuguese desserts of Bebinca and Dodol. I have no idea how those got to The Philippines but these connections are amazing. My two bits, as a tourist in my home country of India as well as in Thailand, I think Thailand is definitely cheaper to travel in. The price of comparable hotel rooms is what makes the difference.

Before I turned 30, I never traveled much, and not counting the week in Alanya (Turkey) I had never been outside of Europe. My first experience of real traveling was a trip to India and Nepal in 2000. It took a bit of getting used to the culture as it is completely different from life in The Netherlands, but I loved it. The food was great; I gained 5 kilos in weight during the 3-week trip, which for me is a good thing .

It is interesting to talk about personal experience because that’s also important! Personal choices can create slight differences, that’s true. in general though, no, Rima what I said is true, it is not my opinion. I’m very interested in stuff like this, so I always check different sources even besides when I’m making a KZbin video. You can check days for yourself on Numbeo, the World Bank website, (PPP and relevant research), or the easiest is Wikipedias annual GDP (PPP) world ranking.

These two countries are quite close actually in terms of cost of living, like I said! So depending on the way you choose to live, yes one could have a slightly different experience, but what I said in the video is generally true (and in keeping with global statistics).
