What's very interesting about Costa Vicentina is that it has been almost completely abandoned by the locals. Up until very recently Costa Vicentina was one of the hardest places for especially young Portuguese to live, as jobs have been limited to farming since basically always. In fact, we were told stories by locals who said depression and a high suicide rate have been at crisis levels up until not that long ago. That's why most have left. Obviously, it's not a problem today since you don't really find a lot of Portuguese people here. We mentioned in our second last video that there is an incredible amount of Nepalese people in this region, so when you drive - or walk - around, you see them all over, as if you are on Bali, not that Nepalese and Indonesians are the same, but it's interesting to see. Anyway, when we say "the next Bali" we mean it in the best way possible, and hopefully Costa Vicentina will never become all the bad things that Bali has become. And I don't think it's going to happen any time soon, since the coast is so long and the terrain in-between towns so rugged. In many ways, Costa Vicentina offers what feels like much more genuine tourism, where it's more for people who travel rather than people who vacation. There's a big difference here, as the latter - at least in my book - is where you come to exclusively indulge rather than explore and connect with the environment. That's all, see you in the next video, where you guys can count your blessings you are not in our shoes 😂!

Hello there. My mother was born on the foot hill of Monsaraz Castle in Alentejo. Alentejo, Baixo & Alto, is the biggest province in Portugal but it is and as always been the less populated. Migration from rural areas started in the 50ties to the end 60ties. The population of Portal has been pretty steady since my parents and me emigrated to the Netherlands in 1970. 10 million inhabitants.

It's hard to became the next Bali because at night even in August is frigging cold.🙂 The south coast of Algarve has a much better whether than the west coast or the Alentejo coast. I remmenber being in Zambujeira and the cars being completly covered with water from the humitity at night... in *August* It's very beautiful to travel... but not the ideal for beach vacation when the south coast of Algarve is so so near

Another just amazing video. So beautiful. I had two thoughts while I was watching it. First, is it just me or are you guys looking much more fit?? Second, I have a very good friend who, for health reasons, gave up alcohol. Yesterday was a full year since he gave it up. Very proud of him. Glad he is alive. Joen. Those of us who know about your decision are also very proud of you. You’re experiencing high levels of stress, but you are not resorting to the easy fix of alcohol. And you seem like a stronger person because of the choices you’ve made. Love you guys.

Thanks for your wonderful support and kind words,Ted. We are definitely getting more fit for every day as we are walking so much, hehe. I would not have been able to do this walk if I was drinking alcohol. By now, I've learned that alcohol is forever detrimental to me, my mood and overall energy, so I don't even think about alcohol. The romance is gone, which I'm very happy about.

Having lived in Portugal for 4.5 years, starting in Lisbon, and then moving south to Sesimbra, Alentejo and Costa Vincentina have become my favaourite place in the world - specifically around Aljezur and surrounding area. It's unspoilt, authentic and really where I am looking to settle. Since then I have aquired a property in exactly that area, working on building a touristic business, both to be a home for me and my family, but a place people can visit to stay and explore what life is truly like in that region. The nature, beaches, food & wine, laid back nature and affordability really make Alentejo and Costa Vincentina shine as an unspoiled paradise. PS, Comporta has already been gentrified by the elite, it's overpriced and frankly not all that impressive, too many mosquitos!

Nice eclectic town and beautiful beach. love the sun set. Places like this need a few good social entrepreneurships to grow a stable and lively economic zone. A lot of places in Europe are loosing their young people due to lack of oppertunity and enitiative as you mentioned. This video high lights your point that beauty is in nature and being surrounded by it. Oh, walking is a great excercise to clear the mind, body and soul.

You're right about everything, Carlos. We love the pure entrepreneurial spirit that we generally saw throughout walking the coast. Costa Vicentina is probably our new favorite area in Portugal.

Hi guys....I've really enjoyed watching your videos, and I'm also happy to see that you've embraced a healthier lifestyle! I've been watching your video for years and can't wait to see your place in Madeira once it's completed, what I've seen so far is so amazing, I can't even imagine being in a house like that! Anyways, I'll be retiring this year (yes, "old" people watch you guys as you're fun and you're real...) and I've decided I'll be going to Madeira next May! ....this year I'm going to Scotland but after I send my husband back home (he doesn't like to travel as much as I do), I'm going to Portugal! and doing the Fisherman's Trail! you probably already know all about it and I'm assuming the only reason you didn't walk on it was because of the baby stroller!....yes, it's stunningly beautiful!, I can't wait....thank you for inspiring me....Sandy in Maine

My dream life was to travel the world and write for travel magazines and write travel articles for others! As it turned out, I met my first husband and got married and had my daughter… so I didn’t end up making those dreams come true. I think that’s is why I love to see young people following their dreams… like you guys, and my daughter!! (And of course I have no regrets with her - she is the love of my life, and I’m grateful for her every day!!) So much has changed in most places in the world, since I was your age. Big Hugs Back XO

I live in South East Asia and Its very difficult to see that west coast becoming anywhere near what Bali is, actually when i clicked i thought you were gonna say “Azores” is the next bali. Its a shame because i like S.E Asia for its energy and street food vendors, but so many places in the algarve / south portugal are like ghosttowns….I can totally see why depression rates are high.

@@joenandamalie What I mean is that there is a difference between tourism and BIG tourism. I've seen it happen to Funchal, as it grows the local population just morphs into an army of waiters, salespeople and tourist guides, changing what the place used to be, which had much more of a mix of trades and people. Tourism in the past turned funchal into a nice town, don't get me wrong, but maybe we have too much of a good thing? Funchal in the 80s and 90s was very nice, the modern funchal is a bit more generic tourist town, lost it's personality a bit. Something similar could happen to the Costa Vicentina. I guess over time it self balances, as locations become more and less popular in a cycle.
