ABOUT THIS VLOG
➡ It's day two of you marvellous Northern Portugal exploration. As if this day couldn't get more packed with epic adventures and hidden gems, we continue to get surprised.
In this vlog we explore the famous dish at Restaurante Tormes while tasting some of the best Vinho Verde on the planet from the renowned Covela Vineyard.
All places we visited stand as highlights, where the beautiful Serra da Aboboreiras was a tranquil addition with it's serene nature and zero people that allowed for a meditative glance on the many layers of mountains in the horizon.
The grand final and probably best part of the already amazing day was to eat at Tasquinha do Fumo, which was the closest you can get to a TRUE authentic Portuguese food experience. The food was some of the best and most tasty we have ever had, and we have had A LOT of amazing Portuguese food!
NEW HERE?
-
We're Amalie and Joen. A Danish couple from Copenhagen who have moved to Lisbon, Portugal.
This vlog is all about showing our new home, how life in Portugal is and of course a bunch of epic adventures around this beautiful country.
We hope you'll stick around. :-)

All over Portugal, actually. What you experienced there is what we, as Portuguese, have experienced all our lives. The family Sunday lunches, the family gatherings whenever there's something to celebrate, the smells of food in the traditional wood-burning ovens (which tastes like nothing else in the whole wide world), the fresh baked bread, the sound of wine glasses when raised in cheers, etc, etc. The good Portuguese life! It's all over Portugal.

"O vinho é muita bom!" You're starting to sound like a natural born portuguese, Amalie! XD 4:35 - Hahaha, never pray for good weather in Portugal or you might get it! And always with some extra degrees! XD Sorry, I couldn't help it. ;D Next time you say something not so positive about the wind generators, Joen, remember this: wind power is currently Portugal's main power source. Wind is free and produces clean power. Having wind turbines sticking out of the landscape pretty much everywhere is a very small price to pay for having a "greener" country. And last, but not least, the pears: they're called Pêras Bêbedas (drunk pears) because they're soaked in red wine before they're cooked. I'm very surprised you didn't like something that has an alcoholic drink in it, Joen. :D

The last part of food you have in the " grand mother kitchen" was my reality from when I was 7/8 years old until my twenties...I lived in a small- "aldeia" - village of Caramulo and the wood oven was used every week or so to make corn bread ( sometimes sweet bread..) and to roast a variety of meats and even fish - sardines on top of the bread....for me this is the real portuguese genuine food...💓

If you guys want to try the best alheira in Portugal you need to go to Mirandela, the city most known by the alheira. Mirandela is further east from Amarante and that region is also very good to have another fantastic experiences. For example: The best season to visit Mirandela is the first weekend of August, where we celebrate the city festivities( Festival Nossa senhora do Amparo). There is an insane night that all the people from the city is outside playing and partying (Noite dos bombos) and the next day the celebrations continues with 1hour of fireworks show at night... Hotel & spa Alfândega da fé (quite near to Mirandela) is an amazing hotel experience. Até logo 😄

Guys, next you have to get yourselves invited to a nice family celebration meal. Real honest humble but delicious one-of-a-kind traditional food. You should get an invitation from a family from each region in the country! And make videos about it. I nominate my family for the annual family picnic in central Portugal! 🙋

STAY CLASSY VLOG just saw the red (wine) in the next video of this series 😁 I emigrated from Portugal when I was 30, 8 years ago, I love watch your videos to soften the saudade. I visited Copenhagen, And loved it, I ate amazing Smørrebrød in a restaurant called Orangeriet. I was also impressed how people left the buggies with babies sleeping outside some restaurants while they were inside (by the windows), it felt a really safe and relaxed city

Yes and he even wrote some amazing poems while he were here. He were supposed to stay only for 35 days but he loved the country so much he stayed longer. All the poems from Portugal is a part of a book that had become quite important to understand the travel culture of Europe en the late 19th century as he traveled every single country of Europe back then.

@STAY CLASSY VLOG It sounded like it.🙂 Regardless on how comfortable they might be with grammar and vocabulary most Portuguese (me included) might have a certain accent and/or be a bit tongue-tied but she seemed to speak like a native English speaker. Nice incursion through other Portuguese flavours by the way! It was like a vloggers' field trip.😉 (Joen was the kid that gets bored at museum visits and starts to clown around.😃) You still have to travel father North and inland where meat is king and regional varieties of cows provide impactful steaks like the posta barrosã (that I don't even know if it's the same thing as posta mirandesa - probably not, they might be made from different kinds of cows 😄🤔). Plus you have to compare the original alheira de Mirandela with the ones you already tasted.😉 And in your exploration of authentic Portuguese cuisine you could also include some dishes that most Portuguese don't get to eat either because they're so local that you have to be from or travel to a specific region to get a hold of them or because they just sound weird. Some examples: bucho, which is kind of a Portuguese version of haggis; arroz de cabidela, made with blood and which is said to be delicious; there's also a blood pudding with rice in it that I don't know how it is called (the regular blood pudding - morcela - is pretty nice though); chanfana, made from old goat cooked in a firewood oven (in wine?) for several hours until it looks as black as the earthenware it's cooked in… doesn't that sound appetising?😜😁 Oh yeah! There's also papas de sarrabulho - I don't know what it consists of but I strongly suspect blood is involved and even the name is off-putting… "Danes Try Weird Portuguese Food" could go viral though…😉😁 Since you were intrigued by what the Portuguese can do with little more than eggs and sugar you might appreciate the gastronomy from Alentejo which is all about doing tasty dished with very little. And you have to travel to Bairrada to have the authentic roasted suckling pig. I'm not a fan of suckling pig myself but that one must be famous and profusely imitated for a reason… Closer to home, even in Lisbon you can certainly find the kind of traditional food the locals eat on their lunch break. The type of comfort dishes that seem (or often actually are) made by a mom. You just have to step a tad away from the tourist traps. I guess you might have already tried the delicious arroz de marisco (seafood rice) but have you had arroz de pato (duck rice)? It's one of my favourites. Also, and since we have dozens of ways to prepare bacalhau, why not make a special food tour episode entirely dedicated to codfish dishes?😉 Besides the pastéis de bacalhau and bacalhau à Brás you already tried, I think you might enjoy bacalhau com natas (or bacalhau à Conde da Guarda, an older version of that crowd pleaser that even kids like). Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá is another simple and tasty classic. You might have already had bacalhau à lagareiro (or some modern version of bacalhau slow-cooked in olive oil) so you might already know it imparts a similar experience to when octopus is cooked that way… Pataniscas de bacalhau are pretty nice too! Other honourable mentions go to bacalhau com broa (cornmeal bread), bacalhau à Zé do pipo and bacalhau espiritual. (I haven't tried the last two and they don't even sound that good but since they're quite popular I might be missing out.) On second thought eating many dishes of any main ingredient might not be such a good idea…🤔 Maybe a better approach would be for you to try the most famous bacalhau dishes doing some industrial espionage in restaurants and then make a video where you recreate your favourite at home… I can assure Amalie it would be far less challenging than making puff pastry at home…😉 Okay, I'll shut up now.🤐😁
