Something I wanted to add is that a common and horrible tactic I've seen from reviewers is that they "mislead by omission." They purposely don't disclose their obviously sponsored videos. They have undisclosed motives and hidden bias towards people and product manufacturers that that bash and bad-mouth. I've seen publications go as far as to omit time-consuming, perfectly relevant, objective measurements because it made a sponsored product look bad. This is disingenuous and evil behavior in my eyes. They pretend to be objective, but they always have a personal agenda. They claim to be on the consumer's side, but they really care more about protecting their relationships with paying customers/companies. This is weak behavior. These people are scared to be fully transparent in fear of losing money. I've seen it in previous industries also. These are the people who end up losing it all anyway, because they're scared, but will never admit it to themselves or to others. They don't have any values they deem more important than making money. Not honesty, nor integrity. Watch out for this behavior. These people hate to see other succeed. Their jealousy and envy are obvious to everyone. But, im just speaking in general terms. 😉 The names aren't important. Look out for this behavior for yourself and you will know the names.

Joe it's OK a rent once a year is fine! However, when you talk for 15 Minutes, you should say the name XY-ZED. If you don't want the drama, smoke, and so an and that is fine. But now everybody will insert the names they don't like, and assume you are talking about them. So you either can stand the heat, make the video and call people out by name. Or get out of the kitchen, and not make a rent video.

@@gaborszabo2880 I made the exact video I wanted to make. If you think I'm afraid to call someone out, you obviously don't know me. I've done it before and I'll do it again if I want to. I chose not to. For the same reason that I don't want to sell you on which speaker to buy, I'm not here to sell you on who to trust. Make up your own mind. You're a grown man. 💯 Joe 👏! Coming from me, as someone who grew up with parents who are very talented with music instruments, a step brother who produces music digitally, and myself attended band class and marching band, I absolutely concur with your video sir 👏🙌❤. When you grow up around actual music instruments and musicians, and know what it means to TUNE your instruments and play in unison while in TUNE with multiple musicians at once, you develop a hearing skill set for what instruments sound like in real life in the most accurate representation. Some folks are even gifted with perfect pitch. I personally take an objective listening approach when playing back content on "x" audio reproduction devices. I like to think I usually don't take a subjective approach to audio playback because anything outside what my hearing has been trained to hear just sounds off to me. You can tell things such as, "X" instrument playing doesn't sound right on playback. The microphone used to record things also determines how something is recorded, some mics record "lifelike" and others record with a certain "flavor\color" of sound. Something I've noticed with many audio device reviewers as you mentioned here is they don't take an objective measurements approach like you've mentioned here for yourself and others mentioned who are doing an awesome job in the scientific approach to this lifestyle\hobby. In addition to that, there are so many folks in the audiophile hobby community that don't have a true "musician" background and therefore don't have, if you will, objectively musically trained ears. Oftentimes they will express their personal "untrained hearing" subjective opinion on how something sounds, or will "shill" to grow their channel. Again, from my musically trained ears anyway, I've found my preferences often closely align with frequency measurements I've seen graphed. I've been messing with EQs so much at this point in my life that I can tell which ranges are set too high or too low. My wife thinks I might have some level of perfect pitch 😆 , humbly I'm not so sure, though I see where she's coming from😆. Just because a speaker sounds fun, doesn't mean it's accurate. Thanks for finally saying what needed to be said Joe 🙏. P.S. I have a new AVR to replace my Elite SC-95 and some other goodies coming in (I'll share in the discord), and I'll finally be able to take advantage of my early bird ordered Spatial Audio Calibration Toolkit 🙌.

When it comes to technology, which is my background, we do expect things to improve. Every year, our phones really do get better. But how much advancement has there been in loudspeaker design, not that much. Some, but not a lot. Most of the advancement is in the ability to get accurate measurements, and for people at home to be able to do good measurements on their own as well. That's why I'm so excited for DSP.

KZbin encourages consistency and quantity. Not inconsistency and quality. Cheap Audio Man is very good at feeding the KZbin algorithm, but he is taking this hobby backwards. And he did it at the expense of all the KZbin reviewers who graciously offered their channel to give him a voice. Nice guy. Funny. I think Jig is up for Randy, or it soon will be. I'm noticing more established KZbinrs venting their frustrations with these light-on-substance "reviews". He's basically the poster child for how not to be taken seriously. Like you said, nice guy and entertaining at times, but losing credibility by the minute. A few months ago, I watched an interview he did with Jason Stoddard of Schiit Audio, and I got the sense Jason thought the interview was a bit beneath him. It's a shame b/c this is his livelihood, but he's doing a disservice to folks genuinely looking for guidance and education on HiFi equipment. He gives a false sense of quality when peddling these Chi-fi brands and claiming you can have true HiFi for dirt cheap, which isn't realistic...at least not without many caveats.

The first time I saw Legacy speakers my jaw dropped by how beautiful the looked on the show room floor. The drivers were all so well put together and their cabinets were a piece of art. And they were expensive, one pair cost more than most people's entire home theaters! When they started the demo I thought maybe they were playing over the wrong speakers because they sounded thin, no low end, and mushy. Maybe they were catering to old rich people with more money than sense, but these speakers sounded horrible and they were charging over 12k for a pair of them. I'm sure they tell potential customers "this is how the artist intended their music to sound" or some bullshit line like that... It was one of those "never meet your hero" moments - in the magazines you'd see these beautiful speakers and assume they sounded as good as they looked - they don't. I was let down and learned then that just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's better - and often times in the audio world that is more true than not true. There is a lot of snake oil and misinformation out there, and very few people are willing to call out the bullshit for fear of losing sponsorship opportunities, or they're just outright paid to lie. Maybe Legacy sounds better now but my first impression wasn't a good one and I struggle to see where you're getting your 12-40k dollars worth of audio.

You hit it on the nailhead! It's flavor of the month for audio gear. And your right, some reviwers are all about expensive gear, which by the way were expensive back in the seventies when I was growing up, much less now with inflation etc. Or they get sucked in by sponships, promoting brands that reward them with free gear. I never was a turntable guy, when CD's came out it was a blessing. Nowadays I checked on amazon for turntables "1-16 of over 1,000 results for "turntables"" or vintage gear going for way more than they were worth new! This "hobby" is not attracting the younger people by far, as even my my grand nephews and nieces have blutooth buds and are happy. Its no longer about the joy of listening to music, but rather with this ( insert amp, preamp, DAC Speakers, whatever here) " I can here the lil nuiance of the drummer shuffling his feet with this gear which I never heard before! Part of that is because the young'uns haven't had the chance to experience actual good sound systems. I watch a lot of music "reactions", of different genres and times, and the number of them that are using lap-top speakers, cheap 'n' nasty earphones or buds - or worst of all sharing a single set of in-ears between two people, so getting a single channel is shocking. I've frequently pointed out that at least buying a few hundred dollars' worth of decent s/hand amp's and speakers - doesn't need to be high end - will give a MUCH better audio experience, even with the lappie supplying an MP3 based source signal to the amp'.

Can't stand audio reviewers who just blabber on about how it sounds to them. It literally takes nothing but a claim to become an "audiophile". Imagine claiming to be an engineer with the only credentials backing them up is the claim. I love what you try to accomplish. What does it scientifically mean for a tweeter to be "bright"? What does it scientifically mean to hear "clarity"? How does science measure "openness" with high end power cords? I recently engaged in a debate with Danny from GR research about what "clarity" is. I merely stated that whatever "clarity" is that's gained from upgrading some binding posts or a power cord can be detected by a microphone. If you can hear it, it can be detected. He said it can ONLY be heard and not recorded...I just couldn't. -_- Im an Engineer and studied advanced physics. I need a little more than broscience.

To be clear, waxing poetic about an audio product isn't easy. I've tried in my April Fools videos, and it takes a while to get in the flow of being full of $#!^. You kind of gotta get into a groove of sorts. ;-) Clarity is easy. It's lack of distortion and unwanted sounds. Unwanted sounds can be reflections that cause smearing of the direct sound. I don't think any binding posts or cords really affect that. Placement, good speaker design, lack of resonance, good room acoustics, your listening position can all impact that. The binding posts would be the least of my worries.

Hi Joe. I'm hoping to send some positive vibes your way. I first saw your channel while my brother and I were talking long distance about building 2 home audio systems. One for his daughter and one for my son. Like a lot of people I'm not in a place where I can go listen to gear so I shopped audio reviewers online to try to get some informed opinions about bookshelf speakers. I watched maybe 8 or 10 different reviews. I found a consensus pick that all said was a true hi-fi speaker at a value price. But I narrowed it further to 3 reviews that gave the good and bad and comparisons of features and benefits with other speakers at a similar price. Your video made my top 3. You gave some of the best information which helped me get past brand names or price points. We picked speakers that sound really good (I finally got to hear them) and fit both systems really well. Our "kids" enjoy listening to music at home more than ever. Thank you for a solid recommendation!

Build quality and finish compares to a pair of Paradigm Reference Studio 20 speakers I paid $1200 for in 1998 (and still have as my daily drivers). I've never been in the "measurements camp" because charts, graphs, numbers, etc., make my eyes glaze over. Yeah, I know I'm handicapping myself. For instance, I would be curious to know if there is a measurable commonality to the speakers I like, but I'm not interested in diving into measurements to find out. Someone else can do that (if they're so inclined) and I'll happily listen to them explain it to me. I think it's kind of funny that you (Joe) are a "measurements guy" and yet, my biggest audio purchase to date was a pair of Larsen speakers I became intensely interested in after watching your review of them. As I recall, you didn't talk much about measurements in that video but you spent a good deal of time describing how the speakers present sound. That was something I could relate to. I ended up buying Larsen 8.2s and I think the presentation is very much how you described it in the Larsen 4's! Anyway, if I never thanked you for hipping me to Larsen . . . THANKS!

Rudimentary? At least I take the time to even do them! And I cross reference by rudimentary "Spinorama" measurements with Erin and Amir's Klippel and they line up surprisingly well. To the guy who got the Larsen's, I did provide measurements of the Larsen 4.2's. it might have been on a separate video. The reason the measurements matter is because it helps describe what's happening. Even if the Larsen's weren't the most neutral, their directivity and interaction with the room is why I liked them so much.

Even though I was disappointed in this video and felt it unnecessary and unprofessional, after reading through some of the comments, I am bewildered by the fact that most of you don't understand the risks that come with naming names. It's one thing to put something like this out there, it takes it to a whole new level to start naming names. What if one of the names mentioned is a guy you trust? That would immediately trigger a divide in loyalties that damages Joe, YOU, and the other party. Now take that and multiply it times thousands. All it does is alienate the fan base and would prove counterproductive in hindsight. I gave up ages ago & went for mainstream regular hifi seperates on my budget as a warehouseman with a redundancy payment from my old company that had to pay me to leave, so that's another factor can I afford what I really want. What I do know is I have just approached 65 years of age with around 25% loss of hearing in my left ear due to my step mother slapping me so often, that's another factor, I bought my first record deck at 17 years old along with Al greens let's stay together vinyl album, 2 speakers & I don't even remember their brand names or rating, I just loved music & not oh dear "they are a bit on the bright side" or worried where the speakers were at the right height & angled. I JUST LOVED MUSIC. Anyhow I slipped into this wierd bull that a lot of people suggested, but rarely do they talk about a great album its normally about the bloody machine that plays what we really want & that's music. By the way mine today is reasonable priced, reasonably matched rega planar 3, marantz pm & cd6007usb with B&W 607s2 anniversaries. Not O.T.T. but my music collection for my partial deaf left earhole is my pride & 48 years of collecting vinyl & cd's, tapes, minidisc, & listening. Thank-you. Your my new regular youtuber.

“His” review did mention you can achieve 98% the same experience at less than half the cost. I think that’s an honest assessment that people DON’T want to hear. Everyone always assumes the highest cost Endgame equipment is actually better. If it’s measurably better, doesn’t mean it’s subjectively better. There’s an emotional attachment to anything you spend money on at your discretion. Measurements are one component of many emotional triggers. Youthman thinks the binding posts on the Emotiva MR1 looks odd. But would he feel the same way about those binding posts if his experience with the RMC1 was better? Keep on keepin it real, subscribed because I like facts and data, as an engineer. I also like shiny bells and whistles and what invokes positive emotional reaction, as a consumer. Plenty of car reviewers out there that don’t know $#!^ about how a car works but people watch their videos cause they’ll never step inside one of the nice cars they’re reviewing…

They don't disclose a bias, a business deal, measurements that would make the product look bad, or other pertinent information. It's done on purpose to keep a narrative to push an agenda. It's often what they don't say that will tell you everything you need to know. I don't know who "his" you're referring to. I didn't watch any particular video that triggered this video. I have had some of my own frustration. I was kicked from a forum because I disagreed with a claim there was no such thing as a fast woofer. This was after accusing me of being a troll. It's not constructive when the experience becomes similar to asking questions on CB radio.
@joentell
@joentell Жыл бұрын
To be honest, I don't love the term fast or slow woofer either. The speed of the woofer determines the frequency that emanates from the woofer. It's ability to start and stop due to inertia has to do with the cone material, compliance and many other factors (T/S parameters). In most cases, a powerful amplifier can control the cone movement and any stopping or starting is probably inaudible to most people. When people talk about a slow subwoofer, they might unknowingly be talking about the inherent delay caused by the DSP in certain subs. The solution is to use DSP in the AVR to delay the other speakers by the same amount. This is by design. Most 2-channel integrated amps don't have this capability, so the subwoofer is delayed "slow" compared to a subwoofer without DSP. The real solution is for integrated amps to be able to delay the main speakers, but audiophiles won't accept it.
@starker1971
@starker1971 Жыл бұрын
@@joentell My general interpretation of fast versus slow is focused on the driver systems mass. Maybe my thought process is wrong. In an analysis, there is a statement that calls the spectral decay plot a decoration. If I understand correctly this is based upon the theory as long as there is high enough frequency response, the decay is largely known. I wonder if there is amble analysis that proves once the frequency response is analyzed, there can never be anything interesting shown in the spectral decay. I would like to see one because I am not convinced. Don't the engineers fight to get the best rigidity with minimal mass ? I think this has driven much materials study. I am also very interested in the effect of signal driven versus non-driven characteristics. My novice hunch is there could be something witnessed in that regard when describing sound characteristics of paper woofers.

Personally, I prefer to hear subjectivity and opinions. Not everyone aligns with what my tastes are and that's the real burden in listening to subjective reviews is that everyone has different tastes. Due to my interest in subjective reviews, objective reviews objectively bore me and I feel like as a customer, there are a lot of important points that objective reviews don't touch on and I shouldn't have to learn about graphs and such. There are many headphones, speakers and such that have a flat level, a harman curve, a bassy thing and all. Yeah it could mean something but there are more dynamics to the sound than the frequencies the setup leans on. One thing that matters a lot to me specifically for IEMs is how far is it going in there? Earbud? Wet willy? Tripple flange ear plug? I can hear my heartbeat? Ear surgeon?! I like Z and Crin for what they do best but they have their specialties on each end of the spectrum.

As a side I was going to get the Klipsch The Fives for my setup but can you recommend a set that is a good all rounder that's cheaper?

I subscribed to you because what you have to say oozes integrity and sheer grit to get it right. If you believe in a product, you say what you mean and mean what you say. A while back, you got it wrong concerning a review on Bose. I believe in Bose and like Bose very much. I have enough sense to know better exists; however, you put your rep on the line and got it right. Your review on Vanatoo T0 was key to my purchase, and I love them. I agree, it needs to be both. Lack of knowledge is self-explanatory, but I find the knowledge > subjective/experience more insufferable. When I am asking questions about something, I am genuinely curious as to why they think a certain way, when I have heard different in real world experience. I have noticed that most of these people do not actually care about what I have said and what I am looking for, but more so on defending their opinions and findings (SOMETIMES ON A PIECE OF GEAR THEY HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN OR HEARD IN REAL LIFE, MIND BLOWING). Protecting their ego and validating their point is all they care about. Reminds me of Engineers. When you go so hard on Objectivity, you loose sight of other things. For instance, I don't like the flat boring lifeless sound so many seem to strive for. I always turn it up to inject some feeling, which I noticed was too loud and too long at times. Sure you can show with measurements if a speaker is energetic or lively, but how much is a different story. Have had speakers blasting rock that made it seem so dull and boring that I would prefer slow and dull music on a lively speaker. At least then, I would probably be nodding my head, where as before I would not so much as tap my foot. Or imaging and soundstaging for that matter. While two speakers that measure the same may image similarly, a more resolving one could have a more dialed in localization of the source, or less noise between the instruments and people. How do I objectively show that there is a smaller point source for each sound/less noise in between. Sure, airy and spacious isn't perfect, but I can read that in 2 seconds, and it gets me closer to understanding if I am interested. I believe your experience and subjectivity should be ever so slightly first. If you are not actually enjoying the hobby or listening for fun, why bother? You can choose not to be the hardcore vacation planner of the audio world, and actually start enjoying that trip (gear) you spent the money on instead. I get it, I love playing with tech and it fascinates me, but I also do that for fun or to serve a purpose. Measurements should give you information, or help you find or tweak little differences in your system. Like finding what you want to change, decide there is a DAC that would fix that, and you would also know what you lose from that DAC, and how that will affect the change. That IS fun, but I would find A/B testing more practical for me, quicker, and much more enjoyable. I guess it comes down to be open minded of others processes and journey, and stop being rude to each other. Give what knowledge you have on the subject with the intent to help. I spend hours researching hobbies, and very few things in it make me feel better than getting a random question, and being able to boil those hours of research and experience into a paragraph (or 4 at this point...) of what I have found, and saving somebody some time while hopefully letting them experience what I do and why I love it. TLDR: Everybody has their own process. Use your knowledge to help give them information to make a decision, even if you don't agree with it. You are here to help people reach their endgame, not sell and validate your own, grow up.

Grow up? You didn't have to end it like that. I'll ignore that for a second and let you apologize if you're man enough to do so. If you have both knowledge and experience, you'll understand the importance of both. If you don't have the knowledge, you can't speak about its importance or lack thereof. I'm here to inform my viewers, not other content creators. I'm here if they want to learn. The books are there on Amazon. The white papers are on AES. When the information is there and "experts" refuse to learn from it, that's their fault and a disservice to viewers.

@@joentell Apologies. "Grow up" may be a little harsh, but I do feel people in the hobby can carry themselves as people better than we do. My above statements show I'm no exception. My issue comes when it goes from people exchanging knowledge (Objective/Subjective/Experience/ect.), and turns into trying to lead them down a path that may have worked for you, and not others. For example, I'm talking about the person who recommends Elac to somebody, after they say they enjoy the livliness of their Klipsch speakers. You can argue which is better for any number of reasons, but at the end of the day, it won't match the voicing they want. I'm not doubting measurements, DSP, or things of the sort. I use a miniDSP in my main system myself. I just don't like when it's used as the end all be all to shut somebody down for enjoying something that measured poorly. If clarity and lowest amount of distortion is the objectively the "best sound" I doubt we would see so many tubes. I just want a community where people respect the preferences of others and can help them accordingly. We will always have biases, and yes the amount of money we spend at times makes us quite protective when we think we are being called fools for it, but this is likely the only place that would understand that obsession. Sorry for the rant. Just fealt a certain way about when I see somebody that can help, but chooses to push their own preference of gear, and ignores what the person said they are looking for. Similar to a reviewer who has measured and listened to a product, has that intimate knowledge to help, but chooses the kick back instead of sharing the former.

Stay away from any reveiwer with a ton of equipment but cant afford a simple recording setup (even in-room response) to back their claims that $6000 power cables make a difference and $8000 speaker cables make a difference. As an engineer who is also well versed in advanced physics, the only channels opinions I take seriously about audio is Joe n Tell and Audioholics. Joe n Tell because he puts forth effort in doing the best he can to scientifically offer you objective opinions. He does what an objective consumer can also do to make good objective choices. Audioholics because he has an Electrical Engineering background and performs actual measurements on cables and offers frequency response recordings. To this day, i dont think ive come across a more scientifically nuanced channel dedicated to debunking audio myths.

And that's just fear-based thinking in my opinion. I think great companies, the ones I want to continue to work with, are open to honest assessment because it helps them create better products in the long run. I'm not interested in a company that only cares about making an initial sale. If that's their goal, they better make a damn good product at a damn good price. 😁

Hey, Joe. Long time no see... I think the main issue is the conflict of philosophies between audiophiles and audio reviewers. Some believes in measurements and science to back up a speaker... Some believes in real world usage more because papers doesn't always measure up and experience shines more... And others are a bit of both. For me, I watch a plethora of people (regardless if it's objective, subjective or both) to get the idea of a speaker that i want to purchase. At the end, I'm a consumer and i need to purchase the product to know the performance and if it's worth it. Plus, I still consider myself as a novice to HiFi and home theater. Lol

I am okay with subjective only people when I get the hang of their reviews. What I mean by that is if I actually get to hear the products and their descriptions and enthusiasm aligns with me. The advantage of the technical reviewer with added subjectivity though is that there will just be more information to look at whether its looking at graphs for comparison sake when comparing different speakers on the same rig and room etc but still that has to be taken with a grain of salt as well because there are so many different rooms, different measuring rigs etc... So in the end everyone just has to be honest and we the viewer have to do the work in comparing firsthand with what reviewers say to confirm if we can trust them moving forward.

I'm ok with subjective reviews. But how many try to pass their opinions off as facts? That's when they cross the line for me. I like to hear people's opinions. That's a human thing. But sometimes I want to see their claims backed up, the way I expect a manufacturer to backup their claims.

@@joentell I experienced a situation where a reviewer, who shall remain nameless, thought a little too much of themselves and their opinion to possibly consider someone else's science based nugget of info. The fact that they were the reviewer meant only they could possibly know what they were talking about, and their opinion was above everyone else's, giving little thought to their audience having auditioned or purchased the equipment. The made a bold claim and defended it stubbornly to the end.

We need more people who have your approach, and not just with audio, but with reviewing generally. There is subjective opinion, and there is evidence. While subjective opinion is not worthless, it's just about worthless. If a reviewer says that a piece of audio equipment is deficient in some parameter, but then does not support that statement with some kind of objective evidence, then of what real use is that statement? Like you said, not everything can be great. A reviewer can point out factual feature points ("This amp has no DAC"), but sometimes the reviewer, rather than simply making a factual statement like that, will convey negativity about the component in general. The most honest opinion is still just an opinion unless it's backed up.

I watch a lot of different YT channels, so I can imagine who you're referring to. ... That said, specific references to channels and videos would actually help me and others know what exactly you find as the most frustrating examples of fluff or straight-up lies. I also get why you might not want to do that too, but a video like this would be many times more useful if you did provide specific references. For example, I do watch Amir, and he is not afraid to directly cite a manufacturer's claim and (politely) rip it apart, even when it has created controversy. You could kinda do the same thing by at least referencing, if not fully critiquing, various other YT videos... if you want.
