Great to see you this fine day Joe. That mahogany machined up really nice. I can't see any tear out anywhere. A combination I have always liked is a base of Tung Oil to make the character and natural color in the wood "POP" with a polyurethane (Helmsmen exterior UV resistant) sealer. It is a really nice combination. The effect would be much like the one way you have gone. Initially the build didn't look all that complicated but considering you made everything from stock another closer look and "WOW" or "OH MY" for lack of better words. Every time I visit here is soooo relaxing. Thanks for that eh. Now you will need to keep it behind glass as everybody is going to want to handle it and those nasty fingerprints will be all over this beauty. The next project in line sounds like another fine piece in your Lilliputian line up. Thanks again and take care my friend. See you next post.

Your commitment to document these things is amazing. I am guessing the documentation added tenfold to the making of the project. Not only are you VERY well versed in your craft you are also a gifted teacher. And beyond that a very generous person. Thank you from a hobbiest machinist that has far more knowledge than skill because of people like you and Tom Lipton, among others. Just so you know there are thousands of us that truly appreciate your channel

Here's a tip for you Joe. If you want to paint/stain all sides of a part, make yourself a yard long board with a series of tapered posts along the length (I use old artist brush handles). Then, once you've painted the underside of the part, seat it firmly, through one of the holes in the part, on a tapered pin. Then that frees you up to do all of the other sides without getting fingerprints in the finish (and getting paint all over your hands 😄).

This turned out to be a great project. Im very impressed. The brass is contrasted very well by the stain of wood. I havent watched the whole build, but when ever i have, great lessons in miniature milling and turning, also from your past project like the shaper machine will certainly be used. Thanx for all tips and advice

Thanks for watching. I've always loved the dark wood and brass contrast ever since seeing a classmate make a chess set the same way. One side was brass and walnut, the other side was cherry and aluminum. Stunning.

Try natural woodstain cup of spirit vinegar dissolve a bunch of steel wool in it. Paint on and dry makes a very dark c Colour on most woods.
@Bobs-Wrigles5555 Жыл бұрын
The vinegar would turn the brass pink, even if he repolishes the brass, the humidity in the air would cause the vinegar to reactivate and the brass touching the wood to go pink on the edges again, I don't think that's the look he's going for.😉

@@joepie221 Yes brilliant Joe and giving gratitude in some form or other to the forgone skilled craftsmen and craftswomen who made these cannons on a mass production scale with very primitive woodworking and metalworking tools along the Navy personnel that used them in anger to keep the sea's safe from enemy attacks so many generations before you and I ever put tool to metal, or something like that. It would be very nostalgic, very cool and educational to the younger generation of today. Tony

I like wet sanding it with Tung Oil to fill all of the grain and then apply top coats of Tung Oil until I'm happy with the look. I don't like boild linseed oil because it never really hardens. I think what you did looks good, but I just wanted to give you an idea of something to try if you do this again.
