HI, Joe! Great little cannon -- I built the smaller one in Joe Martin's book a number of years ago, as a Christmas gift for my Dad, who was a Hornblower fan. It also had brass wheels. When you fix the trunnion to the carriage, make sure you mount it so that the trunnion is below the centerline of the bore. It doesn't really matter on a non-firing replica, but on a firing cannon, the recoil forces would tend to lift the barrel and carriage off the deck, and flip it over backwards with the trunnion above the centerline. With it below the centerline, the cannon would be held securely to the gundeck by the forces of recoil. There is a company called South Bend Replicas up in Indiana that makes Civil War era full-size muzzle loading cannons, on some very large antique machine tools. If you can find one of their old catalogs, it is a treasure of pictures of manufacturing the replica tubes. They used to have a bunch of videos on this platform, showing the manufacturing process, but due to the current climate, I think nearly all, if not all of them have been taken down.

When he was doing his tool-making apprenticeship my brother came home one day with a 3/4" steel turned cannon barrel he had knocked up while his lecturer was looking the other way. It only had an 1/8th reamed bore with a touch hole, must have been 7-9" long. Anyhoo, being 'creative' we used red match heads and 1/8th ball bearings for ammo, until out firework night in november, then we tried it on actual black powder from bangers, it would pierce both shiplap walls of the shed! All highly illegal here in the UK but the recklessness of youth eh?

The banding on the barrel is probably a hangover from the first, wrought iron guns (which really were made like a barrel). The guns on early Tudor ships like the “Mary Rose” were made from bars, forged (by hand) to a segment form cross section and upset to form the breach; they were then locked together by bands hammered down the outside exactly the way a wooden barrel would be made. A lot of early metalworking was adaptations of existing techniques in wood, so adapting your metal techniques to carbohydrate foam is almost traditional :-) As an aside, the term cannon can be thought of as equivalent to the way a modern naval gun would be described as (for example) 15” 45 calibres (the diameter of the tube is 15” (nominal) the length is 15 x 45 = 675”; the consistency isn’t quite equivalent (pre-standardisation); but terms like cannon, culverin & carronade tend to describe different ratios between length and bore.

Beautiful job Joe. But ship model making is a hobby of mine and the cannon barrel was always hung by the third, meaning the trunnion should below the center. Is it possible your barrel is hung upside down? Otherwise perhaps you drilled it in center of the barrel.

I am making it from a leftover piece of oak shelving but using a vacuum to collect as much of the waste as possible as it comes off, oak is acidic and you don't want it on your machine tools. If you are videoing this work then a constant vacuum hose in view will spoil the shot. Images and videos of this engine (by others) are available in the internet.
