I'm just going to say, I love David. I'm a Blackman that was born and raised in LA, and grew up listening to him in junior high school. My parents moved to Pasadena where I got a job at Musicplus, and he came in and we struck up a conversation. He asked me what's new thing that people are listening too, and I had been waiting for the Temple of the Dogs album to get released, and had just dropped. I recommended that to him, and the next time he came in he yelled out where's Bill. He gave me props. It made my century. What a down to earth cool man!!!!!!

Omg the last couple minutes he mentioned a piano at Auschwitz. My grandfather was one of the US soldiers that freed the prisoners. When I was a boy I remember in his story he mentioned a prisoner auditorium. He said they were clearing buildings looking for Germans hiding not knowing they had fled. There was a stage with a tarp covering something big. His buddy aimed his rifle while my grandpa quickly pulled the tarp off. He said it was a ‘beautiful piano’. He tapped a few keys and it was the best sound he ever heard. In his Italian accent he said ‘Can you imagine after all the filth and hell, bombs and bullets, what that sounded like to us?’ Thank you for this interview DLR.

I really appreciated what he said at the end - which teared me up a bit because it was real. A lot of musicians never had any skin in the game. His stuff in Van Halen was balls to the wall. wow. I cant say how much respect I have for DLR and VH. I grew up with their music. I gradated HS in '77. I grew up in Hacienda Heights SoCal when backyard parties with live bands and keggers were the norm. It's no wonder they blew the doors off any competition of that time.

At least MA had a harmonizing voice that made a signature sound.

When your talking about DLR , about 10% of people who take the time to drop an opinion areas on the fence. They can take him or leave him . About 20% can't stand him , and the other 70% ( such as myself) love him. I'm one of the worlds biggest VH fans still to this day , almost as I was in my teens thru my 40's. My favorite member has always been the engine of that Formula 1 racing car Eddie. Dave was a close 2nd. Those 2 together did more for rock music than 80% of even the most die hard of VH fans will ever know. I made it a mission to dig into this bands history , their bio's and most anything I could get my hands on. When I see a person wearing an old genuine concert shirt that you can't get anywhere else, I offer to buy it off of them on the spot ! How many people you know are that ridiculous ! I don't live in LA , and I'm not $$ loaded , but I have still managed to have seen them 14 times in concert , including seeing them 3 time in a 5 day span (long story), so if you want to know anything (within human reason). Just ask away. Getting back on track , I have DLR's disease, which has me getting off of the subject and rambling on a bit , but their history ranks among the top acts to have ever climbed onto a stage . Eddie commenting on Dave said it best in an interview once. Somebody asked him about Dave antics to which Eddie responded ,. "" His rambling on and his Attention Deficit Disorder, you ask "" ? Well , Ive been asked that many times and after thinking about it so many times a., I guess I would describe it all like this...... Don't mistake his antics for lack of intelligence. Dave is very creative as I think him and I have made some great music together. So just remember that he's creative, intelligent, and overall a well read guy. But sometimes something short circuits and he has a little trouble connecting all the dots "" !

I ran into Dave at a bar in NYC once & spent some time having a drink w/ him. He is nothing like his energetic, crazy, non stop public self. He was by himself, quiet, introspective & sweet. It's really a trip to learn that the horrors of WWII helped spawn the utter global joy that was Van Halen. Fate works in very strange ways. Everybody talks about Roth's ego, and it did reach historic proportions, but when he was young and hungry, he was real smart and humble to soak in all that information from available dojos as he calls them. 1978, I was 19 and in the Air Force in the middle of nowhere called Altus OK. I went to a party at a beat up old house that looked just like the Delta House from the movie Animal House. At one party in one night, I got turned onto Van Halen, AC/DC, Rush, Montros, and yes Journey. I was never the same after that party. A few years later when I was out of the Air Force, The first two concerts I ever went to was Van Halen, Diver Down and Jump. It was awesome. Dave was incredible.... now were old.... but still rockers! Thanks Dave, thank you so much.

My dad was the original keyboardist, Jim Pewsey. My mom, Lana Soisson, knew the brothers and band too. She had nothing but nice things to remember about the Helens and their family. I dont know Dave, but Im assuming they both had similar personalities and clashed. 😂Lol. Probably the best interview I have seen of David, this was totally heartfelt and from his heart. He is reliving those memories as though they were just yesterday. When he spoke about being a performer and how it relates to the audience, I get that. There are good bands that come and go, but GREAT bands, far fewer to be sure, Van Halen and DLR are one of those great bands.

What Dave got right from the start is that he wasn't a singer. He was an entertainer. With a gargle whiskey and broken glass for breakfast blues voice. Coupled with the best technical guitarist in the world that no one knew about yet. During an age of punk when good musicians tried to hide it. There was just one of him and the band Van Halen in the whole genre. They would become a genre. Quiet Riot, Motley Crew, the entire Sunset Strip scene and hair bands all happened because of Van Halen. I'm not sure they would have without VH's contrary success.

No question LA hair metal would not have existed without Van Halen (and no band ever equalled them, though songs here and there were great). I was a kid when Van Halen came out and I saw the imitations start flying into and through the entire 80s. It became why an underground started and eventually spawned Nirvana 13 years later. It was inevitable VH would be imitated when a band hits with that much force and success. Metallica would have a million imitators also. I enjoyed Dave's voice because of it's roughness. I still listen to those old school Van Halen songs and like his gargling broken glass voice. And of course EVH on lead guitar. The backup bass and drums are not exactly impressive in terms of showing off like Eddie and Dave, but they are technically perfect.

Dave has lived a very interesting life. I remember hearing an interview with him where he said he knew early on he didn’t want to use his fame and wealth to get “things” like houses and cars, etc . He wanted to have experiences. So he took treks through the jungle, did mountain climbing, was a paramedic for several years, moved to Japan to live and study. He’s got some quirks but the guy has lived a very interesting life.

Grew up in Pasadena. Dave’s dad, who was a doctor, came to a career day event at my high school, and was telling us hilarious stories about being a doctor, including getting his son stitched up after getting into a scuffle. He was a pleasant, humorous, and rightfully proud man and father. RIP Dr. Roth. Long live Dave.

DLR was heavily influenced by BOA front man, Jim "Dandy" Mangrum (Black Oak Arkansas). Dave's never admitted it but if you're 60 or older you know what I'm talking about. BOA was one of the first Southern Rock bands - a back woods, Arkansas based hard rock band featuring a charismatic, wild front man w a lean muscular build, skin tight spandex, no shirt who pranced all over the stage like a peacock. Ted Templeman's book and Van Halen Rising by Greg Renoff really made me realize Dave's crucial importance to the ultimate success of the band and gave me great respect for him. Renoff's book clearly shows they may have never made it, despite great, great talent, without Dave's perseverance and cheer leading, let alone his skills ultimately with lyrics and showmanship. I love both versions of VH, but without Dave, we may never have heard them!

My dad was the original keyboardist, Jim Pewsey. My mom, Lana Soisson, knew the brothers and band too. She had nothing but nice things to remember about the Helens and their family. I dont know Dave, but Im assuming they both had similar personalities and clashed. 😂Lol. Id love to hear and know stories of my father, from his high school band years, he spent his life dreaming about. Even if they are not "good" stories. He passed away in a car accident, but always wanted to play one last time with the band. ❤ 😊
