Duncan hit the nail on the head. "If you're depressed, you're stuck in the past." "If you're anxious, you're stuck in the future." "If you're happy, you're living in the present."

What if these emotional responses are evolutionary. There is pain in not living in the present. I realized, not too long ago, that the only thing in the world that you can control is yourself. Simultaneously, the only person that can make you happy is you. The person that makes you unhappy is also you.

The moment at 45:55, when Joe says, "Um, I don't think you should say that, I think we should edit that out..." A perfect encapsulation of exactly why I love Joe Rogan. The tone, inflection and timing of the delivery work perfectly for my sensibilities. Also a great example of why I like this show. He seems like a big kid who's getting away with something. And really enjoys it. Not only doing it, but the fact that he's getting away with something by doing it.

Duncan's notion of coming back to the present moment definitely had a touch of something valuable in it, but I've found that I am much more easily able to embrace the present moment when I really zero in on my dreams - of realizing great depth as a painter, not a potter, but the aspirations definitely support my effort to stay present. And I definitely feel happier when I'm being very effective with my time, which means being present.

The way Duncan described the "intellectual hoarding" and videos/documentaries is basically how I feel watching anything, including this podcast. I've been watching a whole lot of them since I discovered them about a week ago

If you consume enough fluoridated water it will actually make your teeth look rotten -fluoride poisoning. I don't find there to be any rational, or even remotely justifiable, reason to consume fluoridated water. What makes the situation dire is that it is added to the water supply with no way to opt out other than workarounds like filtering the water at your end. My dental health is my own concern, I live with it, I pay for it and I can make my own choices about it. I find this situation to be rather criminal in a free society.

The lost pharmaceuticals discussion reminds me of how ancient Romans ate silphium (a plant with a heart shaped leaves) to extinction because it was an effective contraceptive. Its also the origin of the simplistic ❤ shape we use to represent feelings of love now. Edit: i fact checked myself, it was the seed pods that were heart shaped, not the leaves.

24:20 Champs Elysées translates to Elysian Fields, not Elysian mushrooms. It does however refer to the same Greek myth of Elysion, a safehaven for the 'blessed' (those with a higher understanding of the world and it's metaphysics).

Duncan is my favorite on here hands down. This is one of the best podcasts I've listened to from Joe. So true what they discuss regarding why people are discontent with their lives living in this artificial environement we have been trained to believe. Why so many people unexplicably give up and surrender to taking their lives.

I remember setting on my motorcycle at a light, and hearing brakes and tires squealing. The hair on the back of my neck stood up, as I saw this car barroling into me. It hit me, and it stopped at the same time. It only broke my tail light, and I had to buy a new seat and change my pants.
