Well, are you aware....Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts, collard greens, kohlrabi, and several closely related vegetables originated from the same plant species, Brassica oleracea. Its wild form is known as wild mustard and still exists today. Humans began altering its genetics as early as 20k years ago
@squirlmy4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you're slyly suggesting an intro to "selective breeding compared to genetic manipulation", or seriously devoting a whole episode to vegetables. I remember being pretty frustrated when learning Darwinian evolution, having to get caught up on animal domestication and breeding because Darwin took those metaphors to its limits when describing natural evolution. Tedious! Learning about GMOs is similar. To really understand it, you need to know both the latest tech of DNA manipulation, and the old-fashioned genetic manipulation through selective breeding. It's a lot to take in.

1:17 Ceres was discovered waaaaay before Pluto. Sorry Joe
@dwc19644 жыл бұрын
I came down here for this. Ceres was classed as a planet when it was first spotted, and then Vesta (I think that's the order). And then they started to find lots of other objects in the same general orbital region, and realized there's a whole "belt" of these objects between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, and reclassified Ceres and Vesta from "planets" to "asteroids" as part of the "asteroid belt". Kind of like what happened with Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. Except I don't remember hearing about anyone losing their minds about poor Ceres being "demoted" or whatever. Maybe because it wasn't named after a Disney dog. I don't get this whole emotional attachment to objects in space, "identifying with" them or feeling bad for them being reclassified based on new knowledge or whatever.

@@dwc1964 I kinda get it, because it's Yay Democracy!?! Sorta. Beats apathy, anyways. I think the size of Ceres and Vesta, from ordinary lensed telescopes had been underestimated. Now people are beginning to realize that science requires updating one's knowledge constantly, and one can no longer stay on a desert island and learn about the world from an encyclopedia (as one of the Bond girls, who was supposed to be super smart)

Personally, I never got too fussed about Pluto's demotion to King of the Dwarves. Existence never has given a toss about taxonomy so why should we, especially about things not mission critical to immediate survival, like, for instance, classifying snakes correctly is significant in its immediacy; venomous snakes which bite any 'prey' that moves, bad; certain other snakes which actually target species we consider to be vermin, good, hence putting "lie" to the 'see a snake, kill a snake' adage (at least in the eyes of intelligent, observant minds). Brown dwarves may have been discovered in 1994, but they were hypothesized much earlier. Jill Tarter is generally credited with the modern theory. I know this cuz, as a young & budding novice astronomer, I mentioned them at a lecture I attended and was soundly rebuffed by a grumpy graduate student. I'd just read about Dr Tarter's idea either in Physics Today - I think, it's been a while (1970s and all) - thought it was cool but I was, eh, a little ahead of the curve. Also, it's not just Lithium they mess around with. They are thought to fuse Deuterium as well at lesser masses so they're definitely funky objects, and one of the reasons I was so fascinated by them. Science! Showing you that you really don't know all that... since... well, since we've been paying attention.

I remember as a young kid, many, many years ago, looking at a depiction of the planets in a book, and noticing that Pluto was entirely unlike all the others. The others had similarly elliptical orbits that were not too far from circular, and they were all on the same plane - but Pluto's orbit was very much *not* on that same plane, and its orbit was so eccentric it crossed Neptune's, making it the 8th "planet" for much of the time. *Pluto, as a planet, never seemed right to me.* So I'm glad they found all those other objects out there that do what Pluto does and reassigned Pluto to its proper identity. As a planet it was the runt oddball; now, it's the King of the Kuiper Belt. Good for Pluto!

Hi Joe, You are a bit mixed up about Lithium. Stars BURN Lithium, they don't produce it. (Lithium is thought to have been produced in nucleo-synthesis in the Big Bang.) Lithium 7 will fuse with a proton, and form two He4 nuclei. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_burning In regular stars, Li in the outer atmosphere of the star never gets hot enough to burn. In brown dwarves, convection goes right to the core so the Li is burnt up. So a large super Jupiter WITH Lithium is a planet. A large super Jupiter with no Li is a brown dwarf. A small star with no Lithium is a star... but for old small stars, convection goes deep enough, and for long enough, can deplete the Li in the stars atmosphere, so the Lithium test is imperfect for small stars. Warm regards, Rick.

The main issue with some random strangers deciding that pluto isn't a planet any longer (aside from the obvious issues regarding old works becoming incorrect, a schism in the present as ppl who doesnt know the change continues feed incorrect info, and future issues from different definitions than past papers), is that those random strangers holds absolutely no authority on the matter. I could _potentially_ accept it if it were nationally supported (by england, australia, america, and canada (and why not eu, for the hell of it)) linguistics redefining the english language, though even that is a bit iffy. But the issue is just that, it is a language issue, and language is far from anything absolute and noone has any real authority on the matter. As such, pluto is still a planet, I declare. I too am a random stranger, so I hold just as much authority as those who said otherwise. Except I have more, as historically my definition has been correct. Hell, I am of half a mind to decide that any celestial body that orbits a star, is to be declared as also a planet. Meaning each asteroid in our suns belts will need a proper name, and to be taught about in grade-school. Though I rather not, as 9 planets tied to ancient mythos seems like both a nice number and a nice rationale. Edit: "might be a ninth planet out there" *Yeah, you mean pluto?* "orbiting in a big orbital circle" *ah, you mean like how the theorized planet X (or planet 10; as in roman numeral for 10 and smartphone brands) does? Didn't know there was another.* "they call it planet X" *wait, did you not just literally call it a ninth planet? Shouldn't you say Planet IX instead of EX?*

I think they prefer the term “Middle-Eastern American Dwarfs” actually.

When astronomers look at brown stars and also red stars, they are not looking at the stars actual surface, what they are really looking at is the stars really large atmosphere of anode plasma sheath which glows red. This means we don't know the actual size of these stars. Also these stars can have planets orbiting inside the atmosphere of anode plasma sheath and if there's earth-like planet orbiting it, anode plasma sheath will provide even heat and light to life on the planet so no winter season. Downside is such planets are difficult to spot with telescope due to orbiting inside the red glow. Astronomers have highest chances of finding earth-like planets orbiting around brown and red stars. Check video by physicist "Wal Thornhill: The Star ‘Proto-Saturn’ | EU Workshop".

So...you're saying...quite possibly...Brown Dwarfs are where we'll find Dilithium Crystals?

So.. they're basically Duergars.

Telling someone not to put things in boxes is like telling someone to not be human. Not only is it impossible, its denying something that makes everybody's lives easier. We should just accept that categorizing comes with being human.

"Planet Nine" as we call it this decade is confirmed to be much to small to be a Brown Dwarf (Even a very small one) This is a very out dated theory conceived when we didn't know the size of the object. (or if it was even real) The term "Planet X" and these ideas for it are already just outdated. Current understanding of the object puts at likely either being a super earth, about half way between Neptune and Earth in size, or possibly even a bowling-ball-sized primordial black hole. Some interpretations of the data even suggest a second mars sized planet 10 might be out there with it.

Woo-woo doesn’t factor in when it comes too the astronomical amount of brown-mater..😑😑😑🤓

Saying a planet has dwarfism is just another way of offending planets with a genetic anomaly. Next thing you know there will be retard planets. I sure hope not.
