Everything will end. Even the universe. But in a future so far away that it defies description, there will still be light and therefore a chance for life. It will be around White Dwarfs, the corpses of stars. But even they will fade one day..

Well, it depends. The expansion of the Universe doesn’t really affect galaxies themselves(because I believe Kurzgesagt was talking about nearby stars), because they are held together by a gravitational force, which we believe is caused my dark energy or dark matter. In exchange, stars are close. The quickest way to get to Alpha Centauri would be through sails powered by ground-based laser propulsion, reaching Proxima b in around 20 years. This is so short, in the universal timescale, that we might have expanded beyond the Orion spur in a few thousand years. But, if you’re talking about stars in other galaxies, even travelling at the speed of light, it would take you billions of years to reach Andromeda, because of the expansion of the Universe.
@tomlxyz
@tomlxyz Жыл бұрын
@@condor5912 it's only held together by gravity. Dark matter is an explanation why there gravity seems to appear stronger in the galaxy than can be explained by visible matter. Dark energy is used as an explanation why the universe's expansion is accelerating

Well... Extrapolating that far ahead we wouldn't even be human anymore. But you're right, assuming we made it THAT far (which is really hard to imagine!) and became a Type IV Civilization... I guess we could do a lot of things. Tunnel to another Universe... Perhaps even create our own bubble Universe... And yes, transmute dead degenerate matter in black dwarfs back into hydrogen to kick off new star formation... As Type IV... We could practically do anything! But we currently got our work cut out for us... Stuck at Type 0.7x (or thereabouts) we are dangerously close to a threshold which will either transition us to Type I or... Type 0 (I.e. Extinction!)

@Molybdaenmornell
@Molybdaenmornell 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jeffy-331 I will start by saying that I, too, have a positive outlook on life. Having said that, I see about 5 bugs and can only envision the defeat of one of them: 1.) biological aging -- possibly fixable 2.) Lethal accidents and diseases. There's no such thing as safety and the longer you live the higher the cumulative chance of dying violently or of sickness, even without aging. As the duration of life approaches infinity, violent accidents become a virtual certainty, no matter how unlikely they are in a given period of time. 3.) Food scarcity. If people keep being born and no-one dies of old age or accident, people will eventually die due to food scarcity. This is true even if we colonise space, because population would rise exponentially but the amount of space available only increases polynomially with time for any given speed of exploration. 4.) Death of the sun. Nothing we can do about that except flee the solar system, but the same will happen in any other one. 5.) Heat death of the universe. I will not rule out that there is an afterlife in a form not subject to laws of physics, but I have no reason to believe that there is any life after my death except that of other people. And that is something, isn't it? Love others, love future generations, and death ceases to be as much of a tragedy. And by the time they cease to exist for the above reasons, we won't be around to be bothered.
@adivwastaken

@@Molybdaenmornell it's the way of everything that exists, whether it's every dog to every start or Sun. Death is beautiful in its own ways and we need to live our life in a way that nobody on earth is living a life not worth living. I used to think like you as well, but thinking more about it you start understanding, and the constellation of life starts forming, the beauty of life would never exist without the harsh truth of death. After all, we are just a small dot in all of existence and we will never know if more life lurks around there, life is beautiful because it is limited weather god exists or not (probably not).

Ricky Bravo Yeah, when I first learned about this I kinda did, and it made me realize that the way the fundamental laws of the universe work have consequences, but then again it's not something you and I have to worry about. Way, way before this humanity will have to deal with the death of the sun in 5 billion years, and before that with possible meteorite impacts, like the one that made the dinosaurs go extinct, and before that with the crazy climate changes the planet will go through from now until the death of the sun. I think humanity can survive these things... unless we end up killing ourselves in nuclear wars or something haha.

@TacoMastersAssociation

This is absolutely the most perfect time to take up the opportunity to change society, so we could progress even further to a better tomorrow. Don't be afraid that you want change. Change is needed, anyways. We won't get anywhere unless the majority of everyone gets along. Besides, you can be the next person to push us an inch closer towards planetary and galactic travel. All it takes is one step.

Whippybox_grHD! Lmao "bad taste in music". Do you think music is getting worse as time goes on? Because if that's the case, you're just lazy and not looking hard enough. As more people exist on Earth, more kinds of music from more sources will give way to much more variety and, inherently, more good music. Anyone who thinks that the popular Top 40 that people get the most shared exposure to is representative of the overall quality of all music being produced at that time is a fucking nostalgia-plagued dumbass.

Please do a video about how a civilization could survive beyond that point. I´ve read that it is theoretically possible for an advanced civ to harvest the energy from the spin of a black hole, and its hawking radiation. This is my first youtube comment ever and I´m happy to use it to give you guys a video idea and to tell you how much I appreciate your work.

The problem with hawking radiation as an energy source is that only very small black holes emit it fast enough to be useful, and the smaller they are the faster they decay, so it's not a great long term solution. But it'd still make a great video.

I love that established theories tend to break down every 50-200 years or so due to new science coming to light. Especially now with our technology increasing so rapidly. I'm no scientist and don't understand the mathematics of it all, but the "end" of our universe could be vastly different than is portrayed here. It makes sense everything would eventually burn through its energy and go dark, like the aging and death of cells in our bodies. We create different forms of mathematics to explain the "exceptions" to various universal laws. I'm unsure if there are any true exceptions. Seems more to me more likely that we have just yet to truly understand it all. I don't think I ever would want to understand it all. I love the mystery! Have a blessed existence, everyone!
