Outboard water pump impeller in a 4 hp Johnson straight shaft (non-weedless)

It was requested that I do a water pump in a 4hp so here you have it!

hi, i recently started watching your videos and appreciate your info! currently trying to replace impeller on a 1966 evin 6hp and run into trouble. lower unit is not dropping. i tried some wooden wedges to apply pressure but no luck opening enough gap to access shift screw. i did fine with older johnson 9.5 but this time i run out of options. any suggestion? thank you, a

do you have any clutch assemblys for sale? i think I screwed mine up heating it up to break it free from the crank (i should have left it frozen on once i got the drive shaft out)

Great Video! I have a similar motor, and I'm currently trying to tune the carburetor. Could you let me know what the tuning turns are for the slow speed and high speed is? The only info I've found so far is a carburetor tuning for a 1957 Johnson 7 1/2 hp. They recommend 1 1/2 turns out for low, and 3/4 turns out for high. Would this be the same for the 1971 4hp? My 1983 4hp evinrude has no hi speed needle. Low speed needle seems best at 3/4 turns out from full seating...

Also doing a full replace of all seals on the lower unit...water in gearcase syndrome.

The high speed and low speed set screws? Can buy a carb kit and comes with bushings to go in there.

I have a 1950 Johnson seahorse 5hp tn26, it needs a new FLOAT in the carburator, do you know where I CAN GET ANOTHER ONE??? if they even make them any more, cork that is. If not, is there another kind of float I can use to take its place ???? The one it has, LOOKS JUST LIKE WINE BOTTLE CORK, I bought this Johnson seahorse for $50.00 bucks. just have to give it a tune up.

The drive shaft may be stuck in the crank. Was it in salt water or on for a long time?

THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY, I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT THE SALT WATER, I JUST BOUGHT IT USED. THAT IS WHAT IT SEEMS LIKE THOUGH, I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO TO FREE IT UP WITHOUT BREAKING THE ALUMINUM BY PRYING. I MAY DROP THE GEARS OUT OF THE BOTTOM END TO SEE IF I CAN TAP ON THE DRIVE SHAFT IN HOPES OF BREAKING UP THE CRUD THAT MAY BE HOLDING IT. HAVE YOU EVEN SEEN THE WATER TUBE BE SEIZED IN PLACE? THE DRIVE SHAFT IS TOUGH, BUT IM AFRAID OF SCREWING UP THE WATER TUBE.

Well I got the lower section off the bottom of the column but the drive shaft WILL NOT separate from the engine. Any ideas?

Pulling driveshaft out is a catalyst for a full expose of the gearcase!

+joeseif My 1972 Johnson 4hp was blowing only a trickle of water from the exhaust ports. I took it apart following your advice and was surprised to find the impeller looked good, there was some blockage of the water tubes which I cleaned with pipe cleaners and reassembled. Now lots of water out the exhaust port and head temp around 170 F. so appears to be good for now. Thanks again.
