Very, very clear, I was able to follow every step with my speed square and a demo piece of wood. I am not building a coop or chicken mansion, but a free-standing awning at my front and back door. this has been the most simple version of a single angle roof I have been able to find. Thanks so much

I just stumbled upon your video, and glad I did. The way you explain each step in simple terms is outstanding, especially for those like myself with limited building experience. This video would have been a game changer for me when building my 10 x 24 firewood lean-to shed last summer. The idea of doing birds mouth cuts intimidated me, so I used hurricane ties instead. The way you explained it and the detailed use of the speed square (never knew how to use one) was excellent and I would have given it a go. I just kept shaking my head while watching this and kept thinking, I would have done a few things differently with my shed (like adding the purlins to accommodate a longer eave) cause you explained its so well. I have only found a few channel to subscribe to, and you have now been added to that list! Thanks, and looking forward to checking out your other videos.

I am honored to be on your sub list! don't beat your self up I defiantly went over board on this build (always do). Plus I knew I was going to move it around with the tractor so it needed to be strong. for a wood shed straps will work just fine.

I truly respect old world craftsmanship, always admire diligence in appearance and fit. You are definitely a craftsman. With that said, and considering time is valuable and sometimes more modern brackets are exponentially more robust than wood to wood fitments, I’d point to the use of metal prefab brackets between your top plate and rafters. Sold by most lumber stores, they are called “18-Gauge ZMAX Galvanized Hurricane Tie”. Sell for $1.25 each. Huge time saver, bearing strength of 1100 pounds each.

Crown your boards the same direction and that direction should be upward so it doesn’t look like it’s going up and down going across the top from side to side.
@toddconrad1426
@toddconrad1426 3 жыл бұрын
@@troyna77 the ten degrees is for the 2/12 pitch and it is also for a metal roof so don’t use it for a shingled roof. Buy a speed square and use the common section and the pitch you use just look at the degrees below it and it’ll tell you the matching degrees when you’re lined up on your common pitch at same time so you’ll know how to set up skill or table or chop saws pitch.

I believe using the diamond hole on your Swanson speed square could facilitate drawing the seat cut line on your birds mouth cutout. The Swanson handbook says it's a patented feature. Just learning and studying rafters and not experienced, just what I read. Haven't tried it myself. Could save a lot of time and seems easy to do.
