Oh man hearing that character select music again just unlocked so many memories. I wasn't really into racing games as a kid but for Christmas one year my uncle handed me two ps1 discs in funcoland sleeves, Ray Tracers and Rage Racer. I played the hell out of those games and the music for both was superb.

Always appreciate you getting into old stuff I can check out that isn't covered to death (I like to think I have a pretty broad knowledge in general and I don't need someone telling me about Gran Turismo). I like to try and cover some of the lessor known stuff with a mix of the more known! Which is why I did Syphon filter over splinter cell!

Arcade racers still exist, check out the indie developers on steam because they are trying to develop racing games that are just like the old days. All isn't lost.

I picked up this one for cheap at my local game stores a few years ago. It just looked like a fun racing game and it was only $2.50. I only played it for a little while but I did enjoy my time with it. Nice to see a review about it and bring it more people's attention. I recommend checking out Tokyo Highway Battle on PS1 as it's one of early games in the Tokyo Xtreme racer series. The music in Tokyo Highway Battle is awesome.

I need to correct you on something we HAD a large variety. These days there are few and far between with most being sim-cade or full sim, except the trash on the mobile market. Never knew about this game but it's reminding me of Ridge Racer Unbounded.

Burnout devs stated that the inspiration for the franchise was an arcade racer "thrill drive", it gets pretty disturbing when you crash, changing the tone and music of the game.

It such a shame we don't get these type of action arcade racers anymore. You should probably check out Pursuit Force & it's sequel Extreme Justice.

Have you ever played NASCAR Rumble for the PS1? Despite the name, it really has nothing to do with NASCAR, other than the car liveries. The game itself is pure arcade racing, and is the closest thing to a Burnout game on the PS1. By default the game has Mario Kart style powerups, but these can be turned off. Frankly, I find them more annoying than fun and prefer to play without them. The tracks have jumps, hidden shortcuts, objects to smash through, etc. Plus, the graphics are pretty decent. There was a spiritual sequel on the PS2 called Rumble Racing. It also had powerups that could be disabled.
