Dang. The fact that this game feels a lot like Ridge Racer and somewhat the good fun of wrecking cars before the Burnout days (and it's 1996!) is a feat to behold :)

Had this when i was younger, this review gave me the small nudge i needed to re-buy it when i found a complete copy for 6.99. Thanks Mark and CGR for reminding me of this ps1 gem! (and god knows how many others) Btw the green car is the best imo as well, handles the best.

I'm not sure what that green bar on the left is, but being an audio person, the little red rectangle at the top makes me REALLY uncomfortable -- it looks exactly like the "over/clipping" indicator on a peak meter. I just... need to... FIX... IT....

Played this game sooooo long ago... Glad that emulator exist... Beat the game on hard mode (manual) and unlocked a secret car via time attack. Buffalo is by far the most drivable car. The music is also very catchy.

How did you record it via component cables? Damn near every ps1 game I tried refuses to work with my recording device via components. Select few like Valkyrie Profile actually run that way but only on menus and cutscenes which are higher rez than the rest of the game

kinda reminds me of riding bean. I woulda liked to see this get some sequels so that they could develop the formula because it looks like a lot of fun while having some great potential

At around 3:20 it is said that there is not much replay value. Their are 7 endings (one for each character/car) so plenty to keep you returning to the game for a while and Hard mode is quite easy once you have unlocked the Vestal/Maki. This was a great game for its time and I don't think we see enough pick up and play Arcade style racers / shooters today.

I used to play the shit out of this game. Not sure but was this green car the special one you get from the time attack or something? I recall it was much stronger than the standard choices. I'm sure there was one or two unlockables.

How can you play PS1 games on the PS2 with component cables? That never worked for me. I used to get only sound and I thought it was because PS1 resolution is too low and doesn't work with component cables. So I had to go back to using composit. Anyway, I have a PS3 now but I'm just curious.

+Veselin Krastev The PS2 plays Ps1 games in 240i/288i, some TVs and devices recognise it through component, while others don't. In fact some PS2 games like ICO run at 240i and can't be read by some TVs as well. The PS3 on the other upscales PS1 games to 480p - 1080p, which all HDTVs can recognise. The issue is 240i/288i is a very uncommon resolution today, especially with consumer electronics using component.

Wait, this game works with component cables? Weird, non of my PS1 games will work unless my PS2 is hooked up with composite or S-video.

I believe you can, you first need to plug your composite cables, go to playstation 2 menu options, there should be a option that lets you change , something like component video output, you change "rgb" to "y/pb/pr" , then plug your component cables you should be good to go, i personally use RGB, scart and the image its really sharp and nice :) , i think component its better for consoles that support progressive scan...not the case of ps1 :)

Bernardo Assis I did that and all my PS2 games work just fine with component, but I have to switch cables when I play PS1 games since only half the picture shows up. Maybe it is something to do with the region, I'm NTSC so that might be why. Doesn't matter too much though since the main PS1 games I play are the old Driver games and I've been meaning to pick them up for PC anyway. I have three PS2s and a PS3 and Driver gets horrendous slow down on all of them.

scottthewaterwarrior Wierd, oh i have driver on ps1, game has tons of slowdowns, i don't think its ps3 or ps2 issue anyways ahah , its the game itself :) But i think between svideo and component you wont notice a difference, like i said , no progressive scan on ps1 so its useless :)

This was an awesome little game for the PSX, I enjoy it a lot, you can view the cutscenes in my channel, and there is also the japan exclusive RAY RAY cd rom which allows you to view the never-before-seen artwork of Ray Tracers from the dev team themselves, you can download the iso in THEISOZONE web site and check it out!
