The Bic M10 is an absolute classic. The pen of my childhood.

The BIC M10 is really a true classic pen like the BIC Cristal. I've had bad experiences with it at the office, as has a colleague of mine. They are very fragile in the center where the clear part begins and often broke in the middle when writing. I always put a lot of pressure on a ballpoint pen, just like my colleague, but that should have no consequences. I also write differently than how people should write according to schools. Namely with the thumb under my index finger, which gives you more support while writing and prevents the pen from shooting out of your hand, which bothered me a lot as a child from the second year of primary school on. Here in the Netherlands you learn to write with a pen from the second grade of primary school and you are only allowed to use a pencil in the first grade.

I remember seeing the M10 when I was a child. This would have been the early 1970's. If I am not mistaken, it was called the Bic Retractable back then. I have found a stick pen from Germany. Steadtler 430 Stick. It's clear like a Cristal, but much more robust in build. The ink is a lighter blue and does not skip or blot.

If I remember correctly, these were marketed as "the most eaten pen" in the Netherlands about 20 years ago. Most users over here tend to bite on the top end and leave bite marks. That's what they're famous for over here.

@Marc Caldwell i used to lick, eat prit stift which is a glue stick. It tasted a bit sour, but good, and yeah i am dutch. Later we found out its used to glue paper. Holland is a funny country in 1997 we found out a car is used to drive, before that we used them al paper weights.

In the eighties, I was a teenager and I remember having a pair of "BiC M10" with blue ink, unfortunately I have never been able to get that model in my country or in the place where I currently live. However, one of the pen models that reminds me the most is the "BiC Bu3 Grip 1.0mm", since it has a retractable system very similar to the "M10", it feels like a mixture of the "BiC M10" and the "BiC Atlantis" Medium Point.

Well I have a bic clic pen with a yellow barrel and blue ink fine point. I have brought some with me from New Zealand to live in France. Here in France there are the M10s but only with 1.0 mm point. The fine point pens were made in NZ, now made in South Africa. But it seems that single colour fine point BIC pens are not available in France, the home of BIC!

I didn't know Bic made retractable version... would love to try one! I love those nostalgic Bic Cristal "Fashion" edition pens... the pack that includes fuchsia pink, dark purple, robin's egg blue, and light green... none of which make much sense tbh. The pack also lasts like 15 years! And of course after that markpoint, you just have to go get ANOTHER pack of them...

A little flame will often loosen up dried ink in a pen. Just not too much flame or you'll melt the end of the pen.

The button also popped back while writing and therefore the filling, which I have seen not only with my colleague but also with others.

I prefer the full size Pilot G-2. I prefer the 1.0mm one. Best ballpoint writer I've found. These pens come new with a tiny plastic cover to the ball -- to prevent the ink from drying out, i suspect. My daily writer is over a year old and is almost out of ink. Works just as good now as it did when I first put it into service. A nice fountain pen substitute.

I spent much of my childhood annoying the hell out of myself by clicking that tempting little button on the side of the M10 over and over.

Cristal still my favourite. M10 will part in two sometimes.

You can get ten for a quid here (UK, that's about $1.20 US). It's the best fidget pen in the world. Writes like a Parker too.

I used the M10 style of Bic for many years. A problem with it is that it's easy to trigger the side-mounted retract button while you are writing, which is a nuisance. I gave up on all of those messy, leak in your shirt pocket, Bic type pens decades ago when pressurized gel pens were introduced. They have loads of benefits over the old Bic type, and suit my handwriting style much better, too.

Amusingly, Olivetti made an M10 laptop 8-bit computer in mostly the Italian market in the 80's, which was another rebranding of the Kyocera 85, just like the TRS-80 Model 100. So, an M10 is on my want list, but just not this M10. :D

Good review. All of them standard oil based ballpoint pens except the G2, it’s a gel pen.

I've often wondered why Bic has such a dizzying array of regionally specific pens - and why at similar price points, ballpoint quality varies widely. Even in the U.S., the company's choices are like the menu board at a fast-food franchise: Way too many choices to make an informed decision. Bic should take a cue from General Motors and list its offerings in boilerplate copy that clearly indicates the target market. GM ads listed the vehicle lines in ascending order: Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac. I guess this would make the Bic M10 an Opel.

Some countries have different pens. The m10 came out in 1956 I believe but wasn't sold in the US, we got the Bic clic (a little more upscale) when compared. Back then people in the US liked having a little flash in their writing instruments. The reason there are so many choices for Bic now is really simple, there is enough of a market for each and every pen they have that they contain to make each little one. The only one I don't understand is that they make the m10 but they also make a Bic Cristal click that has a little more ink.

Only drawback with the m10 is that it, in my experience, easily cracks at the tip when dropped

I've found that pens with black and blue ink seem to be the most reliable writers regardless of brand....when you get into other colors like red, green, etc. they're not nearly as reliable. I assume it has to do with the ink properties of the different colors. Pilot G2's seem to be the worst for not writing reliably after not being used for a while. The Zebra pens I've found to be pretty reliable in black but other colors are very sporadic in their operation after not being used for quite a while. The Bic Cristal Stick and Round Stic have always been my disposable go-to pens over the years. The Bic 0.7mm Mechanical Pencils have always been my disposable go-to pencils over the years, except I reuse them, I just take out the eraser and refill them, I just use a different eraser so that I can easily take out the erasers to refill them. The Bic Cristal Stick and Round Stic both use the same ink cartridges, you can interchange them between the 2 pens. It looks like the M-10's use the same ink cartridge as the Bic Soft Feel.

I agree. Red and green ink ballpoint pens seem to write the worst.

I'll always use ball point pens. I can't write well with gel pens.
