This knife is differentially heat treated, so it is pretty much expected to react this way. Edge is very hard, if you abuse it, it gets (microscopic) cracks but the cracks stop at the transition zone between hard and soft steel, if you then whack it on the spine it will open the cracks and split the knife like an axe does wood. (EDIT: Only some of their sales texts mention this, not all sellers do - someone on bladeforums mentions the transition between hard and soft is at the fuller, which would be a bad, very bad choice) Differential hardening also explains why it chips on the rock and why it still bends instead of breaking, only the edge is hard, just like with japanese swords - those things bend like clay if they get a bad sideways impact and break after only a few spine hits at the most where a through hardened blade will survive a lot longer (if it has a good spring temper maybe even longer than you have the energy to whack it) at the cost of being all over softer. It might not be as tough as a through hardened blade in some ways, but if the whole knife would be the same hardness as the edge, it would likely have broken already at the car. I get that this might not be what you understand as a tough knife, but it's totally expected for a differential heat treat with a very hard edge to fail like this. They did some design overhauls it seems which I imagine was to increase breaking resistance. The fullers on the old one had pretty sharp corners, which are stress risers and can lead to cracks, the newer fullers are rounded annd not as deep, so better for structural integrity.

2/2 with garbage heat treatment on this knife. This seems like a good place to mention that a bend is a failure just a much as a snap is. Mileage will vary some depending on use case between those for whom a snap is the more dangerous fail and a bend is the more dangerous fail. One can kid themself, but not nature, with bending a tip back the other way. It is super weak at that point. Many comments around here make me think there are some who don't know the difference between bend and flex. People who evidently are liable to kid themselves by bending it back. Sort of like Joe does, when in his case it is just for the sake of testing. See it most with people complaining stainless snaps before bending like if that, in isolation, is a bad thing. What matters is the amount it took to cause the material to fail more than the mode of failure - again, pending use case and which is more dangerous for you. But thinking something is fixed when it is very much not is prone to being a trap leading to the most potentially dangerous fail.

People say that these tests constitute terrible abuse and they're right, but 1075 with a soft heat treatment should never break. At worst it should bend. I've had full length machetes in 1075, 1065, and 1055 that you could not damage in any way if you tried. The Ontario machetes were 1095 and even with those, I could keep one in a freezer overnight, then immediately run out and smack it as hard as possible on it's side against a telephone pole repeatedly and not break it. Bottom line is, if a carbon steel knife with good tang geometry is breaking from anything then the manufacturer is doing something very wrong with either the forging or heat treatment.
