You may say you hear Herbie Hancock, or Bill Evans, or Thelonious Monk, but really what they heard is what Joey hears. When I first heard this cut I immediately thought Stanley Cowell, Lyle Mays,, or Joe Sample. But the bottom line is that we aren't hearing other artists, we are hearing what other artists and Joey Alexander are hearing. It's not the sound of the past or the future. It's an authentic depiction of the present. And that's what the greatest artists hear, the present clearly.

@j5555785
@j5555785 4 жыл бұрын
@@foun10head yeah, sure theres nothing groundbreaking here. In Jazz (and most any other genre today) I'd say groundbreaking no longer sounds good. In Jazz groundbreaking means its mathematically impeccable, but impossible to listen to, unless you are one of these nerds who pretend to themselves and the rest of us that they enjoy the abusive dissonance. Groundbreaking is the academic pitfall that pulled Jazz out of common cultural appreciation. As far as good groundbreaking is concerned I feel like early smooth jazz was groundbreaking before it went commercial and became a garbage sound. I mentioned the guys I did because to me it seems Joey is going to be picking up at a spot where those guys left off. At least for now. Who knows, he may get academic on us, become groundbreaking, and help keep jazz tucked away, understudied and underappreciated.

There's a certain joy in his playing, whether it's the grinning and nodding he does with the other musicians he's playing with, his phrasing, his sense of melody and timing, or just the way he can throw everything he has into a run, you can tell he's thoroughly enjoying himself. That's what music's all about, after all, isn't it? This kid is going to be an absolute giant in the music world. I just hope he's ready for it.

Wow, the comping groove "feel" during the percussion solo is incredible. I played daily for a month straight with an Indonesian drummer that played with Joey during his early formative years. I got to ask him many questions about Joey. Apparently, his growth from decent player to an amazing full- developed player happened in almost a season. There is a prodigious aspect to his playing, but there was a leap that happened so I've been told. Btw- there are a lot of great Indonesian musicians out there. Steinway sounds great too. Impressed with the piano tech. World-class player and piano!
