If you look at sportscar series like IMSA and the World Endurance Championship (WEC), there's no standardized engine rules. OEMS can build whatever engine they want in addition to a hybrid component. Right now, both series are going through a golden age with endless manufacturers entering. OEMS look at NASCAR and think the standardized V8 engines don't suit their business plans and are needlessly expensive. NASCAR is going to have to embrace loosening up rules if the automotive industry remains unsure for many years

Especially since guys like Toyota have actually dumped the v8 from their trucks, like the tundra, etc. this makes a V8 not relevant to their brand anymore. With that said, may as well bring some imsa cars of different classes, and try them on some ovals.

Eric you definitely called it on McDowell. I don’t blame him one bit. You would think they’d offer him a multi-year contract since he’s brought a lot of success to that team. I only hope NASCAR doesn't get too hungry for a new OEM and lets them walk all over. The idea of several demanding a hybrid format change to commit is a major undertaking/investment We just got the Next Gen, had to do a fix that NASCAR paid for due to the concussions of 2022, have negotiations going for broadcasting, and now there's a call for hybrid only half way through the 3rd season of this car. I could understand a dedicated series, they've been toying with that idea for years now, but another major overhaul on that car while costs are the primary issue for teams...I just don't see how that's sustainable
@elijahjp2158
@elijahjp2158 28 күн бұрын
I'm pretty sure that when NASCAR built the Next Gen car, they were keeping in mind the possibility of new manufactures. I think this car can transition into a hybrid a lot easier than previous generations, so costs might not be nearly as high since it was built with any future technological changes in mind.
@NeedsLessWedge
@NeedsLessWedge 27 күн бұрын
@@elijahjp2158this is right. You don't see solid axles on hybrids or EVs. The independent rear was a necessity. If they bring hybrids in, I hope it's a few R&D cars like they did with Le Man's. Or make them their own class, like formula E.

Hey Eric! Different manufacturers with different power? Don’t let that scare you. That’s what it used to be! That is what made NASCAR great! You are part of today’s audience that looks at racing like life. Sameness, equality, blah blah blah. Mandatory data sharing? Crazy! This is racing. That’s how brand identification drove NASCAR popularity for decades. When they started to eliminate brand identity is when they tried to replace that with “superstars”. Embrace difference!
@nomadman5288
@nomadman5288 28 күн бұрын
NASCAR needs to focus on right now and making the current product the best it can be rather than trying to predict what another OEM might want. Put eyes on the sport and OEMs will want to be a part of it to put those eyes on their brand. It's that simple.

I know I'm a old head, but can anyone else confirm when the Busch series ran V6 and V8 engines? I believe it was some time in the early 80's or late 70's. The weight requirement for the V6s were lower due to the lack of power and to try to even the plane of racing. Remember oval racing is a race of momentum! You don't necessarily have to have the most powerful car. That's how Junior Johnson found drafting back when they race convertible cars! I believe in IMSA Racing with multiple manufacturers, there again were weight penalties for turbo and non turbo cars, 6 cylinder cars versus V8 engines.🤔 So anything is possible for the future of Nascar. Sorry to say but the traditional push rod V8 is going to phased out in the future. 😪

Could go back quite a few episodes back where it comes to Logano where I said my thoughts and say again: The 22 team has been a struggle even in their championship season. He was able to place as he did because other teams were inconsistent in the season. But as 2023 and now showed, that inconsistency is the thing that is constant while all the other major players have shown up race after race. I maintain my statement that Joey's season is done. Even if he wins, that inconsistency is NOT going to put him past round 12 or surely 8. If he wins and not "just" by strategy, he will have to do a LOT to be relevant for playoffs... and I just don't see that happening.

I think manufacturer is being allowed to run different engine packages would be a pretty cool idea. Watch Honda show up with a twin turbo V6 going up against Camaro V8. But I think something else that would also help is if the manufacturers had more control of the bodies. Even though the manufacturers have more control over certain parts, like the nose, I feel like the roof line and some other parts are still too generic.

Getting deeper into the numbers, NASCAR could set a maximum bore size of 3.847" and stroke of 3.25", for 302 cubic inches displacement (5.0 liters). They would have to run 10300 rpm to get back to the same power potential that the 2-valve pushrod engines have. And no flat cranks to keep them from sounding like buzzy 4-cylinders. I can see Honda, Nissan, Mercedes, and BMW being interested in building an engine like that.

I love the idea of manufacturers developing their own styles of powerplants. I disagree that it's a variable that we wouldn't see. A car's unique powerplant is a huge talking point in the auto industry. Even when buying a car, especially a performance car, odds are the seller is going to point out the drivetrain to the potential buyer. And what better way to convince consumers to buy their product than by putting it on full display in competition? This would be awesome to see.

Ford benefits from the current points system in nascar. They could afford to use 2/3rds of the season just for development, get a win right before the playoffs start, and turn it on when it counts to win the title. Team Penske is no stranger to this as that’s basically what they’ve done the last 2 years. Even in 2018 with the new Camaro we saw this. No wins for 5 months, then Elliott wins at Watkins Glen, and wins 2 races in the playoffs and nearly makes the final 4.

I don't have all the stats on Ford overall from this season to last. It may be that 2024 in Cup is worse than last year, but the performance has looked remarkably similar. Logano won Atlanta last year, but that's a wild card now with the super speedway rules. Ford didn't win again until the 600. We've now seen Buescher come extremely close to winning and he stayed up front a while. Prior to Kansas, I compared the first 11 races for Logano from 2023 and 2024. If I didn't make any errors, despite his win last year, he was actually just slightly better this season compared to 2023. That Atlanta win took some pressure off, but he's been running about the same. Regarding rules changes and new OEMs, I like NASCAR being flexible on things. For example, on scheduling, I like when they shuffle things around and I'm far from a traditionalist. I'm okay with the idea of new engine types as long as the competition is maintained, even though I prefer the classic pushrod V8s. I just don't want to see changes that reduce competition or make the racing worse, to me. One thing I don't want to see is a push-to-pass system. There are those who seem to want it, and I don't think it's going to have a positive effect on the racing product, and that's not factoring in the recent scandal with it. I've never liked the idea of it unless it was a video game like Super Off Road or Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat.

Ford is AWFUL, and that has clearly affected Penske (except for Blaney) Glad Cindric has more raw speed this year tho. Hope he and Logano can start having more speed so they can make a push towards the playoffs, but with Ford, I doubt that.

Another option since Nascar uses a transaxle now would be to switching to IMSA engines which would automatically open the door to several new OEM's and the Chevrolets could run the Cadillac engine. Indycar has been discussing this recently about redesigning the whole car or engine bay to accept all IMSA engines for that very reason.

I stated my point. NASCAR wants to keep spending under control? Well, hybrid cars will cost a lot more. And especially on the team side. New engineers will be needed. New infrastructure. New type of training. Reconfiguration of simulators. New tyres. It's already a "rich man sport". But it will get worse... way worse

6:57 Then they need to go to an overhead cam engine which is cheaper to get more HP out of anyways than the old pushrod engines if getting a new OEM is what nascar really wants.

Different power plants under the hood would be wonderful. V8 push rod engines are the past. Fuel consumption would be the biggest hurdle with different engines. You could have one run whole stages without stopping

I think Michael McDowell move to Spire is a good move. I wonder when Spire contract with Chevy is up. Ford i think is going to run better in the second half of the season. I wonder if Darlington will get Ford's first win - would be funny if all 3 series were won by Fords. Now, Race Hub on Fox is fine, however, cable is not what it was. Streaming is big now..I mean, ANYBODY can start a show, right Eric..🤓

Thoughts: Nascar BOP. A BOP similar to DTM's BOP. The winner gets a weight penalty. Or a BOP track by track like IMSA/WEC. There are 3 different manufactures why not BOP each engine manufacture differently?

Innovation is what draws in new manufactures. Try it on the track today sell it in the consumer vehicle tomorrow. NASCAR hasn’t really done any innovating in 40 years so no wonder we get stuck with the same manufacturers and can’t attract new ones. NASCAR seems more open to trying new things lately and other manufacturers are keeping on eye on it.
