1:25 That "famous painting" is called The Creation of Adam done by Michelangelo and (I think...) it being recreated here is meant to show the relationship between man and God, specifically how Adam the first human was alowed by God to keep his forbidden knowledge after he sinned (again I think, been a long time since I took Art History in college!), and it in a way mirror's Light's and Ryuk's relationship. Or it could just be religious symbolisim for the sake of religious symbolisim, Japan has a habit of doing that in their media...

You need to remember that openings and endings in anime have to be 1:30 long. They're all 1:30 reditions of songs that are 3, 4, 5 minutes long, so some music choices are only there because they have to shorten it.
