Hey FIT-GAMERS,
In this Fight Scene Breakdown, we take a look at one of my favorite films of all time, The Dark Knight. Batman fights multiple opponents in this fight scene and quickly dispatches them using Keysi. We break it down step by step in slow motion for you all to understand the choreography...

Allot of die hard fans really love the "Batman V Superman" warehouse fight scene. Because he mows through the thugs like a tank & it's brutal but he also seems impossibly strong, near superhuman. I want to say captain America status physical levels. Which people will say "Batman trained himself to caps level" which is great but not realistic. Bales Batman always felt more realistic in his physicality & combat skills.
@JoeyBslash3

Indeed. TDK trilogy had a bit more realism to the fights than BvS. Although, I do like what they did in the fights for BvS. Two different choreography styles that did very well for their respective films.

+Jimmy Hu True. This is a common occurrence in choreography of fight scenes similar to this one. However, would you be so hasty to help them out if Batman was tearing them apart? You're probably not getting paid enough to have your arm/leg broken or to sustain a severe concussion, not to mention no martial arts training to help you out. When you think about it that way, it makes a little more sense lol

BRO!!!! The use of the elbows and feral movements in that fighting style is gorgeous, and Christian Bale trained so hard with this style like a pro during practice fights for Begins and Knight, his tactics and moves against his enemies is absolutely precise. Also, KFM is used to perfection in Jack Reacher.

I think that if these films worked more on the filming aspect of the fight scenes, and also make it look like it is happening faster, they would be considered maybe the best batman action scenes because here batmans fighting style is awesome its just the choreography needed some work imo

Some moves are actually impractical making Keysi unrealistic. And it's really slow. People say it's fast to the point where they can't see what's going on but that's due to the filming & sometimes the speed of the film is altered to make things look faster, but sometimes they alter it for other reasons. And it's not as brutal as it looks. That also plays part in it being impractical

Do you still train in Keysi? I trained for around 2 1/2 years at a school which incorporated both Keysi and BJJ as my instructor was an ex-KFM guy and a current BJJ instructor. We mostly trained for MMA / combat situations, but I did fall in love with the specifics of Keysi when applied practically, particularly with grapples, hammers, and the focus on multiple opponents. I'll tell you this much, in the street, it has saved me on more than one occassion.

+Neldolas Yea, TDK and TDKR really show you what's going on most of the time. Batman Begins, he wanted to show less of the fight scene, so a lot of the times, the camera is too close or shakey, or the editing is very quick like Bourne.

Neldolas Even though TDK is one of my favorite movies, I have to agree. The fighting in Nolan's trilogy wasn't that good. In this video, one of the enemies had to leave his arm extended for Batman to disarm him. Not to mention the kick that wasn't captured by the camera, really sloppy.

Thanks for your video of the fight breakdown. I can now appreciate Batman's fight tactics more i.e. using an enemy as a shield to take the others down. I feel that the shots/editing of the movie were not not too well-done with some attacks occurring off-screen and some angles are clunky
@JoeyBslash3
@JoeyBslash3 3 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed, the fight scenes were a little hard to follow sometimes, which is why I do these choreography break downs. I feel Batman Begins had the best choreography, but the way the fight scenes were filmed with quick cuts and close ups (similar to the Bourne films), it really took away from the good choreography they developed for introducing his new fighting style.

That was a really fascinating breakdown because even though I've trained in various arts over the years and watched countless martial arts movies, the choreography of the Batman movies has always confused me. They aren't shot like the usual fight scenes and seem sloppy and random. To what extent did your knowledge of Keysi help you deconstruct this scene?
@JoeyBslash3
@JoeyBslash3 6 жыл бұрын
Not much...I could have deconstructed it without knowing too much, but learning some of the techniques helped a bit with understanding why he did certain movements. I agree, the fight scenes aren't shot very well in parts of Nolan's films. Not sure why he decided to shoot them like that, but either way, they still worked out well in the end.

Batflecks Batman is the Best Batman in my opinion, but Bales Batman given the way that he fought was very unique by adapting the Keysi Fighting Style, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, along with the quick Ninja like moves to get the job done which i liked very much.
@JoeyBslash3
@JoeyBslash3 4 жыл бұрын
I did enjoy Affleck's portrayal of Batman and Bruce Wayne. However, I give more credit to Bale for his performance because he did most of the fight scenes himself, if not all of them. Richard Cetrone was the man responsible for being in the Batsuit during the fights and bringing the BvS version of Batman to new heights with beating up those bad guys. Affleck was only used for some close up shots. But credit where credit is due, Affleck definitely put in the work to gain the muscular physique of an older Batman.

Are the moves based on real life martial arts and self defense techniques? Absolutely...but to know the difference and train for real life is a whole different situation. I have trained some of these techniques for real life, they are quite effective if you know how to use them properly.

JoeyBslash 3 a good example of my theory is within the fight between Batman and Joker’s Goons. When Batman uses thug #1 as a weapon, by using his head to disarm thug #2, that just wouldn’t work in a real fight, I’d more likely get shot? Some of the hammer blows and throwing techniques I can see being very effective, particularly the throwing and the way Batman gets enough leverage in his grip, using both hands locked around the goons throat? Best regards Dave
@JoeyBslash3
@JoeyBslash3 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidbentick Indeed, the headbutt to the gun disarm is not recommended lol. Again, it was made to look cool. Lots of the movements become much wider and open as well so the viewers can see and understand the action. In real life, many movements would be much tighter and shorter in comparison.

JoeyBslash 3 It just shows... that even though Nolan’s universe is more grounded and aimed for realism, he still had to trade off... in order to entertain the viewers, so it’s not as realistic as it seems, and if it was... It just wouldn’t be as exciting, which is understandable as you don’t see things on camera the same as you do in the real world. Just one more question, what’s the most realistic fight you’ve seen on film, if there is such a fight? Best regards Dave

I honestly didn't like that fight. It was cool and fun to watch while playing the game and going through the story, but the choreography is quite silly for the most part. I get what they were trying to go for with the counters to the throws, but it became too flashy for me. I really enjoyed the final fight in MGS 4, as you can see from the video we did. That one gets over the top dramatic, but again it works when playing through the story of the game. I might do the MGS 3 final fight someday just for fun

Sure the actions scenes of the trilogy is lacking but in terms of drama, great villains, interesting character arcs, realism & art design it still actually works. One of best action scenes from the film is the opening scene & chase scene from Dark Knight.

everything just moves so slow in that fight scene, was the armor slowing the batman down?
@JoeyBslash3

Armor always slows you down. Even if it is lighter than his previous suit, it would still slow you down. But I also think he was trying to make sure nobody got shot, including himself lol. He was going for power knockout hits too, instead of quick weaker hits

Hey. I was wondering about the fight towards the end of this movie with the SWAT. The bit where 3 of them rappel into the building and are met with Batman. In it there's a throw that Batman does after he first punches the guy. Does this particular throw have a name or something? If not, does that two handed grab that he does to control the shoulder before he throws him have a name? Thanks.

Thanks! Yea, the way this fight scene was filmed wasn't the best for Nolan. Not sure if he or someone else filmed it, like the second unit, but whatever the case, the editing and camera position sometimes seems off to me. Or maybe they just had to hide bad mistakes in the execution of the choreography.
