Another thing about Analogue that I never see mentioned is how badly they screwed over Endrift, the developer of the mGBA emulator. They were screwed over to the point of having to write an entire blog post about how Analogue led them on, promised them money, made them work long hours in the months & weeks leading up to the release building a BIOS for the Pocket, all for Analogue to pull the rug out from under the dev and leave with written code & wasted months, but no cash. It was 5 figures and 6-7 months of work IIRC. Now, it seems that blog post has disappeared and any mention of Endrift on their official social media channels gets your comment deleted & your account blocked. 🤔 With how shady they are, if you really want to play on a console that acts as close as possible to a real GB hardware (aka the target audience of the Pocket), I’d rather just buy a pre-modded GBA SP Slate for about the same price as an Analogue Pocket costs pre-shipping. 100% real hardware, great screen, great form factor, and you’re supporting creators who care about the modding community + gives back to it, and who don’t see the community as a bunch of pay pigs ready to empty their wallets.
@carrottoponcrakАй бұрын
That sucks. They don't teach everyone to get signed paperwork before you turn in any work these days
@inclinerdАй бұрын
@@carrottoponcrak that’s the thing though, Endrift never had the chance to. It was written up, tested, and ready to go, and AFAIK a contract was signed, but Analogue refused to use/accept the code, then used the refusal as an excuse to not pay out the money they owed. And even if a contract was signed, Analogue is far richer, has more lawyers, and has way more resources to fight/drag out the legal case, so it wouldn’t have helped her. And it certainly doesn’t help that all of the Pocket’s “revolutionary” features are just ripped from older homebrew hardware devs, like “remote controls from a diff console” when insideGadgets had been selling a cartridge that does just that for the past 2 years for $20-30 USD. I wouldn’t be surprised if they ripped code from a lot of other devs in the GB/A scene to plop into the Pocket

I placed an order in December with an estimated ship time of Feb 2024. I modified my GBC with a Q5 ips LCD in the mean time and I love it. I also ordered an RG35xx plus and that should be arriving soon too. I've also been reading various anecdotes and opinions of the pocket and it seems like a lot of people say it's not worth it given the alternatives and price albeit the alternatives are all emulation devices. The thing I don't like is that we're charged full price upfront despite having to wait months to over a year to receive it. Also the shipping is a cash grab and price gouge since they know people will still pay the $$$. I opted not to go for the dock as they seem to think they can charge an extra $10usd for shipping, even though it's a small item and is going to be included in the same shipment. The other colors have not been in stock at all either. This whole product seems like a massive paper launch with the intent of having people fall for FOMO. I could get a miyoo mini plus for the cost of the shipping alone lol Having second thoughts on whether I should continue waiting or cancel

That's what I just do not understand-- why are they continously out of stock on everything?! They have to have plenty of cash on hand to pay for stock, thus making even more money. It's like after a year or two they get bored with the "old" product and move on to the new one, without even letting the last one live up to it's full potential. To me, it's baffling. It's like they're a very successful company, they just don't have a clue as to how to scale up to meet demand, or even fulfill what they promise. That said, I was lucky enough to get one of the early ones. Took a year and a half to actually receive it. And I do love using it. Took it on vacation with me just this week and played a bit of Castlevania on it, and some Metroid. So yeah, they make great products, they're just a _very_ weird company.

I wanted the original black one when it first came out because I thought it looked very slick, but when I saw it wouldn't ship until about a year later I decided not to. If I buy something I want it within a week or so. They are or were gaining interest on the money people sent them without delivering the product people paid for. Another thing to consider is how do we know they themselves aren't scalping their own product to sell at higher prices on eBay? It's well known they are a scummy company so I wouldn't put it past them to do such a thing. In the end, there's a hundred different ways you can play your Pokémon games at a fraction of the cost.

ON the scalping part - it's quite obvious it isn't them. The prices people are selling at are $50-100 higher. False diagonals and being able to press up with right/left+down are completely unacceptable for such an expensive device with such a niche target audience. Then there's the fact that they are never in stock and they have no scalper prevention measures in their buying process. I don't see how anyone feels like it's worth it, tbh. Very scummy stuff. I was interested in the Analogue pocket, but seeing how much the true cost is, nope. I have both the original Game Boy and Game Boy Advance and don't really play them much. That screen comparison, the Pocket actually looks way oversaturated on the GBC titles. Are you sure you're not using Gambatte's color correction options on the other devices? Because they actually look more faithful in terms of color, I suspect that option is on. It's very easy to notice on Tyranitar, he's supposed to be a light kinda pastel, almost brownish green, but on the Pocket he's a very deep lemon green, he's not supposed to look that saturated.

How can you run a company that can't even supply the products they make to the public. It's also odd how quickly these get scalped considering how niche FPGA devices are, despite it being advertised as a device that can play your carts natively. Plus their other systems and adapters for other systems are also strangely out of stock too which means they are purposefully keeping a very low stock to make people see a sense of urgency when they do go in stock

DO NOT BUY ONE! I’m in the UK and just coming across this video, wish I’d seen it before I purchased one. I was seduced by all the videos of how good it was and then saw they were doing a launch date and selling for $500!!! I stupidly ordered one (as I have some disposable income, plus I’d been looking for something like this for a long time). The shipping fee was ridiculous and I was shocked to find this import tax when there was no prior warning of this. When I raised it with customer service they were very much ‘a matter of fact’ about it and their attitude really pi**ed me off. I got so mad I asked to return it, I didn’t care at this time about the shipping and import tax and just wanted to get rid of it. They then said it was a 15% restocking fee! So I would have to not only pay to return it but they’d also scalp the return fee. In the end I opted to keep it, it’s been a month and I haven’t even opened the box, and even though I can afford it I’m still seething with how I’ve been treated. Do not get one if you’re thinking about it.

I really wish they would switch to a 'pre-order' style batch process instead of this limited batch/quantity release bullshit. I would absolutely LOVE the N64 they bring out, but I'm assuming it will be the same thing as the previous systems and instantly sell out followed by scalping listings for ridiculous prices...

Pretty remarkable how analog released their limited edition "classic" versions not long after this video came out. Make that bread, I suppose. But even as a past customer, it doesn't look great.

How do you rate the screen quality of this vs the Odin 2? Obviously different devices but I'm mainly looking to play GBA games, and this screen is tempting..
@JoeysRetroHandhelds Жыл бұрын
Best screen I've ever used, but Odin 2's screen is nice compared to other devices. For GBA, if you don't mind a smaller experience, it's fantastic here - next step up would be the Retroid Flip and then Odin 2 in my mind.

Do the transparent models show less fingerprints/scratches than the standard model?
@JoeysRetroHandhelds11 ай бұрын
I didn't really have an issue with either, but it would be less of an issue on the transparents.

Random question, do you know if there's any way to turn off the white indicator light at the bottom?

I do not unfortunately.

I’ve been wanting to get the blue analogue pocket but yours seems purple not blue because I’ve looked at a lot of transparent purple ones online and that’s what yours looks like but it’s probably because of the blue back ground I don’t know I just want to say it looks more purple than blue, because the blue one that I was looking at was a nice deep blue

great video! i have the red transparent one! does your transparent unit also have slight light bleeding next to the volume up/down button when the screen brightness is up?
@JoeysRetroHandhelds Жыл бұрын
I can see some light about a half inch above the volume up button if that's what you mean?
@thomasvg361 Жыл бұрын
Sure thing, @JoeysRetroHandhelds. So you're talking about a slight light bleed at that specific spot, right? You mean on the actual display and not the side profile of the pocket?
@JoeysRetroHandhelds Жыл бұрын
Oh maybe I misunderstood, mine is just the outside shell showing the inside lights. I don't have any screen light bleed.

For all the grief that Analogue is giving for a device that plays GB, GBC, and GBA games, people are just better off either getting an actual GBA SP or getting a Miyoo Mini Plus or RG35XX
@Lucifronz11 ай бұрын
It's amazing that you can buy a retro pocket device like the RG35XX Plus from China and get it for less than $20 in shipping, but Analogue charges upwards of $60. lol Also, as neat as this device is, why would anyone want it for their cartridges? Sure, it's probably more secure than it looks, but it looks *very* precarious and I would not want my cartridge that exposed during use.

The screen is awesome, but their software just sucks! I've been using software emulation Handhelds for many years now and feel spoiled with how good the user experience is on them (after configuration). The AP feels clunky and bare by comparison. Plus for the systems that the AP can hardware emulate, most of the basic handhelds on the market have great software emulation mitigating the need for FPGAs. Plus they all have quick save states for all platforms. So really, it's just about the AP screen and for purists who must use a cartridge and that feel superior with hardware emulation. I should really just sell my AP while it is still worth some money.
