I accidentally found out that overloading a pencil condenser microphone on a high tuned snare gives it the punch that high tuned snares sometimes lack. I recommend to try.

@@eihthype6578 Rode NT5 :) It makes the waveform look funny and wavy, but with a simple 40hz low cut the wavyness is gone.

Got a drum session this weekend, so this is good timing. I've recorded a bunch of kits before but it's always good to see the process of a pro like Jens to see if there's anything new to learn.

Magic. I would like to hear the individual mics and any A/B adjustment that were made. Cheers.

The room with drum recording make the biggest difference. That and the player. You don't need 10 grand in mics to get a good drum sound. I use $700 mics in a bedroom and do just fine. The mid/side thing is pretty cool too. Takes some extra work but can do cool shit. Jens is a legend. The Amorphis albums are the best sounding stuff they have done.

Crucial advice! I thought I'm too stupid to record even just a kickdrum, but now it's clear to me i just need to buy a few Neumann mics and a bunch of others!

Don't put plumbers tape in your inserts. Especially not on PDP/DW style inserts.

Jens, when you have room mics at least 12 feet away from the kit, do you time align those room mics to the rest of the close mics or leave the delay?
@The_Absurdistt
@The_Absurdistt Ай бұрын
That is not a good idea as it defeats the purpose of the "delayed" room sound.
@mrcoatsworth429
@mrcoatsworth429 Ай бұрын
Part of what makes makes room mics sound so big is that delay. Definitely leave it.
@oldguysplaymetal5517

I agree with you guys and I almost always leave mine alone. However, there have been very rare times where I put so much of the room mic in the mix that It kinda' flammed. They were about 20 feet away. I looked at the waveform and the first upward deflection on transients was 180 deg out of phase. I actually slid them up until it sounded "better..."

D112 in the resonant hole or even slightly out on my Spaun 9ply maple sounds incredible!! But never attempted it on faster tempo stuff. Plumbers tape AND lug locks for movement is next level. Kudos!! 🦾🤘🦾

4 mics on a kick and snare. Bottom Tom mics Is wild. Kids will see this video thinking what he is doing is skillful and professional, it’s not. This is decision paralysis.

Bottom tom mics is not that wild..especially if you're sampling the kit you're using in favor of other kit samples. Kick mics in general are kind of a waste if you're recording metal.
@ldjc
@ldjc Ай бұрын
Given that 80%+ of the kick sound in most metal records is a sample, 4 mics seems like a waste of time.
@BlackWylde
@BlackWylde Ай бұрын
@@ldjc more like 99%😂. Half these drummers don’t even record with a kick anymore because it’s just gonna be replaced anyways.
