Thanks, Roxanne, for addressing the change of color 'spiral' and the need to mark the original beginning of round. I was just starting the sleeves of a striped sweater and the shaping was making me scratch my heard. The body had no shaping to the underarm, and not stripes after the underarm, so it wasn't an issue till the sleeves.

I'm doing a project with frequent-but-irregular 1/1 rows (think: two+ rows of cream, row of brown, row of cream, row of brown, two+ rows of cream, so helix knitting wouldn't help) and the Kb _really_ helps make them all line up nicely in a way that satisfies my perfectionism.

Thank you. Please, do a video teaching how to tell direction of knitting. You spoke about it a little bit on your grafting garter stitch video, & how it was important to know the direction of knitting. So, say you have a knitted item that is finished, maybe the sleeve cuffs are getting thin, but the rest of the item is ok. Wouldn't it be helpful, at least aesthetically, to know the knitting direction, especially if you were going to replace those cuffs, to know the knitting direction?

You have two choices: switch to working back and forth, leaving half of the sts on hold, so you can create the side slits/armholes, or work some bridge stitches (7-9 of them would do) so that you could cut steeks and fold back the bridge sts as a facing. I don't have any tutorials on how to do that.

Yes. I was going to show a section of switching between stockinette and reverse stockinette, but it just got too long. If you knit below the first knit stitch when you finish that first round, or purl below the first purl, you can get a similar result. I know the method where the stitch change moves to the left will work. I don't know if the YO method would work, though. Swatch and see!

Hi Roxanne. I have a question. I am comfortable using the jobless method, but I am starting my first pullover sweater and the pattern is in one color. I want to add a few stripes. The problem (for me) is that the round begins at the raglan between the right sleeve and front. THAT is where I have to increase. How can I do a jobless stripe NOT at the beginning of the round where the increase happens? Can I change colors elsewhere, where any issues won't be obvious? Thank you. Happy New Year!

Hi, I'm so happy to learn this new technique! You call it a YO, but it seems to me you are simply adding/or casting on(looping on) a new color: What about carrying the yarns up as you work? Is there any reason not to do this? Must you always cut the old color and add the new color. This is still a lot of weaving.

Whether you carry the yarns up depends on how many colors you're working with, and how wide the stripes are. I might carry yarns if I were alternating between two colors every two rows, but I wouldn't if I were alternating every 4 rows with this many colors. A YO is an increase, an extra stitch on the needle, with no twist, produced by wrapping or picking the yarn as for any stitch, but without inserting the working needle through a stitch on the left needle . A backwards loop, which is twisted, can be used as an increase, but it can also be used as a CO, because you can create sequential twisted loops on the needle that act as separate sts.

That final purl looks distorted and the new colour stripes across in front (purl bump?). Is there a jogless method that would be better?

You don't have to divide the round so that the first half is on one needle and the second half is on the other. If you divide it so that one needle has the last 1/4 of the round and first 1/4 of the round on one needle and the rest on the other, then that transition point will be in the middle of your needle.

Do you have any technique for fixing a jog afterwards? I’m working on a project and followed a jogless technique but still see the jog. It’s 12 rounds of one color with a 2 round stripe. I find the thinner stripes look more jogged than thicker stripes

I used leftover yarns that were all the same yarn weight (thickness). I believe they were all 100% wool, because that's what I typically use.

It's the same as when you need to transfer sts from one half of the round to the other with magic loop. Slip the st(s) from the left tip to the right tip, and then pull on that right needle tip until you've pulled the cable through the sts.

@@deecochrane2340 What I'm saying is that the maneuver to slip sts from the beginning of round of traveling loop to the end of round (getting sts past that long expanse of cable) is the same as if you are moving sts from one half of the round to the other when using magic loop. If you have all your sts loaded on your left hand needle, and in your right hand needle you have the right hand tip and a bunch of spare cable, slip the sts from the left hand tip to the right hand tip, and then pull on the right hand tip, like you were pulling a needle through fabric for sewing. Here's a video of magic loop that shows the maneuver you need for traveling loop. Thanks for this! One question on the yarn over method: what is the purpose of knitting the last stitch in the round, slipping it to the left needle, doing the yarn over, then slipping back. Is that not the same as simply knitting to right before the lady stitch, doing a yarn over, and knitting the last stitch? I feel like I'm missing something!

You avoid having to juggle actually knitting with the two different colors while completing the round. I would suggest trying each method in a swatch to see which one you prefer.

Hi Roxanne! So you slip the first stitch right after the marker, YO and then slip that stitch back, right?

If you're using a marker, you'd work the entire round in color A, including the final stitch of the round. That's why you have an equal number of rows under both needles. The marker will still be on the left hand needle. You return the final stitch that you just worked *back* to the left needle, and join color B so that you can do the YO. Then you slip that final stitch of color A back to the RHN. You would then slip the marker and work the first round in color B. Another way to look at it is to work the final round in color A except for the final stitch. WOrk a YO in color B and then work the final st of the round in color A. It's just a pain to join the new color for a YO, drop it, pick up the old color to work a stitch, drop it, then pick up the new color to continue on.

Question Is one of the two methiods preferable for a colour change of just one row or is it better (in an Icelandic jumper sleeve) to leave the jog - I have to alternate colours on just one row three times anddon't want it to be messy as it is just above the cuff. :-) Thanks as always

There really is no "better." There's what you prefer, and whether or not you think it's worth the hassle. For just a few color changes, it's often fairly easy to hide the jog as you weave in the yarn tail that is joined/dropped at that point by manipulating the tension in the first/last stitch to purposely distort the stitch shape. I'd encourage you to do some swatching, and try the different methods, and see which one you find suits you best.

These stripes were all different colors, so there would be no reason/need to carry them. If you're knitting with only two colors, and the stripes are only a couple of rounds long, then you could carry them

@@RoxanneRichardson I made once a child's top-down cardigan in stripes, 3 colours. Stripe pattern was 2rowsMC - 4rowsCC1 - 2-rowsMC - 4rowsCC2 - 2rowsMC - etc. Very pretty stripe pattern, but honestly, I was improvising. So for one sleeve I tried to twist the yarns at the back but the colour was visible at the front and it ruined the overall tension, for the other sleeve I let the unused yarns float behind until it was their turn, but even my large grown-up fingers could sometimes get caught in those floats and it created a small hole where there was a colour change at the beginning of the row. I promised I would NEVER do stripes again, especially not on a top-down grown-up size project, until I could figure them out right. Do you have a magic trick to avoid holes and having a gazillion of ends to weave in, please? (I have only just discovered today your precious teaching. Thank you very, very much for your excellent videos and the communication of your knowledge!)

As I mentioned, if you're working with, say, two colors, and the stripes are a couple of rounds long, then you can carry. Otherwise, you experience the problems you have had. One alternative would be, if you are working with non-superwash wool, to spit splice one color to the next, timing the color change so it hits the end of round. Otherwise, you have to weave in ends. I would plan on weaving in the ends from the previous knitting session at the start of the next session, so that you aren't faced with the entire task at the end of the project.

You deal with it by allowing it to happen. There is typically an inch or so of color overlap as the yarn changes from one color to another, and the color changes don't occur at the same place in the round every time, as they do when you are manually changing color, so that jog isn't really noticeable.
