Hi. Vet tech/current vet student here. What you're witnessing is a seizure, not dehydration. Seizures can be caused by a lot of things. MBD (metabolic bone disease) is the thing I'd consider first. His diet should be rich in calcium and he should have access to proper UVB light. Another possibility is toxins in or around the tank. Is there any tannin rich wood in there? Are you using any sort of chemicals in the room he's in? Like sprays or air fresheners or anything like that? Has anything changed when he had his first seizure? It could also be because of stress. You're trying to tame him, which is a good thing, but too much stress could cause an overload and possible neurological symptoms, such as a seizure. It could also be genetic and have nothing to do with your husbandry. I am not very knowledgable in beardie morphs but I know several morphs in other lizards as well as snakes that have a great risk of developing neurological problems (the enigma syndrome in leopard geckos and the spider ball python problem are two that comes to mind). The problem is I'm just sitting here behind a screen, I can only speculate from what I know from the years of work I've done and what I've been taught in school. If these problems continue, please see a vet. I know there are several good ones here in Sweden who specialise in reptiles.

@@JohanExoticGlobal That is so great news, and I don’t think this needs to be said but I hope you were able to get him to a vet because it was painful to watch. My gosh, I am so sorry that’s literally the scariest thing I’ve ever seen. Though I am so glad you moved him to paper towels as it looked like he was almost chocking on dirt and impaction is probably the last thing you want with him. I hate to be that person as you clearly have more experience with reptiles then I do, but I’ve actually caught my special snow flake of a bearded dragon eating both the paper towels and the newspaper I’ve used as substrate and unfortunately I think you should keep him on paper towels just in case this happens again. I’m sorry that happened and as a fellow bearded dragon owner I hope the little guy lives a long and happy life. Thank you for sharing this though. It’s an unfortunate reminder that things can go wrong for even the most experienced keepers.

@🍄Mushroom🍄 Totally normal in a growing beardie! As babies and juveniles, beardies (and any other reptile for that matter) will grow a lot quicker and thus need to shed a lot more frequently. As they mature however, they won't need to shed as often anymore. A baby beardie will shed every month or so while an adult only sheds a couple times a year.

This looks like a seizure to me. Assess diet, setup, reduce stressors and contact an exotics/reptile veterinarian. Show them this video and go to an appointment prepared with the answers to the above and show them this video. It is always best to seek advice and have any tests and investigations done when our beloved animals start showing abnormal behaviour. The cause of any worrisome changes should always be examined. It’s better to be safe and to do our absolute best by the animals in our care. Good luck to you and your sweet beardie, I hope all goes well! - I’ve kept and rescued reptiles and exotics including beardies for decades and I know how important they are to us. I honestly and sincerely do wish you both well, take care!

@@user-xd1cm9vu9s I didn't say it wasn't. If you dissect that comment you'll see that by including mad cow disease, I'm saying that they're all neurological disorders, seizures, mad cow disease, and this. I'm not a seizure expert, I don't know how long they can last but my dog's seizures always lasted several minutes, they were very intense and there was lots of shaking, like, at least a hundred spasms before it stopped. This reptile is only spasming a few times, unless they edited it. Maybe that's an average reptile seizure, I don't know. But if we're comparing it to mammals it more closely resembles mad cow disease than a dog's seizure, and when people have seizures they usually shake violently for several minutes also.

I would definitely get this little guy tested for atadenovirus if you haven’t already! Some bearded dragons with ADV can experience neurological symptoms such as body twitching and seizures. It may arch its neck and look up at the sky (stargazing) due to what the virus does to its nervous system. Bearded dragons that are infected with atadenovirus as adults typically develop liver and kidney disease, and other conditions. Oddly, some bearded dragons never show any symptoms and are lifelong carriers of the virus. A bearded dragon can quickly become infected with the virus if it is exposed to the feces of a carrier dragon, are handled by someone who handled an infected beardie, shares a cage with an infected dragon, or eats leftover food from an infected dragon. Unfortunately, there is no cure for atadenovirus. A dragon with ADV can only be treated to alleviate its symptoms. It should be housed alone to prevent further infection to other bearded dragons and reduce its competition with other beardies for food. It will continue to need appropriate UVB lighting and heat. Remove loose substrate and monitor feeding to prevent choking and inhalation during neurologic events. If it has a secondary infection due to a suppressed immune system, antibiotics may be prescribed. If the beardie is dehydrated, warm water soaks may be recommended, and syringe feeding may also be necessary if it is not eating well. Its quality of life must be assessed regularly to make sure euthanasia is not a better option over palliative care. I hope this was helpful and best of luck to you and the little dragon!

ADV has become a Boogeyman in the dragon world, pretty much all dragons carry ADV, just not all are actively shedding it when testing. Even wild species have been found with it. @@wrathgate.reptiles I hear you, but if this keeper has other reptiles in the home I think it'd still be worth a test to be safe. Before I took in my rescue beardie I had her ADV tested and bloodwork done. 'Quarantine, quarantine, quarantine' as they say in vet school! Best way to prevent so much disease spread. I agree it's not as important for the positive beardie... with symptom management they can live with pretty normal quality of life. But I would not want to subject an otherwise healthy dragon to ADV and risk a terrible reaction. It's a good thing to be aware of to manage husbandry and care in a multi reptile home. It's a shame breeders don't take more care to prevent spread in the population... I wonder if that's mainly the big chain reptile breeders or if it's infiltrated smaller breeding groups too.

yes, I would say this is completely normal for a juvenile lizard, especially a beard he they grow so fast and that’s why you see them shed so many times when they’re young because of their growth spurts once they start reaching adult size, the shedding will be less frequent, simply, because it’s not growing any bigger but they will shed old skin from time to time. Make sure you have proper lamp. UVB bulbs are used to have mine with it her daytime bulb and a moon bulb for a night. I really love the moon bulb at night. It’s really set the mood for a calm, peaceful rest.

My baby beardy did this and died within two hours no matter what I did. Unfortunately dozens of them at petco had some disease that affected a whole batch. I disinfected everything after we buried him and bought another later on with zero issues. I miss the initial beardy he was so stinking cute and will always have a special place in my heart. I did all that I could for him.

I do minimum for my beardie. They're a lot easier to keep than people think. Substrate I use is childrens play sand. Which is sand you get at a home improvement store like Bunnings. Lighting is a heat lamp with no light on one end and a 26W 10% UV light bulbs on the other end. Temp thermostat set to 32 degrees Celsius. I feed him meal worms or superior's dusted in calcium powder. I remove poop daily and have rocks and branches in terrarium. Also feed him coriander daily. If you use a weaker uv lamp you can run into problems with shedding or mbd.

I stopped feeding my lizards everyday and overall neglect in their enclosure. My excuses don’t matter and seeing your lizard like this woke me the fuck up. I have three beautiful lizards that I love more than anything and I cannot imagine them ever ending up like this. I’ve never harmed them myself, I never want to either. I appreciate this series because I needed to see what can happen to dragons. Step one tomorrow is picking up more worms and getting them daily salads again

This is how my very much loved bearded dragon died from my childhood. He was my BABY and he loved all the cuddles. He did this exact same thing. One day was fine the next he died doing this. We took him to the vet and they said he had an infection that was to far into his body to save him and he died at the vet. It is apparently something the exotic vet sees quite often in beardies but it can be caused by many things.

In addition to the reptile experts, pesticidal exposure (such as neonicatinoids) can cause seizures and illnesses in reptiles and amphibians. If you work in your garden or handle pesticides, or if the substrate you are collecting has been treated, this can injure or kill your reptile.

I know you left this comment a while ago but I just wanted to say that I’ve found that the kind of plasticky textured liner mats are much better than carpets, because they’re as easy to clean as tile, but much cheaper, and they can sometimes get their nails stuck in carpet and hurt their toes

Please take him to a vet, even if now he is acting fine. It's better you know that whatever caused the seizures is over and gone, and just to make sure he's in good health. Animals can be very tricky about showing sickness. I lost a budgie to cancer last year and had no idea it was there until it was much too late.

Yes I have had numerous lizards, especially bearded dragons. They need their calcium. I use to get a dozen live crickets , pour some calcium powder in the bag, shake it up then put them in their cage. He doesn’t look well. I also put chopped vegetables in one bowl and sprinkle it with calcium. What bulbs are you using? I hope he gets better soon. Mine use to love fresh watermelon.❤❤❤❤❤❤

Looks like the seizures my rescue blue tongue skink was having. She was pretty much on her death bed from malnutrition and MBD, but I was able to extend her life for 9 months (sadly she passed 3 days ago). I won’t lie that hit me hard because, for the 9 months she was the reason I got out of bed in the morning. I would say this may be likely caused by MBD. There are many other things that can cause this but MBD tends to be common. I’d defs take the beardie to a vet for a general health check up.
