This concerto by Hummel is a masterpiece of elegance, harmony and musical elevation that takes us to emotional levels often unknown to us. Hummel was an amazing composer and his talent is sublime. The most romantic moments are unbelievably beautiful. The pianist is of a fabulous level, not only for the sensibility he imparts to the performance but also for the fantastic virtuosity he expresses. The orchestra and its direction are superb. Viva the fabulous and incredible beautiful music of Hummel. Thanks for the magnificent recording that gives us moments of incredible pleasure.

Thank you very much! This work is one of the very first concertos to be written in the ‘brillant’ style, a genre that Hummel himself and others (Ries, Czerny, Kalkbrenner, Moscheles, etc.) would make very popular in the period 1810-30. But there is some confusions surround the A major concerto. Hummel seems to have re-worked it more then once during his lifetime. This recording is based on manuscripts in the British Library but, in fact, there is also the concert in A called posthumously WoO24a S5 with identical movement 2, but the outer movements of this manuscript, discovered in Florence, are quite different from those of British Library. I will post this "new" concerto in the near future.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! This is one of the first concerts I posted on my channel because at that time I was listening to a lot of Hummel music. Some confusion surrounds this Concerto in A major, which Hummel seems to have reworked several times during his lifetime. As a result, there are other recordings slightly modified nowadays of this concerto, but identified as WoO24a S4, sometimes as S5.

Credit must also be given to Maestro Howard Shelly who tirelessly brings so many fine works to life again by his many recordings. What an extensive repertoire he has not only including Hummel but also Kalkbrenner,, Moscheles,, Cramer to name a few! I remember a concert master of a major orchestra reporting on how some artists travel the world on a mere handful of works they can perform. Obviously they wont bother with anything novel or outside of the musical stable diet.

Hi Sibarit. I just heard Hummel's "Return to London" AKA Le Retour à Londres, Op. 127 this morning on WQXR so I came to KZbin hunting for it. Looking at your channel I don't see that piece, although it is on the same CD as this piano concerto. I am adding the timings to the other movements as a public service to other listeners. 00:00: I. Allegro moderato (Piano makes its first appearance at 2:40) 13:48: II. Romanze: Adagio (Corrected from 13:40; thank you Sibarit for pointing this out to me.) 19:43: III. Rondo I find the gaps between the movements startlingly short, at least in this recording. For anyone interested, I have found the Op 127 piece at kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIq4m398qNOjmaM posted by Папа Ген Also performed by the London Mozart Players, with Howard Shelley as pianist & conductor. There is more great stuff on this album. Why not post those as well? Or if you have, please reply with the URLs of those pieces.

Nothing that was known more than 50 years ago is no longer relevant. Hummel, the man once mentioned in the same breath as Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin, was neglected long time. His scores are still sought after and researched. For example his concerto in A major, WoO 24a S.5, is considered his SECOND piano concerto and was only rediscovered in the 1960s among the papers of Maria Hummel (a descendent) in Florence. It also bears the inscription “not to be published”. I also posted a piano concerto considered to be Op. post.1 (Piano Concerto in F major).
@jotabefrema10162 жыл бұрын
@@sibarit101 Well, I've had recordings of Hummel's piano music at home for nearly thirty-five years, as well as his famous bassoon and trumpet concertos. The first recordings I had were the piano concerto in A minor op. 85 and the concerto in C op. 44, which at that time passed for number 2. They were recordings from Czechoslovakia, performed by the Slowakische Philharmonie and the Kammerensemble Bratislava, conducted by Ladislav Slovák and Vlastimil Horák respectively. The pianists were Ivan Palovic and Pavol Kovác. In the late 1980s I bought a CD with two Hummel piano sonatas performed by Ian Hobson: the sonata op. 20 and op. 38, and also another disc with the concerto in A minor op. 85 and the concerto in B minor op. 89 performed by the Budapest Symphony Chamber Orchestra conducted by Tamás Pál with Chang Hae-won on piano. It is curious that this recording calls "number 2" the concerto op. 85, despite being a much later recording than the first one I had bought, and names the concert op. 89 as "concert number 3". A little over 15 years ago I also bought a CD with two other interesting Hummel concertos: the piano and violin op. 17 and the one for violin and orchestra without opus number, completed by Gregory Rose. What I notice most about Hummel in his piano concertos is the influence of "jodel" or "tyrolean-style singing", identified in those long and rapid successions of musical notes that quickly pass from the lowest to the highest registers.

Thanks for the post...Shelley and Chandos make for a great recording. It's interesting to me my own reactions to becoming recently acquainted with Hummel over the past few years thanks to YT I've listened to several of the concertos including this one. While I find them quite enjoyable, is it my personal prejudice that, while pleasant, quite charming, musical of course, that they don't quite measure up to the elite. I'm wondering how the more well read/trained musicologist of you feel about that.
@sibarit1016 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I do not know what the musicologists think today about Hummel's music, but I can tell you that I've discovered Hummel's music about 10 years ago, and since then I have listened to all his recorded music. I never felt bored. Moreover, I even happened to miss my breathing at two from his piano concertos. I do not say that all his music is up to the level of those who are called "The Great ones," but if you try to listen to ALL Beethoven's music, for example, I think you'll come to the conclusion that a part from his music does not rise to his reputation (that does not mean I like less his concertos, symphonies, and some from his piano sonatas) I repeat, it is my opinion as a listener, so we must expect the opinion of a musicologist.

I see a mention of Oberon on the cover, does it refer to Midsmmer Night's Dream? I don't know French but it looks like it looks to me like it would mean Oberon's enchantment or Delight. Could somebody tell me something about this, where it came from?
@sibarit1017 жыл бұрын
The cover of the CD announces the work "Enchantment Oberon, Op. 116" composed by Hummel. It is a fantasy (1829) in which Hummel refers to the music of the "Oberon" opera composed by Carl Maria von Weber.
@BytomGirl7 жыл бұрын
