Hans Knappertsbusch? Who conducts waltzes and signs reference recordings? Is this a joke? This conductor, trained in the Wagnerian tradition of Bayreuth, of which he was one of the last direct descendants, has accustomed us to recordings of works that we might describe as "metaphysical": Parsifal, Tetralogy, Bruckner Symphonies... Knappertsbusch embodied a certain idea of nobility and majesty that flourished above all in an opera pit. Rejecting personal success, he took fidelity to text and tradition to the extreme. He rehearsed very little, but his magnetism and experience gave him an astonishing hold over the musicians, transforming every performance into a real event. On the face of it, this approach to conducting was difficult to adapt to the imperatives of the disc, and perhaps even less so to so-called "light" music. Nevertheless, it's hardly surprising that Knappertsbusch took an interest in this repertoire, and fortunately for posterity.
Hans Knappertsbusch became assistant to Vienna Opera director Erwin Kerber (1937-1945). This enabled him to immerse himself in the purest Viennese tradition. He went on to enjoy a successful career as a guest conductor, most notably with the Vienna Philharmonic. In the manner of Clemens Krauss, Knappertsbusch conducts the waltz while remaining faithful to its heritage, and it's possible to sense in this recording a conductor and orchestra imbued with this elegant three-beat culture. While evolving within a rigorous framework, his beat is irresistibly supple and perfectly suited to his instinctive conducting style.
The composition of good light music is a very special art, which can be as elusive for great composers as for those of lesser talent, "Unfortunately not from me", wrote Brahms under a quotation from The Blue Danube. The greatest composers have all, or almost all, found the time to write at least one light piece; the light works of these musical greats totally devoted to their art are usually genuine samples of their deeper music. If the great masters have their moments of lightness, there are also composers who are masters in the art of writing light music. No composer, however prestigious, has ever equalled Johann Strauss Jr (1825-1899) in this respect. Many of his waltzes succeed in being both dances and excellent concert pieces, with elaborate introductions and skilfully balanced juxtaposition of themes.

■60 years ago, I happened to buy this record played by Hans Knappertsbusch at a record store, and I still treasure it to this day. I was a young boy at the time, so I listened to it obsessively (like a Beetles fan). ■Therefore, I have never felt any discomfort with his conducting, as people have commented. ■Records at the time had a ``youthful'' feel and had a ``humid feel'' to the high notes. Furthermore, the ``soothing zither'' sound played by Anton Karas gave me power. ■Perhaps because I was able to listen to his performances when I was a boy, I am still a fan of nostalgic classical music. I remember reading that Wagner himself was greeted by an orchestra playing Strauss waltzes on, I think, his sixtieth birthday (by which time he would have been setting the murder of Siegfried to music). He became so excited that he took over the baton and conducted the band himself! So the man certainly appreciated good light music as well. :) Funny note: in Henry Picker's "Hitler's Table-talk" there is a quotation about how the Führer did not appreciate Knappertsbusch, and perhaps not always Wagner's extended operas either: "To listen to Kna conducting Wagner was like being sentenced to punitive army service". 😃 As a lifelong admirer of Knappertsbusch's iconic 1962 recording of Parsifal, with broad tempi that never lose the edge and tension of the music, I can just about guess what Hitler was after... ;)

Ive always been intrigued with how some conductors repertoire, while including some very "heavy" pieces, also include Strauss. Knappertsbusch, known for his great performances at Bayreuth, here shows a different side of Strauss. Carlos Kleiber was similar. He had a limited repertoire, but Strauss was amongst it.

Tout est une question de goût. J'ai écouté Kleiber, mais préfère W. Boskowsky qui a dirigé le concert de la nouvelle année de l'orchestre philarmonique de Vienne pendant bon nombre d'années. @@ingemayodon5128 Effectivement à chacun ses goûts mais malgré votre préférence personnelle pour Boskowsky qui au demeurant est parfait dans Strauss avec Vienne, les mélomanes avertis et critiques du monde entier sont unanime pour reconnaître la suprématie absolue de Kleiber pour la famille Strauss, à la grande différence avec Willy qui est légèrement scolaire dans sa direction et conception c'est que Carlos y apporte à chaque instant une sorte de grain de folie ce que Strauss désirait ardemment, en cela personne n'a ce génie là dans sa direction. Oui au courant pour Thielemann pour le nouvel an, bonne année à vous aussi, et excellent concert.
