Johann Vexo play Louis Vierne: Symphonie II at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

Johann Vexo est organiste de choeur de Notre-Dame, mais c'est sur le grand-orgue de la cathédrale qu'il joue pour cette vidéo enregistrée comme "bonus" lors de l'enregistrement de son CD sur le même instrument.
La deuxième symphonie en mi mineur de Louis Vierne, dédicacée à Charles Mutin, a été composée en 1903. Claude Debussy écrivit au sujet de cette oeuvre : "La symphonie de M. Vierne est des plus remarquables ; la musicalité la plus généreuse s'unit à d'ingénieuses trouvailles dans la sonorité spéciale de l'orgue. Le vieux J.S. Bach, notre père à tous, eût été content de M. Vierne".

Johann Vexo is the Organist of the Choir Organ and in this video plays the Great Pipe Organ in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. This was recorded as an "extra" while recording a CD of him on the pipe organ in the cathedral. The work is Louis Vierne's Symphonie II in e minor, Opus 20; composed in 1903 and dedicated to Charles Mutin. Claude Debussy wrote in a review of the work, "Vierne's Symphony is truly remarkable; it combines abundant musicianship with the cleverest use of the instrument's special sonority. Old J.S. Bach the father of us all, would have been pleased with Monsieur Vierne".

Truly one of the finest performances of this work that has ever entered my ears. Very poetic!I would love to hear his renditions of the other mouvements as well.This is Vierne's magnum opus and it was hailed by Debussy as "remarkable!"I love all of his works, but after 55 years of this music, it all comes back to Op. 20. as being number one.

That was beautiful, the performance of Vexo of the Symphonyll by Vierne at Notre Dame...I can only hope the organ will sound as good after renovation is done due to the fire...byw I love many of the French composers for organ....once more great performance and should only be played in great cathedrals exhibiting quintessential reverberation👍👍

Wow!! The phrasing in even the quietest and/or most mysterious parts is absolutely crystalline. Every change of mood from sentimental to mysterious to dark is deeply felt. I've seen this work royally botched and now I feel I've seen the gold standard.

When you look at Mr. Vexo play there isn't a hint of frantic movement. When performers try something a little over their heads there's a hint of "catching up" to the score. Here we see a study in economy of motion. And the end result is beautiful.

+robert shaw all of the Cavaillé-Coll and many older pipes remain. Many many pipe have been added. What you state is partly correct - but not entirely regarding the pipework.

On peut distinguer du Widor dans cette œuvre de Vierne. D'ailleurs Vierne l'avait remplacé un temps à la tribune de Saint-Sulpice. On ressent, aussi, le côté dramatique de la vie du compositeur tout au long de cette œuvre grandiose. Le talent de Vexo, la puissance du Cavaillé-Coll font de ce remarquable enregistrement un grand moment d'émotion et d'émerveillement. Merci - JB13007

Did this really have to be such an enormous fortissimo? What will be left for the finale? Seems odd. I know it's marked fff, but I'm not feeling this choice for total full organ, especially for a first movement.

Sehr schön ausgespielt, keine weggerissenen Staccati wie leider so oft. Trotz der eher lyrischen Spielweise fehlt kein Risoluto, alles ist klar verständlich. Das lässt die Gefühlstiefe dieser Musik leuchten.

The musician in question is very okay,. But the organ is not at all in the tutti parts. In this case, there is an inappropriate aggressive roar. What an immense insult to Louis Vierne's art and to the listeners, Shame!
