Johannes the veiled chameleon was found outside in western NC and was barely alive when he made it to us. These chameleons are not native to the US and cannot withstand our winter temperatures.

Wasn't even dead yet and little buddy looked like a mummy. That's crazy awesome that you were able to save bud. I know reptiles are resilient animals, but he only had a few days left if no one came. Was literally living jerky.

The amount of spunk he has while on the brink of death is incredible. Still moves around a lot more than he has to or must be comfortable, and communicates when he's unhappy being touched and everything. Bro has an attitude and it's adorable 🥰 he clearly gave the grim reaper a piece of his mind on his way back up

Thank goodness he got the help he needed. There are a lot of areas that do not have specialized vets that can care for "exotic" pets. Unfortunately I know this first hand. It should be a crime to sell these animals to novices and people who do not know how to properly care for these animals. You can't just throw them in an aquarium and put a heat bulb above them. I'm not a breeder, but I properly took care of my chameleons including proper UVB, humidity, day and night cycle as well as a properly sized enclosure. You may be surprised how much space these little guys need and if you have more than one, most require a separate enclosure. You have to feed their food a proper diet as well otherwise you are feeding your pet junk. It's a lot of work and can cost a lot to give these guys the PROPER life they deserve.

The one animal to ever win my heart was a veiled chameleon at a reptile zoo. Many people were going to the glass and he ignored them. I then stepped up and said hey sweetie how are you? He walked all the way over to me, reached out an arm, then walked to the top of his cage while still watching me. He raised his arm to the top and then did two upward head motions. I stood on my tiptoes to see, and he was showing me how to open his enclosure! He kept reaching for me and people were gathered around whispering how is she doing this?! He wanted me to take him out and was being naughty hehe but in those moments I swear we were communicating with our eyes. Thank you so much for taking such good care of him! I will be watching to see updates ❤❤❤

It's really unfortunate that so many people are allowed to casually buy more difficult species. It's also unfortunate that even easy species don't often come with good knowledge, or good information to correct that lack of knowledge at purchase. >-< thank you so much for taking the time and effort to help critters, especially when he looked so gone.

It's not like the knowledge of how to care for these guys is hard to get. I'm sure plenty of enthusiasts will give advice. If they bought the things to house the little guy they could just ask the guy selling it for advice.
@alexbrannon

Unfortunately some places list chameleons as beginner or intermediate pets. I can't speak for the physical guides at Pet Smart, but at least their online guide shows chameleons as advanced keeper pets, but I'm not sure they always said that. PetCo still lists them as intermediate when in reality, if you look at some chameleons the wrong way you're headed to the vet. Most people don't do the research or they don't look at a reptile/amphibian/invert/fish/rodent life the same way they would a cat or dog.
@Variella
@Variella Жыл бұрын
@@alexbrannon there's definitely a big misconception that reptiles and small animals are always guaranteed to be easier than cats and dogs. That's definitely not the case for a lot of them xD. But I do have to say it has gotten a bit better. Then again it started pretty bad with entire *books* giving the wrong care and feeding information on certain animals.

I was "gifted" a rescue from a bad home by my ex girlfriend. (This was back in 2015) and she was extremely aggressive toward humans and would turn deep black when i put my closed hand in proximity to try and get her used to people more.clearly wasn't handled much. I did research to care for her but ultimately not enough research. She laid a batch of eggs and completely dried herself out. I normally kept her terrarium quite moist but not drenched still not sure if it was the power of the light or the labor of laying eggs in combination with terrarium conditions. But regardless her name was Nagi she is buried in my parents backyard and I stoll feel shame I couldn't care for her correctly.

Use reptaboost instead of carnivore care, its formulated for insectivores, rather than carnivores. Sunken eyes is indicative of pain, not dehydration. Hydration can be tested with a skin tent test or by looking at his urates (white is indicative of hydration). He didnt "get excited" about the food. He has compromised tongue function, likely caused by vitamin A deficiency or prior MBD. Thank you so much for helping this neglected guy

yknow i used to have a veiled chameleon, too bad she died about a month ago. When we first got her … we knew basically nothing about chameleons. And when we got her, from *petsmart* they had kept her in a glass cage.She had a respiratory infection but luckily we took her to a vet and she made it. We didnt have her long though. 1 year only, but we gave her a good life and gave her everything a chameleon needed and all the righy treatment.This video made my chameleon side of my heart happy and healed it a little.

AMAZING WORK! seriously I've seen what happens when you fail to give proper care to reptiles before & this is the third vailed Chameleon I've seen in this bad condition sadly Swivel, & Kecleon didn't make it Swivel died from an undiagnosed cloacal infection either digestive or reproductive after he was severely burned from his heat lamp & over fed on raw beef by his owner. Kecleon suffered the same burns & also had her tail super glued in the curled position by her 5 year old owner who was trying to make her into the pokemon by the same name as a result she suffered several falls in her enclosure resulting in many fractures & breaks. In both cases the rescue my cousin & I worked at had to euthanize them due to systemic problems from extreme emaciation & dehydration. So its AWSOME to see their is hope for these poor mistreated scaly friends.

You guys are the best. I have a wonderful veiled cham whom is a sweet lady, and is currently laying eggs. Gravid, so no babies, but i made sure to get a nice big bin and mix 50 50 org. Soil and play sand. These guys really need big enclosures, and every pet store i go to sell the stupidest all glass tiny terrariums. They need atleast 3 to 4 feet of height alone...proper lighting..t5 HO 5%UVB, reptivite powder on all live fed insects, as well as a mix of insects whom are also gutloaded. It's definitely not easy work, but so rewarding.
