I raised two myself about twenty years ago. There is virtually no way not to get attached. They are so intelligent. It literally broke my heart to release them. I went back a couple of weeks later to check to see if they were ok. When they saw me, they ran up to me and crawled into my lap clinging to me and calling to me. It DESTROYED me. I sobbed all the way home. Watching this video brought it all back to me. I loved the job, but it takes a toll on you emotionally to do what is best for the animals.

sure, physically, they may have been fine but their emotional health matters too. It would be wrong to say it doesn't. Some wild animals are fine to go. Some can't wait to go. Before we domesticated dogs and cats, they lived their hard scrabble lives..."wild and free"...surviving. Now, it's considered cruel to abandon them. (I agree) People have pigs as pets. Unheard of-ish 30-ish years ago. Release them, sure, eventually they'll Have to do what they Have to do to survive. Live creatures enjoy comfort. Homeless people aren't "wild and free" and beavers are doing their best with their little hands to actually build homes. This in no way means that I think regular people should start grabbing wildlife. Absolutely not. I can't stand people that try to keep them as pets but a real rehabber that questions whether or not they should release an animal, because they feel the animal would be better off should be able give themselves and the animals some leeway.

I couldn't agree more. In fact, after raising hundreds of animals over fifty years, I have reached the conclusion that "imprinting" is NOT a thing, anymore than they imprint on all of their own species in the wild. They may have imprinted on ME, but they certainly didn't imprint on ALL humans by any stretch of the imagination. So I never bothered to distance myself from them as babies. They needed all the nurturing and comfort I could give them. As far as releasing them, if you want to know if they want to go free. Allow them to come and go as they please. That's what I did with most of mine. Not one ever stayed. Some stayed for a year or two. Some established populations in the area, but none maintained a relationship with me. Wild aimals never CHOOSE to be domesticated. I don't just drive out and throw out the animals willy nilly and say, "live free". I spend many, many hours choosing an ideal place for them to be as safe as possible and to thrive. I'm lucky that that place just happens to be my land many times, depending on the species, and I have many people who believe in what I am doing that offer their lands. Even so, the wilderness is not a safe place. I'm under no illusion that many of them live to a ripe old age. I do know, however, that they certainly lived longer, happier lives than they would have had I not intervened. I REAL rehabber does what is best for the animal, not what makes themselves feel better. FYI, many homeless people DO consider themselves "wild and free". I've worked with our local population for over three decades. We have programs in place to get them housing, food and jobs. More turn me down than accept the help. They will tell you straight up that they prefer to go and do what they choose even if it means not knowing where their next meal is coming from or whether they have a roof over their heads. I've learned not to make assumptions about people or animals and not to force my beliefs on them. Love them where they are and let them choose their own path.@@t181920c

Other rescue beavers wont do that. You can find videos of them building dams out of toys, pillows, shoes, phones .... this one seems to have amore solid instinct doing so even though she was rescued at a very low age. They commonly build dams where they hear running water though. Around the washing machine, on bathroom door, on walls with pipes in them. Beaver specialists even mislead wild beavers by setting up speakers with water noise, so they will dam the speaker instead of damming the brook and flooding nearby human cellars.

@PiecefulKaos
@PiecefulKaos Жыл бұрын
@@jp-sn6si Yes, I was thinking the same. I highly doubt the wild is a better place than the care of humans. The threat of predation, parasites, physical injuries, infectious diseases, starvation, etc. is much greater in the wild. She could very well end up being eaten alive by a predator, which is a horrible fate that many animals are left to suffer. I'm highly skeptical that she'd be better off in the wild as compared to human captivity.
@babaliboon9323

@@PiecefulKaos Same. And what a complete horrible shock it must be for the animal. Maybe the caretakers have practiced some emotional distance but how can we be sure that the beaver isn't completely attached like a pet dog would be? @PiecefulKaos

@lucyinthesky444 I don't know why we'd assume her life would be happier in the wild. Have you considered speaking to Devon Wildlife Trust and Natural England to see if she'd be a good fit over here? We're in the middle of reintroducing beavers to the UK, starting in Devon. As such, our beaver projects are really protected, meaning that her friendliness to humans would impede her far less here than it would in a normal "wild environment" elsewhere. Might give her the best possible chance (due to the protected environment and the fact that they had to source beavers from captivity for the project, so she won't be the only one who didn't grow up in the wild). Also, it'd allow her to be part of something truly historic 👍😎

I'm not sure a North American beaver would work with our European beavers. They're not the same.
@t-and-p

@@realhorrorshow8547 When I initially read about the DWT project years ago (at it's inception), they were looking to source the beavers for reintroduction from North America as, apparently, they were genetically more sturdy (something to do with resistance to disease and a wider gene pool, if memory serves). They were still Eurasian, but apparently North America has a stock of them, alongside their native species (no idea if this is purely in captivity or...?). For that reason, whilst I completely understand (& agree with) your point about a species mix, I'm unsure as to whether she would fit the criteria or not. I'm no expert, so I don't know which she is, but I'm aware that she could be either North American or Eurasian. Am writing this in a hurry, so hope it makes sense!

@@t-and-p It does and you do. Thanks for the info. So far as I know, European beaver projects are using European beavers.

@@realhorrorshow8547 Thank you - it makes a really nice change to have a positive discussion online 👍 Looking at the last DWT bulletin I read on the reintroduction projects, they are definitely using the Eurasian beaver, I'm just not clear on where they sourced them from. If I find the answer, though, I'll pop it on here. Wishing you a great weekend 😎

That's easy, just replace "love" with "admire" and you've got yourself a proper use of terminology. "love" is an often abused/misused word. It's too powerful to be used the way it is.

@@The-Cat oh good grief . Do you spend all your waking hours looking for comments to correct ? Does it make you feel better about yourself ? Or superior ? As far as I'm concerned people don't Love enough . So if I think this beautiful animal is worth loving , then that's entirely up to me . And you you can jog on , and try judging the person in the mirror for a change .

@@Actingskint Please forgive me, I was wrong in nmy comment. "Love" was used in the correct context and my statements were incorrect. Now in terms of your questions. Q: " Do you spend all your waking hours looking for comments to correct ?" A: Most of my waking hours is spent on working (full time job) Q: "Does it make you feel better about yourself ? Or superior ? " A: Assuming this question is a follow-up to the first question. I am lucky to have a job that happens to involve a big portion of what I love doing as a hobby. It makes me feel grateful, not superior. Software Engineering to me is all about creativity, not competition. I agree that people don't love enough. People online can't even have an interesting discussion without being perceived as judgemental/hateful. Just straight up assuming the worst out of everyone that comes up with some different perspective to a subject seems to be enough to bring up a wall of unintended animosity. (sigh) I hope you have a better day. Disclaimer: No animosity intended. ( i feel i need to add this disclaimer now in every comment I guess). FUN NOTICE: I used the word "love" too. ❤❤👍

What an amazing foster mom she has! She loves Nibi with everything she has but still wants this sweet, lil beaver to live a normal life in the wild. The people that rehabilitate wild animals & then later release them, are just the best humans. They want animals to live their natural, free life but are happy to help when they’re abandoned & alone. It takes a special person to do this & as for Nibi? She’s just freaking adorable! 💕
