John Adams - Road Movies for violin and piano
Augustin Hadelich, violin; Charles Owen, piano
Filmed live in concert in Grünwald, Germany, on December 11 2018
Road Movies is all about the joys of driving: the first movement (relaxed groove) is described by Adams as a relaxed drive on a familiar road- with the textures and patterns imitating the feeling of the wheels turning and the car humming along the road.
The second movement is slow and meditative - I think of driving on a hot summer day. The violinist has to tune the G string down to F in this movement, and the whole movement is played in "scordatura", which gives the lower register of the violin a languid sound color.
The last movement is very fast, more like driving on a highway!

The way I see it, it's not as popular as it used to be. But that's ultimately a good filter. It reaches and is appreciated only by those who appreciate it deeply.

But, on a less smart-ass comment, when I saw you play in Houston after you were finished, post-intermission, you actually snuck in the back of the audience, violin in tow, to watch the rest of the concert by the symphony. I've never seen an artist do that before. Are you seriously that into classical music? What a sincerely humble thing to do--and lucky. With our new conductor (I won't put down the old one who needed to go), new concertmaster Song (who is excellent), and amazing cello section, the HSO IMO rivals the CSO when Solti was there when I was a kid/teen--so they are an orchestra worth watching. But, it was quite unusual to see a soloist stick around and listen as opposed to take off after their part or vanish to rub elbows with the rich donors. Aside from your amazing talent, you have a lot of class! GLTY.

Some soloists do that if they have time. Some also play with the orchestra. Nicolai Znaider played once a Brahms symphony with the orchestra he was playing with as a soloist.
