It's like listening to heaven... John I carnt believe how nice it is to listen to you talk about bait and fishing... Thank you... I've watched all your videos and I've message you before when you first started uploading and I've stayed with you from the start... I am not lucky to have a job at the moment but hopefully something will change and I'll buy some bits from you ie base mix and flavours.. I've got a bait tables and bait gun to start up.. I've done a few but nothing I am happy with... The mix never bonds right.. I've only just started fishing 10 months ago... Anyway its great what your doing and the point your getting out there... Thanks John.. Nice to know the camera man is your loving son... Hi William... Your dad is very cool and you are a very lucky person to have him... Take care both of you and stay safe

Love these little videos! As a novice bait maker in America and access to limited supplies its really nice to see one of the greats who's made bait for years and years come out and actually kinda go through what's important in a bait and explain the how's and why's and make the bait with you. And I do share some of your ethics towards the fish we so love as far as things we feed them, things we shouldn't and how to properly go about it. I can't wait to see more. 👍👍

Wonderful viewing John. Thank very much for taking the time. Takes me right back to when I made all my own bait over the last 40 years. I started again with my youngest daughter last summer. Her scopex plum creation smelt and tasted horrendous, but it caught her a good number of bream... which she seemed more than happy with. The joy of concocting your own bait lives on. Thank you.

Hi John, great video as always. I was surprised you use MPG as your carrier as this usually leaves a bitter taste. Have you tried Medium chain Triglycerides? As I'm keen to produce my own flavours and thought MCT would be a better carrier as its fairly plain on the pallet.
@johnbakerbaits91083 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry for the late reply. Most top quality flavours are made on MPG and require such a low dose that none of the MPG taste comes through into the bait. Not only do most bait companies use poor quality flavours, which already has a high MPG content, but they also further dilute them with yet more MPG in order to make more profit. This is not supposition, its a FACT. You will note that my recommended dose levels are extremely low, this also means that I tend to avoid using extra sweeteners or enhancers as these are also not necessary when using such a low dose rate. Much of what I speak about on KZbin or indeed in this reply has not previously been articulated. I will leave everyone to draw their own conclusions as to the validity and reasoning of my comments. I can't speak for MCT as these are not products that I have ever seen in any flavour recipe. Hope that helps, tight lines - John
@TheTricky663 жыл бұрын
@@johnbakerbaits9108 Thank you for taking the time to reply. I work in a flavours department that produces flavours for chocolate an drinks amongst other. The chocolate flavours are mainly MPG based. Which I had been using when producing baits. But I was guilty of using higher doses, thinking more is better. An then after not catching I blamed the MPG. So I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Lesson learnt 😃👍 Just out if interest have you ever tried using cocoa butter in your products? I've recently produced some blilies with a sweet maple flavour an they smell amazing

Words of wisdom - I do have (a French copy) of the CARP FEVER book fron the 80ies and the era of the hair rig invention/introduction, in which I re-read your contribution and chapters on Bait/Boilies.. all the basics are there. Back then. And are still today. Keep it simple, keep it natural, don't overflavour you baits, avoid "chemical/unnatural" liquids, no need for fancy glugs dips goos etc use honey as a sweetener, Fresh eggs as an emulsifier use high quality base mix ingredients only, a mix with a well balanced nutritional value for optimum digestability ..all no rocket science :-) ..we just need to listen well to understand what is required for a good, individualised carp bait The difference to your approach as opposed to the big bait companies??? YOU SPEAK out the very TRUTH.And keep it SIMPLE. NO big secrets. ....NO big amounts / not a lot of kilos of boilies required for a few days of successful carp fishing - and cut out the dips glugs liquid foods - simoly let the flavours and natur ingredients of the base mix do the work to attract carp... John, A VERY BIG THANK YOU. For being there. And for being who you are. Because of YOU I have rediscovered my love for making my own and very individual paste(s) for baiting up and as a hook bait And most of all I am rediscovering my love for carp angling After my flyfishing years for salmon and steelhead, and jerk bailing for big pike, it seems I start quite enjoying to SIT behind the rods again ;-) Stay healthy John. May you have many years ahead of you catching beautiful carp on beautiful baits. Kind regards from Austria, Benji Fisherlauser

Great vid John - I made some hookbaits recently and I think I did something wrong, they look great smelt great but the inner was still like a paste which I can’t think is right. I didn’t wrap my paste in clingfilm for a little before hand rolling ? Mistake ? Did I cook them enough or was water not boiling enough I left to dry for at least 10 hrs before putting some in the fridge and some in the freezer. Your throughs would be great. Also the chops do you leave them to dry before putting in the freezer. Thank you and regards Keven

Hi Jon another fantastic video and highly informative. I just wondered if you had ever looked at Goo type hook bait additives and their effectiveness. I’m assuming they are very much in the high attract category of bait enhancements. According to marketing they are made with natural ingredients which I’m not sure about but I’ve found them to be irritants giving me headaches, making my eyes hurt and affecting my breathing when so much as opening a bottle. If they aren’t good for me... I question if they are great for carp. Having tried them without much success I’ve gone back to simple things like salmon oil as dips and had better results. I’d very much welcome your thoughts on this type of enhancement
@johnbakerbaits91083 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I think you've answered you own question, since we all know that natural additives are best. Its very easy to make these types of synthetic attractants but the real question is, would the manufacturers of these products put it on their cornflakes!? As you can see I'm happy to eat my own baits, with no side effects (even ala salar!).

Regarding taste isn't is possible that you are anthropomorphising? Carp eat all sorts of invertebrates and other foul tasting things ( their own and other animals feces for example!) I'm not sure how relevant what a bait tastes like is to us, other than for confidence reasons of course.
@johnbakerbaits91083 жыл бұрын
I agree, if it increases your confidence then great! The taste to humans is simply a good benchmark for the acceptability of the bait we use. Which has stood me and thousands of other anglers in good stead for 50 years. Thanks, John

Interestingly about halibut pellet my local fishery around 15-17 years ago had a massive issue with the oxygen levels due to a person putting 15kg of hard shelf life boilies into the lake bed with pellet causing the levels of oxygen to become low and me and my friend pulling out 3 27lb mirror card dead and trio 32lb mirror that was buried. we put most of the fish in the match lake hence why now the fish are 30lb + we did save man carp but many died due to this person.
