Hi JB thanks for the kind mention, I’m loving seeing you in full flow what a great informative series this is. It’s hard to imagine the fact that a great many of the newer generations of carp anglers might never have rolled their own baits ever. I think you might well inspire a good many to have a bash, I think it’s one of the truly satisfying things in carp angling the thrill of success on your own bait concoctions. As we well know mate

John used you boilies and flavourings over the years and loving your clear no nonsense delivery. So many tips in here and newcomers to bait making cannot go wrong if they follow your advice. For years I refused to buy boilies, mainly because my homemades pretty much always outfished them. I suspect some of the preservatives put in commercial bait back then weren’t great, but it couldn’t have been just that. Loved the way you didn’t measure the base mix but added it to the “wet” ingredients and flavourings until it felt right. There are a lot of videos showing how to make boilies, usually from people who are relatively new to it and well, make mistakes. For anyone serious about trying to do it, maybe even for the first time, I can fully endorse Johns methods and advice. You will probably be using a hand pressure bait gun mind, but lovely round baits you can accurately stick or pult out are still possible! Thanks for sharing John and removing the mystery for some. Above all though it was catching on something you knocked up yourself which was so rewarding.

I’m a bodybuilder John and people always mention high protein, now for us and our complex digestive system protein just maintains muscle, carbs and fat put the mass on. So a simple system like a Carps surely High protein isn’t properly synthesised? I mean high protein for us is harsh on the system plus the kidneys. Always thought baits would benefit from complex carbs and essential fatty acids? I may be completely wrong comparing them to our system 😂

Hi John, I have recently stumbled across your videos of which I have found very honest and enlightening. Could you talk about how carp detect bait and how the flavours work with this. In particular PH of baits and if this is a factor with triggering fish feeding behaviours. Can you also explain how or why too strong of a flavour or bait signature can ruin your chances to catch carp i.e. can the leakage itself cause the carp to be tasting and following the leakage in some cases away from the source depending on conditions etc

16 ingredients in any bait for a dumb fish that eats it own shit isn't for catching fish its for selling product. Can of sweetcorn, chopped worm or tin of spam will outfish any boilie ever made.

I really enjoyed watching this. I made my first basemix and homemade boilie inspired by your chapter in Carp Fever, John. It was a cat biscuit mix if I remember correctly. I've been making my own bait now for over 35 years, I love it! My set up is very similar except that I have created a wooden frame that holds the rolling table base set at 45 degrees (permanently) and I drop the sausage in from the top, trap and roll. then lift to let the baits fall into the tray below. Also, I fill the top half of the table with caulk (to make it heavy) to take some of the strain out of the rolling. For boiling I have a mini Burco and an old Gardner Bait Cage which I've had for 30 years - you can't get them any more, which is a shame because mine is rusting away to nothing. My sausage gun is a smaller Cox gun - I can only get 4 large eggs worth in it - can I ask where you got the larger gun from? Also, the wire boiling cage? best wishes, Scott

Great content, been making bait since the mid eighties. Did the same as John has with the Gardner tables by mounting them on a base, I use plastic cat litter trays under my tables ☺️ Very quick and easy to make bait this way. Don't think there's really anything on the market to touch John's stuff for quality to be honest.. Confidence every time you cast out I'd say.

When I got fed-up with rolling bait, I started making flat square slabs and boiling them. Then after drying just chop up to required sizes. Resulting bait is faster-breakdown cubes that you can vary the sizes of. Worked quite well.

@@DAbramUK typically yeast of the Saccharomyces genus are used in fish foods as well as human foods. Labelled as baking, brewers or nutritional yeast. While not necessarily known for any sort of probiotic function, they certainly have a unique flavour profile which I’m sure can attain for its success. I don’t think the yeast in bread can be blamed for any negative impact of fish health if used in a typical angling environment. I don’t think the yeasts are bad for the fish, provided the fish have the appropriate balanced diet of protein, fats and carbs. Which, of course, a quality fish food/bait would have. Hope this helps.
