Best winger I’ve ever seen. Digger was unbelievable and it makes me sad when I hear these kids today talk about who the greatest is and not mention his name. John Barnes has been forgotten over time by a lot of people. Never me. The best.

He wasn't a winger. He was an inside forward. That's how he played for Liverpool. With England, he was stuck on the wing and was never successful.

first 3 seasons at liverpool , he played on the left wing. Houghton on the right, whelan and macca centre mid. we played 4-4-2 with aldridge and beardsley up front. he was a winger@@DannyBoy777777

Even with Klopps current successes I don’t think I’ve enjoyed football as much as Dalglish’s 80’s teams. Best football team I’ve seen in my lifetime.

Add to this the lumpy, bumpy pitches the 80s Liverpool had to contend with, and still produce their brilliance. Different class.

In my opinion one of the best players in the world from 87 to 91 even when he moved into the centre of the park such a gifted player it’s a shame Roy Evans didn’t have a stronger hold on his team to see them over the line the wasted generation

Already one of the best when left out of the England team v Argentina in 1986. In 18 minutes as a sub he almost turned the game. 'Hand of God' gets the blame but Robson was just as culpable.

@@samcolbeck Yes it was a real shame .Glenn Hoddle they should’ve built the team around him and Barnes and Chris Waddle Beardsley they had so much quality it’s such a shame at that time England played so negative and rigid football Terry fenwick tells you everything you need about those years

If Liverpool were eligible for Europe during that ‘87-91 period, I’m convinced Barnes would have won a ballon dor, or come very close to one. Best at his position during that time.

I loved Barnes, and felt he was very unfairly criticized by England fans because he rarely displayed his Liverpool form for the national team. He played no.10 for Liverpool, the best team in the country, and for England on the left of a stagnant four man midfield, with defensive duties. He never played badly for England, but rarely excelled either, just moments. But what a player, both at his peak, and later when he adapted his game to play more in the middle of the park.

Although he wore the number 10 shirt at Liverpool, he mostly played on the left of midfield (with some defensive duties), the same as for England. The difference was that Liverpool were a possession-based team so he got a lot more of the ball, giving him the confidence to produce more.

Such a shame English teams got banned from European football when they did. Today of typing this, Liverpool would probably be on about 8-10 European Cup wins. The Liverpool team in the mid to late 80's was devastatingly good. I would have loved to have seen us go up against the great AC Milan side that came to fruition at the end of the 80's early 90's. John Barnes & Co would have tormented Europe's power houses.
@SKa-tt9nm
@SKa-tt9nm Жыл бұрын
Very true. In the decade prior to the suspension, English teams had eviscerated Europe - 7 European cups in 9 years. Liverpool with 4, Villa 1 and 2 for forest. You can make an argument that serie A’s rise to dominance never happens if English teams aren’t suspended for those 5-6 years. The effect lingered throughout the 90s, when the prem was the 4th best league in Europe. But to your point - those late 80s teams, not only Liverpool but Arsenal and Everton - would have gone very far in Europe. Tough to beat those AC Milan teams between ‘87-94, but I doubt red star, staua, Porto, PSV or marseille had much of a chance.

@S Ka the LFC team of Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge, Houghton, Macmahon would have been to much for AC Milan in my opinion. We played some amazing pass and move football, and at pace. It would have been good enough for today's Premier league. I'd love to see our 87-88 team against Peps Man City of today. What a match!

What a player John was. With Beardsley on the right wing and Barnes on the left - our best ever wing pairing imo.
@DaveWallerLFC
@DaveWallerLFC 12 күн бұрын
Beardsley was a centre forward, not a right winger. Johnston or Houghton were usually on the right when Barnes was on the left, then later McManaman.

@DaveWallerLFC During his time with us PB played midfield, and when playing as forward played on the OR or wing. I've never seen him described as a CF 🤷
@DaveWallerLFC
@DaveWallerLFC 12 күн бұрын
I'm not sure what "the OR or wing" means, but maybe it was just a typo. As an example, in the 5-0 against Forest in 1988, the midfielders and attackers were Barnes, McMahon, Spackman, Houghton, Beardsley and Aldridge. Who was playing where in your view? I think it was Barnes on the left, Houghton on the right, and McMahon & Spackman in central midfield, with Beardsley & Aldridge up front. Beardsley played in midfield sometimes (eg in 88/89 when Aldridge and Rush were up front), and a few times on the left in 89/90 when he was switched with Barnes. But I would say that his normal position was as a striker (more a "10" than a "9" in the current terminology where positions are determined by number). For England, I think he played up front with Lineker.

@DaveWallerLFC OR, (outside right), is an olde reference to a what's nowadays called a Right Midfielder. While he's classed as a 'forward', (anyone who's not a defender), and was something of multi role player, his best performances for us were usually played as a 7, coming inside to either score or assist, rather than an out and out line hangar, at least when I watched him play. I only went to home games, money being too tight for awaydays, (except Neverton of course!). Unfortunately never seen the lad play for England 'live'. I see flashes of PB in Mo when he does the same thing - only better! I'm afraid I call as I saw him - a 7 with great skill and speed wherever he stood on the pitch. If you look at the team in this video, just see how many would today would be £80-£100 million players!
@DaveWallerLFC
@DaveWallerLFC 12 күн бұрын
Would you class Houghton as an outside right too, and if so did team have two of them? Number 7 at Liverpool (Keegan, Dalglish, Walsh etc) was the second (central) striker in my view, although at many clubs it was right wing. It can be hard to pin down a position when watching a game, as it can be fluid, but I think his main position (as for his predecessors in the shirt) was central. But it doesn't really matter.
