But because "The Mouse That Bored," ABC's parent company, likewise had McClain in its roster, she also exposed herself to possible charges of being a "ringer," and moreover, she aroused suspicions that an illegal fix might be in! That possible controversy could have killed any chance for a second cycle's worth of editions.

Agreed on that front, assuming that what @tiannasouthern5075 had to say was correct. Accusations of McClain being a "ringer," since she was already on "The Mouse That Bored's" roster, and of an illegal fix being in could very easily have been leveled; that might have prevented any new cycles of editions.
