That possible controversy could have killed any chance for a second cycle's worth of editions.

Agreed on that front, assuming that what @tiannasouthern5075 had to say was correct. Accusations of McClain being a "ringer," since she was already on "The Mouse That Bored's" roster, and of an illegal fix being in could very easily have been leveled; that might have prevented any new cycles of editions.
