No matter who samples it, same place same exact setup etc. it will never sound as great as when John Bonham played it.

The drum sound wasn't just the result of the ambience. It was also run through a Binson tape echo machine configured to match the tempo of the song in 16th notes. That's why you hear some hi hat hits louder than others. That was Andy John's idea. When Bonzo heard it, he was flabbergasted. Brilliant drumming and brilliant engineering.

As noted, those who engineered the music have as much to do with their success as the groups musical talents. Today's music relies on this to make much less talented folks make "music"... most of which doesn't catch my soul at all. Those of us who grew up with this music in the 70s know how lucky we were.

This is wrong, again. Everyone gets this wrong over and over forever. The stairwell mattered for the sound and natural reverb, absolutely yes, but there is a Binson Echorec on the drums.

When I was in a wedding band, we set up in a courthouse for the reception so the echo was going to be ridiculous whether we liked it or not. I did a sound check on the drums and they sounded pretty much just like when the levee breaks. Unfortunately, I could not convince the band to add that song to the set… Since it was a wedding band.

Here's what most non drummers don't understand, especially those speaking about his sound in this video. Bonham didn't have to hit the drums hard. They sounded like he was hitting hard because of the natural reverb of the room it was recorded in. His drums were large drums to begin with, so not much effort was needed to get that power from his drums and from that room. John also had dynamics, and knew exactly how to hit his drums in order to get a bombastic sound without having to hit like a gorilla. His drumsticks were also huge, most probably long extended 2B sticks, and of course, the big band drum set type tuning way he tuned his drums. By tuning the drums higher than their standard tuning range for the drum shells, was necessary in order to push as much air through the shell to resonate it to its fullest tonal spectrum. If you notice Bonham playing live, aside from his drum solos, his arms are in a comfortable and relaxed position, ergonomically comfortable and efficient for drumming without potential for soreness or long term injury to his upper body, arms, hands and wrists. He knew exactly what he was doing. And of course the room probably had 75% to do with the sound the achieved. Many misconceptions about him as a player. But most don't bother to notice or look carefully at how he actually played. Yes, live he was a monster, especially during his solos, but most of the time he's as cool as a cucumber..

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! A Binson Echorec unit was used in recording the drum track. Please see Rick Beato’s video to prove this fact. Too much false information on the internet folks. Do some fact checking before making videos please…
@denniswilson6313 күн бұрын
Calm down there, sparky. The video mentions the three-story hallway only for its reverberation and ambiance. It gives full credit to the Echorec at 7:44. Granted it would have been nice if there were a few more details, such as the slap-back timing.

You are all wrong. Page is saying it himself. It is the area the three stories…And the Binson…trying to prove others wrong. Would you argue with page. Bar the voiceover he says Echoplex but the sound is both! Natural Reverb over Three stories and Echorec.
