Great question! He might better have said “always aluminum, never never chrome over brass” as yes, John didn’t use wood snare drum shells, always metal, but at that point, the choice was generally aluminum, or chrome over brass for the Supraphonic. The Black Beauty used brass with a nickel plated chrome, and if you’re familiar, they produce a focused, polite and consistent bell-like tone that has a wide tuning range and records very well. But they lack the aluminum shell’s greater number of overtones and more diffuse, complex ring that while harder to control made for the great sound that instantly recognized as Bonham‘s snare (and that of many drumming greats in both 5” and 6.5” depths.)

At least now i know why i don't do my drums this way. i found out you can get as deep a sound out of a 20" bass drum as a 26" - get the 20" at least a depth of 17" if i could get my perfect size , it would be a 20x20. i have two 20x17" Yamaha bass drums that can sound as huge as i want depending on heads and tuning. you also have a much wider tuning range from a 20" bass drum.

I have a 20*20 maple base drum by ddrum. It's an intermediate kit but it's sounds great an easy to tune. Defs on the quieter side and never as satisfying as a well tuned 22 or 24 kick

@@SteveTheMightyBean When you are miking a drum , you don't need loudness. you need a controlled bottom end that is you bass tone of your kit. a 20" is the pefect bass tone for a great sounding drumset.

@@kcChicken123 Not with my Stage Custom or my Advantage Nouveau 20" bass drums. Yamaha drums sound a lot deeper than Ludwig drums and that is part of the reason why. i habe found the richest , deepest sounding drums to be Gretsch , Mapex , Yamaha and Tama. Ludwig sound very mid range sounding. i can see why felt strips needed to be used on John's 26" to control the overring. i don't need to do any of that on my 20" bass drums.
