I was a very young teenager in the early seventies and I was lucky, lucky, lucky to go to three zep concerts in my life. I witnessed this beast of a man do a drum solo in Moby Dick and for around fifteen minutes, it went in forever. I loved the song before ever seeing them but when I was actually there, he played the drum solo WITH HIS HANDS! Can we all imagine what that could or would do to one's hands??? I try to imagine the pain and I cannot. He did it for the "flash" and he did it for a reason. He wasn't really trying to mezmorize, it was just what he wanted to do and I was so lucky to have seen it live, more than once. He's called a beast for a lot of really good reasons, Moby being just one of these reasons. He lives on in my heart as my love of drumming grows. Nobody but nobody could ever play better than Bonzo. Buddy Rich may have the FASTEST hands in the realm of drumming but he's not a rock God. Buddy's fastest, bonzo's hardest, hands down. Resting into eternity my baby, from the little "girl" from Brooklyn who still misses you very much. Sigh.......😢😔😇

@@SumTingWong1482 my humble opinion, Neal is an amazing technical drummer but he lacks the ability to put emotion and feeling into his drums. Music is after all about evoking emotions and transporting you to where they're trying to take you in a song and John could turn a very simple beat into an emotional Rollercoaster. So, if we're going to judge on two categories (technicality and vibe) Neil would win slightly on technicality but John soars above Neil in the ability to bring emotion and vibe to a drum beat. That's why I would rank Neil as #2

John Bonham took our drum "gods" -- mainly Buddy Rich, Joe Morello, Max Roach, Bernard Purdie and Tony Williams and took those influences and made his own Rock style so interesting and so well loved that we still hold John Bonham in such high regard that every single Rock, some Country and even some Jazz/Fusion drummers since 1974 has been influenced by John Bonham in some way.

I’ve been going down a Bonham rabbit hole lately. When you watch his early solo’s like Royal Albert Hall in 1970, he was raw and energetic but unrefined. Still amazing but he hadn’t learned his full control yet. In this clip he is much more relaxed and is letting gravity do the work. His finger speed through the fulcrum of the stick is astonishing. A lot like Buddy did it. What a beautiful drummer he turned out to be. It’s a crime that he was taken from us so young.
@martinr1354 Жыл бұрын
Actually, he was a natural drummer that through practice and exposure to the greats of the past especially Krupa and Rich, combined with his natural talent in rock music created an insane mix of these drummers and his own talent.

+Roy Rogers If you don't have rhythm, you can't keep a beat. Same with people that can't tell the differance between an A and a G, you won't find them in any choirs anywhere. Sure, drummers didn't sit down their first time and played like John Bonham, but all drummers could keep a beat their first time.
@skankhunt-vw8xr8 жыл бұрын
+martingoldfire Not true. I couldn't do shit on drums for years. Something as simple as listening to music can help you develop rhythm, but I don't believe your brain is capable of it until it's learned.
@martingoldfire8 жыл бұрын
***** Good job for sticking with it. I sat down my first time when I was 10 and played a basic beat just fine, I just sticked to guitar too long so I couldn't match the skills when I got a kit(so I sold it). Anyway, rhythm is either or. If you got it you can develop it like any other skill, within the limits of your talent. If you're lacking, there's no way you can ever feel it. Just look at babies that can or cannot clap to a beat, it's in the genes (like in my kids)
@skankhunt-vw8xr8 жыл бұрын

All these crystal clarity experts below: Sit'em in front of a kit and they couldn't get past the first 10 seconds of Bonham's solo with even a small fraction of that feel, groove, musicality, and downright head bobbing soul. Good God Bonham was awesome, even here, near then end.

Yea plus bonhams sound is just so rich powerful and unmistakable. Bonham can hit anything with a drum stick and you can tell it’s bonham hitting it cause it just sounds so perfect. He used to play a toy kit and without even looking everyone could just tell it was him playing just by the sound.

I play the drums okish, but when I see Bonhan playing I feel like giving up

David don't give up just keep playing and remember that it's not all about being able to play long drum solos.

If anything it should inspire you. I always look back to Bonham for inspiration or a boost of motivation
@drummerboy06205 жыл бұрын
Use him as inspiration. If that’s the case, try to become better. There’s nothing wrong with there being someone better. You have to remember that Bonzo is the greatest ever. The fastest foot in rock. Try and strive for that level of playing and you won’t want to give up. Try and be better

Bonham is my favorite but his skill was just part of what made him good. It's the choices he made, it's what he decided to play that made him great. Don't be a drummer that plays music. Be a musician that plays the drums.

His playing is so good and unique that it trances me out in a way no other drums do. If u have a game system I recommend Ape Out it has jazz drumming thats set to an Ape rampaging out of a medical testing facility. It kinda sounds like this and is choreographed to your movements at all times

He plays '' The drum also Waltzes'' at 7:00 minutes. Unusual jazz tempo and feel for such a hard pounding drummer. He was more versatile then some people might think.

Hands down the best rock drummer ever. Quit arguing because even his peers say he was. Often imitated but NEVER duplicated!
@thesultanofswing87063 жыл бұрын
I think saying this is hard, because no two drummers have the same style. Personally, at the risk of sounding incredibly cliché, Neil Peart is hard to beat in terms of sheer talent and skill. Buddy Rich was the fastest drummer to ever walk the earth, and always will be. John Bonham can't be beat in terms of rhythm and consistency. Personally, and don't kill me for this, Dave Grohl is my favorite after Peart. That could just be my unconditional love for Nirvana speaking. All the best at their style of music, and it doesn't make much sense to compare them.

@@ferdinandwang1165 .Sure, Rich was an asshole and didn't like rock drummers for a long time, but he was a jazz guy. And although I don't like the majority of the musician he took along on the road( they were mostly kids) his drum solos are some of the greatest ever recorded. In fact, I think he's the only drummer who could of gotten away with being Bonham's replacement ( although it would of been a cold day in hell if it happened).
@ferdinandwang11654 жыл бұрын
@@blackstaff798 Greetings! Yes, that is true. He was a jazzer, but rock music is good as well! Buddy once said that 'If you don't have the capability, you go and join a rock band.' Yeah, Buddy, I'd love to have seen you compare bank balances with John Bonham back then! You may be faster but he has more pocket cash, so... Not much of a fan of Bernard 'Buddy' Rich, but I do agree with what he says re practice: 'You can only get better by playing...with a band.' I like only one CD - Roar of '74. I'm more into the jazz of Tony Williams, Max Roach, and Rodney Holmes. Steve Smith I like too, I bought one of his VI CDs. I may check out Cindy Blackman as well. I don't care what gender the drummer is, if she or he is good, then fine! Cheers! Also - Bernard joining the Led? Who knows. But Moon wanted to join the Beatles and Paul told him that they already had a drummer. They hired Ringo because he hated doing drum solos and so did the three of them, can you believe it? Oh, well, no one wins them all!

I know this is going to sound weird and maybe offensive to some, but I'm saying this from a a true place. My Nono's (Italian for Grandpa) name is John. He was a mason and is now retired, but was a master in his craft. He was an excellent brick layer/mason, like an artist when it came to building things. He is now retired and took up his old hobby as a teenager in the 50s/early 60s of working on old cars. Unlike a lot of people, he remodels them from scratch, something I always admired/admire about him. No, he wasn't a "genious" in school, more like Danny Zucco from Grease. But he's a good man and grandfather and I love him very much. He reminds me of John Bonham (not because of drumming, Nono is not a drummer) but because he puts his heart into his work and is passionate about it. I read somewhere that John Bonham was a bricklayer on the side prior to LZ and real family guy as well. That's why I think of my Nono when I see JB drum. God bless you John and God bless you Nono.
