I vividly remember when Claremont and Byrne's X-Men broke out. It was huge. It was firmly the monthly "it" book. Uncanny X-Men was THE monthly comic that you truly looked forward to reading every single month, because it was consistently excellent, almost dependably so. But really, there were few comics that could compete with what X-Men had going on with character development - at this point in comic book development. The best titles of this era utilized a sense of dramatic character evolution, often written with emotional narrative expression or thought bubbles, but Claremont used this format so effectively. He knew how to deliver an inside look into his characters, and toss in bits of foreshadowing and fears, all while looking fabulously cool and full of great action. It was a beautiful thing.

@@citycrusher9308 So true. Wolverine was cool because he wasn't a hero and certainly not a team leader and only about as tough as Daredevil. Then they made him the center stud of the Marvel universe and ruined everything about him that was cool to begin with.

The Tomb of Dracula vol. 1 to vol.4 is my favorite essential editions, Gene Colan art is amazing in B&W.

I've had to buy this essential 3 times but this last time, I've kept it for years. I hold this run in such high regard as a masterpiece of comic book storytelling.

Great classic run ! Byrne at one point during his X-men run was also drawing the Avengers 181 -191 and Fantastic Four 209-221 .

The quality and consistency of Byrne and Austin on those books was outstanding. That Wolverine solo scene going in to the Hellfire Club and their goons is still exciting! There were complaints about the plain white astral plane backgrounds? I still think those panels are visually cool.

I could be wrong, but I think that issue of Wolverine going solo is the template or image people have of Wolverine ever since. It was like what Dark Knight Returns did for Batman -It defined the character. Wolverine was good with a team, but he is at his best going solo. I am sure it is imspiration for the limit series and everything since including the movies. Good times.

This is for me, the peak of John Bynes. In his later art -Fantastic Four, Apha Flight, Superman, and Nextmen, his art is much more loose, especially when he started inking his own stuff. That is his style and he was doing so many comics. Terry Austin was a good partner to Bynes.

So funny that you guys are highlighting this. This was my bible as a kid, I was inseparable from this phonebook. The thin newsprint paper gave me an appreciation for paper stock and the black and white presentation taught me about inking. I also love the actual storytelling, it contained, to me, the best x-men stories. So happy to hear you guys also sing its praise.

I’d also shout out the DC Jonah Hex essential. The art by Tony DeZuniga is incredible. His last issue was weird western 23, and funny enough the issue ends with Jonah’s death, it’s a perfect end to his run. They bring him back the following issue with a weaker artist, but I stopped reading and decided that was the canonical end for the character. The Tony DeZuniga run takes up half the volume so its still worth the money. The writing is pretty good too, the stories have fun twists that keep you on your toes.

These stories are the whole reason I became a comic artist. I wish they were still doing the essentials format. I'd love one of these with all the Miller Daredevil... or John Romita Jr's run.

Terry Austin is a Master . A GREAT artist . John Byrne is not at the same level without him . I think , there is two masterpieces in comics book : All x-men stories by Byrne / Austin and the killing joke ( with John Higgins ).

I have all three versions of that Essentials volume shown in the thumbnail. The binding on the one with Scott holding Jean was pretty bad on my version and the spine detached well before I finished reading though it (it was the first printing I had of that volume at the time). I still have it here on my shelf. Even after getting the later printing and a beat up copy of the original printing, I could not bear to part with it.

I loved those Essentials and the Showcase Presents by DC. I always thought Marvel was influenced into doing these because of Cerebus. It never occurred to me that manga might’ve influenced them until you mentioned it.

You guys keep turning me on to these great volumes! I got the Dan Clowes Studio Edition based on your video. I just ordered the Jack Kirby Pencils & Inks and now I'm going to get this. Still waiting on my Octobriana issue to arrive by mail up here in Canada, but I'm sure any day now. I'm a cartoonist and animator by trade and have always loved comics, but you guys are really upgrading me to a whole new level of appreciation with these videos!

Question for the Kayfabe braintrust.... the story Ed points out at 6:37 two-parter featuring Arcade, was one of my favorite X-Men comics - I have a distinct memory of owning them in black and white in a paperback format they were packaged with a comic that also had the X-Men playing baseball. Does anyone else know what I’m talking about? I have no idea where the book went - but it’s one of those things I’d love to find again.

I was so looking forward to when the Essential volumes would reach Jim Lee's era. To my utter disappointment they decided to simply convert the color pages to some grayscale mess that actually looked worse than the original color pages. Apparently they couldnt get a hold of the original black and white ink work.

Black and white is the only way to really appreciate 70-80's Byrne. X-Men and FF particularly. I stopped buying the amazing Essentials when some idiot decided it would be good idea to just grey-scale xerox the coloured versions later. Miller's DD is another one you can't appreciate as much with the crappy colour quality of the day

Am I a big jerk for suggesting that the color process back then really destroyed the beauty of this work? when you see the stuff from this era inked in black in white its breathtaking, but the limitations of the coloring really brings it down. Am I a crazy person for this opinion?

No, you're not. Something happened to coloring on newsprint in the seventies in comparison to previous decades. Take an actual physical issue of Silver Age Avengers and compare it with its Marvel Triple Action counterpart. Make sure it's one of the ones that tried to reproduce the original colors and not one that was heavily recolored. Avengers #26 and MTA #20 are a good choice. The colors in Av#26 pop and are crisp in a way that what present as the same colors in MTA#20 do not. The reds, blues, and yellows tend to reproduce more vibrantly in the sixties originals. During Danny Fingeroth's reign as reprint editor in the late seventies, recoloring and art alterations became more common and more extreme. Check out the reprinting of Avengers #61 in Marvel Super Action #22 for an example of a drastic seventies style recoloring. The artwork for a couple of individual panels are even flipped from the original artwork, as is the cover. The coloring in the MSA#25 reprinting of Avengers #64 is mostly faithful to the original (except for Hank Pym's hair and coloring the Vision's intangible form the seventies way), but again, like in the case of Avengers #26/MTA#20, the "same" colors reproduce duller in the reprint than in the original. To my ancient 55 year old eyes, the color reproduction in a lot of Marvel Comics from the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties got incredibly dull and murky, obscuring the beauty of the artwork. I don't understand Ed, Jim, and Tom's nostalgia for that version of newsprint coloring on superhero comics. (On Horror and barbarian comics, I can see the aesthetic appeal of murky color reproduction. On Superhero comics, I prefer mid-to-late Silver Age coloring over mid-to-late Bronze Age ones.)

I just ordered a similar edition of Rip Hunter comics, although I don't have high hopes for most of them BUT 2 issues were drawn by Alex Toth and I would love to see this stuff in b&w: 3.bp.blogspot.com/-X03IYzCBLXE/Th3cankZreI/AAAAAAAAIKI/Ar1lBCkegLE/s1600/Rip-Hunter-6-13.jpg Hope they didn't fuck up the reproduction, the Toth art ist really the only reason I want this, not knowing anything else about it. Maybe there are some nice surprises in there, too. Great format (if the book didn't fell apart on the first reading...)! The Kirby/Royer-DC-stuff would be great for it.
