These pages are a treat. He's still doing them, posting a page each weekday. He also engages on his site about the creative process, choices, etc. with the fans on his message board. In the pencils I see more Neal Adams influence than I do in his inked work.

Print production looks so good I keep thinking you're going to smudge the pencils every time you point to a panel! Thanks for sharing!

A legendary creator! He has been my absolute favorite since I started collecting comics (many, many years ago). I absolutely must find a way to get print versions of this for my Byrne collection. Excellent analysis/ review of his work, keep up the great work!

The indepth info is definitely cool, but the value is the cool vibe that lets me forget about a day's trouble and just relax and even chuckle at times (a lot of times).

Jim & Ed - Byrne is still posting ELSEWHEN pages daily. He is currently halfway through issue #28. Pretty amazing!

Fellas, for what it’s worth I believe to accomplish all those grids Byrne’s using an adjustable drafting table arm machine. If you’re not familiar the device ‘snaps’ into place and makes gridding perspective a lot easier without the careful measuring/vanishing points required. Byrne’s a genius, don’t get wrong; but this may help account for some of his legendary combination of speed and quality.

Really great to just see the pencils untouched. Another great (official) issue in this format to check out would be Avengers #1 Rough Cut (1998), which features full reproductions of George Perez's pencils.

55:00 - "I don't understand the Colossus in pain panel." His leg is in a cast and he wasn't supposed to be changing to his metal form as he recovered from the injury because the atomic level changes to steel form would "re-break" the bone or something to that effect. An interesting idea, but for whatever reasons it wasn't working within the story so Byrne later dropped the idea without resolving it.

Been reading and enjoying these. Takes me back full circle to when I was a kid at the end of the 70's - early 80's. I loved the claremont/byrne run, was devastated by the conclusion of the phoenix saga, didn't like how things continued after and stopped reading not long after Byrne left, sort of where these stories pick up!

Man, he can draw! So cool he did all this just for fun. Once you pointed out how some panels are using the same grid despite being a different shot I'm noticing it all over the place! How is he making that work without being noticeable? I think it's even helping the eye travel across the page, but I feel like it would be almost impossible for another artist to do that without being a glaring tangent.

re: The Colossus "agony" scene -- Byrne was trying to work out some storyline where the transformation was becoming painful for some reason, and that he was carrying some kind of leg injury. Weirdly enough, Byrne basically just said (in the comic!) that he was abandoning that plotline as it wasn't going anywhere. He then drew the remaining issues ignoring all of that previous stuff. Another fascinating look at what this "fanfic" series actually is. It's definitely not a traditional comic book experience.
@SeanSinclair8212 жыл бұрын
He actually went back and changed the earlier issues so that the leg injury had never happened in the first place. He said on the forum that the plotline wasn't working and was detracting from other stories.

I don’t know where I saw/ read this but I believe Byrne uses 3d computer models of vehicles like the helicopter or quinjet and rooms to spin around, set camera angles, get reference. I think I read Kyle Baker doing similar around the time of his Hawkman strip in Wednesday Comics.

I started inking these last year starting with issue 1. I tried to do 1 page a day and lasted only 2 months. It was really hard work. I don’t know how Byrne was doing up to 3 books a month where he was writing and drawing at least one or two of those books in the ‘80s.

John has stated on his forum that Marvel is the one who has absolutely no interest in X-men Elsewhen. He gave it to them twice but they refused even though he was not looking for profit! The fine folks who run Marvel these days must be totally insane! Maybe it's bcuz of their stupid rule, not to buy any work that was produced before their involvement. This annoying rule needs to be changed! X-men Elsewhen is the best comic EVER! The current Wolverine Origin storyline is the best Wolverine story EVER...PERIOD!

Nope. Byrne said he is the one who has no interest in taking this to Marvel. You have it backwards.

Man those pages are BEAUTIFUL! I've read through a bit online, it's def on my "Read Next" list, LISTS I should say lol I'd love to see these inked by a pro from that era, or even Byrne himself and finished as Stories. I mean with all the material here I think Marvel dropped the ball by not doing a new run with these. Elsewhen is a great name too as a What If? Story that doesn't break continuity. Byrne, Claremont and Cockrums X-Men run was SO good! Was def sad when that team dissolved.

Since you love the porcess...you should dig into Byrne's "How to draw comics comic" published in the '80's...low production values but shows his use of the grid etc in quickly dashed off sketches/layouts. It has the vibe of Solson's publications from that period. I think there is a pdf out there some where because I have a xeroxed copy.

Excellent video, guys! I’ve been reading Byrne comics since 1974, Rog2000 /E-Man back up in Charlton comics! Byrne style evolves gd fast Thru mid/late 70’s! Example of how he drew faces Captain America in Ironfist 12, Avengers 164-166(1977) cut to Cap 247, spring of 79 and you can see the development/confidence! John has a lot of that! LOL! At that time I would love to see him draw every book at Marvel n I know that he could if it humanly possible, but, that’s fanboy cloud talk! Marvel needs to stop bullshit n around put this stuff out there! It would sell as a monthly,a trade etc? Ohh well I can settle for Elsewhen! Thanks again!

This may be me misremembering but I seem to recall reading that he's drawing 2-3 pages of this a day, So it's amazing that he's doing this and doing it FAST. It's a testament to Byrne's legendary status in the comics industry. Not to mention he's selling the originals at a relatively inexpensive price, giving collectors an opportunity to buy Byrne X-men pages with the characters he made famous for 1-3k.

About perspective grids, I have a feeling that, in time, a thinking artist will be able to visualize and understand how much information he needs (haven't quite reached that point myself) to get the picture he wants. David Finch has done some great videos on perspective, fairly simple in conception, where he lays down his grid to the point where he throws away the straightedge before getting down to actually doing the drawing , in this case, of a cityscape: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGO0Zoijhq90jMk

Byrne isn't above having characters get down and dirty so the panel with Colossus screaming in agony before getting easily picked up I read it as 'look at his left hand and arm position : Jaahf jaaf whatever grabbed and squeezed Petey by the twig n berries from behind to incapacitate him to throw him as a weapon.
