It takes big brass balls to try and top a song most people relate to Elvis. But... Holy sh**. It's like Cale is the only one of the two men who interpreted the f**king lyrics correctly. I can absolutely believe _he wants to die_ . Love him. [standing ovation]

Andy Summers rips the ever-lovin' s$%t out of his guitar during the solo, and it's so much better than that rather sterile sound for which he's known. Even though Cale isn't using his fiddle, the two guitarists do a fine job of impersonating his viola sound. This is rock 'n roll.

Yes, Elvis was aware. This song, even when Elvis sang it, is about a deeply depressed person contemplating suicide. The song is based upon an actual news story in the mid-50's about a suicide.

This the Welshman John Cale formerly of the Velvet Underground is not dead. The Oklahoma native JJ Cale ("After Midnight", "Cocaine") died on 25/26 July 2013. This one, John "Davies" Cale is still kicking. He has an OBE from the Queen, though probably not specifically for this Elvis Presley rendition!

And he popularized Hallelujah in Shrek
@Muddyrich
@Muddyrich 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertogalvez2423 well Shrek popularized his Hallelujah. I saw him perform it on a piano in Central Park about 10 years before Shrek. Devastating, even on a sunny summer's day. Kudos to the Shrek music supervisor who chose his version and not Jeff Buckley's (or Leonard's, for that matter)
@robertogalvez2423
@robertogalvez2423 2 жыл бұрын
@@Muddyrich I'm an old Cale fan. When I heard his Hallelujah in Shrek I could not believe it (John Cale in a cartoon movie???) and I was proud of him, because I thought he would finally leave his cult artist status, however his karma (?) or whatever happened made the version of Rufus Wainwright the one to be heard in the CD soundtrack. Many believe John's version is Rufus'.
@Muddyrich
@Muddyrich 2 жыл бұрын

So he was "dying," brilliant. I wish I could find more performances of his like this, from the late 1970s - early 1980s. I, too, was mystified by his possession of the credit card and the slip of paper...I assumed the lyrics were on the paper? Because he didn't look too sober in that clip...nevertheless he was good!
