Look, I'm British, there are great comedians from here, a lot, no doubt but also plenty from the States. It's not because Cleese is British that he's this good. He's just one of the best of all time. He said in another interview that he was pretty much inspired by US comedians in his youth. But that's the thing. As soon as you start to think internationally and shun borders thus freeing your mind, you can achieve real greatness. He is wonderful and Python wasn't just ahead of its time, it was out of time. I watched the life of Brian when I was a kid and thought that it was hilarious. Then I watched it as a teen and started to understand all the references and found it hilarious in a different way. Today when I rewatch it once in a while I admire the genius and think it is absolutely hilarious. This (amongst a lot of other works by the group) is sensational. It's silly in the best kind of way, it speaks to everyone and can be interpreted differently but still ends up being funny every time. I don't know what else to say: Chapeau!

To me, John Lithgow is the American Cleese. Which is to say erudite, tall, capable of great darkness and great glee, evervescent. Their careers have been very different, Cleese has rarely played villains, 3rd Rock From The Sun epitomises America's great 'gang comedy' charming sitcoms whereas Fawlty Towers epitomises the UK's 'one man against the others' exasperated sitcoms but Lithgow has a similiar statuesque bearing of command. Then there's Frasier, Friends , Seinfeld etc. These people are far from in Cleese's shadow. He just physically looms more and has that deliberately merciless, cold, Cambridge logic on occasion which polite American intellectuals tend to temper.
@AlanHope2013
@AlanHope2013 5 жыл бұрын
Rex4598 He also has a comedy history longer than the Bible, and has worked with all of the greats. He sometimes goes off track when he natters on about divorce and politics, but this man is a comedy giant. I can't think of an American comedian -- or a British one either, since Barker died -- who has his pedigree. while the others are puffing and panting to keep up ........................................................................................................................................................he's way out here.

Very insightful. My Mum has been threatening to die for 50 years too. She specialises in the topic "The shortcomings of others". I took care of my grandmother, who had severe dementia. Was absolutely heartbreaking, I loved her so much. She also had a really dark sense of humor. We both did. She asked me to have mercy and take her life so she wouldn't have to suffer anymore. I said, "Aww... Okay." And proceeded to lower a pillow over her face, while she looked on in terror. I left it there for a second or two, lifted it off and gave her a big stupid grin, and we both cackled and hooted for about 2 minutes straight. That laugh has kept me alive. I miss you grandma, we'll be together again.
