There are two scenes which I've seen in theaters where I almost passed out from laughing. I guess if I had a heart condition I could have died. The first was in Naked Gun (yes I saw this when it came out) when Lt. Drebin is in the car with a student and the perfectly cast driving instructor John Houseman says very calmly "Normally we would not be driving 65 [MPH] down the wrong way of a one way street." The second was Bruno when Bruno talks about his sex life and how it's very "vanilla" and then shows an almost X-rated scene of the most bizarre gay sex ever.

I don't know, but I think that must have been written by Michael Palin and Terry Jones, not John Cleese and Graham Chapman. It has that bizarreness of the famous Palin/Jones sketches like the Spanish Inquisition and the Silly Walks, not the wordy sketches with lots of synonyms like Cleese and Chapman's sketches like the Dead Parrot and the Cheese Shop. So Cleese might not associate much with the Funniest Joke sketch. Or maybe he had something to do with the second half, the WWII segment. It's aways struck me that the sketch radically changes gears midway.

@@toAdmiller Thanks! I saw this RFC- sketch only once, nearly 30 years ago and I didn't remember the name very well. I think, you are right about the Colonel (I never knew, that was a Colonel's uniform. I'm not so familiar with brit. uniforms). There was no name. I liked their military sketches a lot. But a bit more, I liked Rowan Atkinson as Black Adder. Particularly in WWI, it was often a persiflage on Winston Churchill ( I joined the army to fight people in the colonies who attack me with bananas and not to oppose hordes of Germans armed to the teeth ...) Both, Atkinson and Cleese, are people with a clear mind. Atkinson f.e. have 20 points IQ more, than Albert Einstein. A very bright candle... Greeds from Germany...

I hadn't heard that one about the expiry of the Danish dentist. It reminded me very strongly of what happened to me the first time I was exposed to Monty Python's Flying Circus. Here I was, a rather naïve 22 year old just returned to my home country of the UK after seven years in culturally isolated, insular South Africa. One night, finding myself at a loose end I decided to go to the cinema. One of the films playing was 'And Now for Something Completely Different'. By the time it got to the Parrot Sketch, I was already in trouble. Came the Adventure Tours sketch and I was having great difficulty in breathing. I thought I might have to leave the theatre it became so severe. Fortunately, though, I was young and fit and managed to sit through the entire film. Completely taken by surprise, I had never laughed so much!

With reference to the Dane who died laughing, I went with my Canadian husband to the first showing in the US of "Now For Something Completely Different". The cinema was packed and I was literally the only person laughing. Everyone else in the audience was stunned into silence. I am English by the way. As we were leaving, I asked my husband what he thought of the film. He said, "Well, it was worth it just to watch you!"

Well, he DID show up a couple of times as a gag, did stuff like slam Vince Mcmahon, move to the side and cheer for himself while the real action went on in the ring... ...just like he always does XD He and his trumpster fans even used it to insult CNN a while ago, remember? giphy.com/gifs/reactionseditor-trump-wrestling-3ohryCNP6uXSqXAoGA I think those few moments have been staged so he COULD get the hall of fame entry to begin with... you know, meeting the min. requirement of actually particitpating somehow

I don't view numbers figuratively because numbers are concrete. But even taking your statement figuratively results in an untruth, as his legacy is already set. Not even his humor dies with him.

Howard Beale John Cleese is the last surviving major representative of a certain type of British post-war comedy which started with the Goons then influenced Beyond the Fringe (the early 60s satire "boom") and later on, Monty Python. When he goes, it will put a stop to Python as surely as the death of John Lennon underscored the end of the Beatles.

@@jonq8714 (Stolen from John Cleese's eulogy of Graham Chapman) He has ceased to be, bereft of life, he rests in peace, he has kicked the bucket, hopped the twig, bit the dust, snuffed it, breathed his last, and gone to meet the Great Head of Light Entertainment in the sky, and I guess that we’re all thinking how sad it is that a man of such talent, such capability and kindness, of such intelligence should now be so suddenly spirited away at the age of only sixty-two, before he’d achieved many of the things of which he was capable, and before he’d had enough fun.

Young people who've never heard of A Fish Called Wanda, PLEASE watch it. It is a comedy masterpiece, possibly the funniest film ever made, yet no one really talks about it anymore. All of the actors are known for more popular things, like Jamie Lee Curtis's horror films, Kevin Kline's dramatic films (despite his Oscar winning comedic performance, which never happens), and everyone else for Monty Python. Please watch it and keep the love for it alive! You honestly owe it to yourself ;)
