That takes me back! Way back! I am German and watched Monty Python on German TV as a teenager. It was all dubbed into German - the lip-synchs weren't too bad) - in the mid-1970s. Back then, nobody I knew had even heard of Monty Python (I must have had crappy friends, godallmighty!). It was as if I had struck gold - finally people who shared my sense of humour! Couldn't get enough of the gang!

There is this great skit of Monty Python, "bavarian restaurant", where you can see Cleese speaking German. He has a little accent, but he totally nails the pronunciation!

I still remeber the sketch with him in a "typical german restaurant": "JA, im Bavaria!! Wo die Stühle noch aus Holz sind!!" ("Yes, in the Bavaria!! Where the chairs are still wooden!!") It was so stupid and senseless that it was funny again :-D

Actually psycholinguistic experiments suggest that the mental representation of the syncretic "die" as well as strong adjectives ending with "-e" carry no morphosyntactic features regarding case, number and gender. See Opitz et al. 2013 and for female nouns Opitz & Pechmann 2014.
