“I don’t collect stamps for monetary value…I collect them because I love the hobby.” Exactly.

US poetess Emily Dickinson wrote in a poem that that, "Books take one worlds away." Stamp collecting does that in spades with actual pictures. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt also collected stamps. And I learned, as had others before me, that during illness there is no greater stress relief than that of stamp collecting. Need to get lost to escape stress? -- collect stamps, and seek what any particular issue represents; WW II Norwegian stamps history fascinates.

These are great for British history lessons. This is also a good reminder that stamps aren't just something to put in a folder, then forget them. I need to pull out my Canadian collection and do more research.

@@johncollectsstamps …which is why I chose to collect Canadian stamps in the first place: to learn about the country my mother’s family is from. Thanks for the reminder.

A correction is needed for the Downey Head designs. You state there are two watermarks used. That is incorrect. There are three. According to the Stanley Gibbons catalogue, the first pair of Downey Heads 1911-12 were imprinted with Wmk 49, Imperial Crown. The watermark was changed in August 1912 to Wmk 100, Simple Royal Cypher, then again in September 1912 to Wmk 103, Multiple Royal Cypher.

You showed the multiple cypher not the block cypher. The former was used for the 1913 1/2d and 1d coil stamps. You also might mention that Somerset House printed the 6d from 1911 till 1933 when Harrison and Sons took over the entire Mackennal issue in 1934. The photogravure issue did not have a 6d so the Mackennal version was printed till 1938. The first 5/- you showed seems too light for Waterlow 1913. The perforation seems to indicate De La Rue. Keep up the good work!

It always amazes me how much complexity underlies the seemingly straightforward George V issues. Between watermark changes, design subtleties, printer changes, and colour varieties, you can easily end up filling dozens of album pages with these stamps. I use the SG Concise Catalogue as my guide, but every now and again I crack open the Specialized Catalogue and am in awe... Ironic that the collector King left this rich heritage!
