Chris Sahar here - John's channel brought me special joy as I believe I was one of the first to send him stamps from the US in response to seeing one of his episodes. John generously reciprocated and sent a few more. This sparked others to send some -- some far more generous than I was. Excellent presenter and wonderful philatelist. Judging from his channel he seemed like a lovely guy and father!

The passing of John is such sad news. I’ve been watching his videos since 2011 and just loved his passion for stamps. John’s videos are full of great information and being a Machin collector myself, I found John to be a great helper in building and understanding my collection. After watching this last episode I immediately went on line looking for Czeslaw Slania’s SG2078 1999 £1 large Machin. Thankfully I found one and it will always remind me of.:- ‘John Collects Stamps’. Please keep John’s videos on KZbin for a while longer because I’m sure I’ve missed a few of them along the way. RIP John.

What a wonderful person that infected his passion of stamps with everyone. Slania. Another great episode John, very enjoyable. I especially like the Maritime Heritage and Pillar Boxes sets. I collect Faroe Islands and as you noted, Slania has engraved a lot of their issues and they are all spectacular. I had a wonderful trip to London last week and my hosts commented that I picked the right week in regards to the weather; every day was perfect. My trip(s) to Stanley Gibbons were a highlight for me.

John, an other great video. I had not realized that Czeslaw Slania had engraved so many British Stamps. The set with the Ships would be a great addition to my collection especially the one with Henry VIII for my collection of British Monarchs, and the ones of Lords Fisher and Cunningham for my Churchill related collection.

Czeslaw Slania (1921-2005) was a renowned Polish-born engraver who achieved international recognition for his exceptional skills in stamp engraving. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest stamp engravers in history. Slania was born on October 22, 1921, in the town of Bromberg (now Bydgoszcz) in Poland. He displayed an early talent for art and pursued his passion for engraving. After World War II, Slania studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Krakow, Poland. In 1948, Slania began his career as a stamp engraver for the Polish State Printing Works. His talent and craftsmanship quickly gained attention, and he became known for his extraordinary precision and attention to detail. Over his career spanning more than 50 years, Slania engraved stamps for numerous countries around the world, including Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Great Britain, the United States, Australia, and many others. His engravings covered a wide range of subjects, including historical figures, cultural icons, wildlife, and landmarks. Slania's engraving technique was characterized by its remarkable intricacy and the ability to capture even the finest details. He employed line engraving, a traditional method that involves etching lines onto a metal plate, allowing for exquisite precision and shading effects. Slania's work earned him widespread acclaim and numerous awards, including the title of "Court Engraver" in Sweden. He also held the Guinness World Record for the most postage stamps engraved by an individual, with over 1,000 different stamp designs to his name. Czeslaw Slania's contributions to stamp engraving elevated the art form and left an indelible mark on the philatelic world. His engravings continue to be highly sought after by collectors and are cherished for their exceptional craftsmanship and artistic beauty.
