Oscar Peterson: piano
Comment
In the first set, recorded on March 28, 1960 in Dusseldorf, Germany, Coltrane was unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight when Miles Davis was unable play that day. It’s basically a performance of the Miles Davis Quintet without Davis. The lineup includes Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums.
The film was made during a European tour billed as “Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic Presents Jazz Winners of 1960.” Two of the other “Jazz Winners” were Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson, both of whom join Coltrane and the band near the end of the Dusseldorf set. Getz plays on the last few songs. It’s a historic session-the only known recording of the two great saxophone players performing together. At the beginning of the final song, Thelonious Monk’s “Hackensack,” Peterson taps Kelly on the shoulder and takes over on the piano. (Mark Springer/Openculture)

the "advertisers" dont choose where to place the ads... The only 2 required are the start and end of video. The ads in the middle of a video are put there intentionally by the video poster. @ebjazz93 is the one profiting off the ads and has to manually select where to place them. Hes the a hole.

I first saw John Coltrane Live at a little dive just north of Hollywood Blvd. named Shelly's Mann-Hole. Anybody interested in L.A'.s serious Jazz back in the 60s, "The Mann Hole" was the place for the urban jazz snobs like me. I was 15-16 years old then. My old man listened to Louis Armstrong. and played a little free-form jazz on the piano. I was amazed because he had never studied the rules and played without sheet music. Charles Lloyd fronted Coletrane that night at the Hole. Unfortunately, Lloyd left for Europe early in his career and stayed. Too bad I appreciated what he was doing. I've had the privilege of some great musicians there. One of my favorite musicians and pianist was Theolonius Monk. His quirky personality was at its height. Watching this video on KZbin brings back some fine memories.
