I hate to see that comments on this song are years old. This song is a classic in as much as Jason and the Golden Fleece, or Beowulf is classic literature. So too this song is classic country and tells the story of a place we have all been. Wether you live in Texas, or if you live in New Jersey, this song speaks to all.

My uncle Frank wrote the lyrics to this song! Frank (George) Baber and John Conlee were great friends. My Uncle Frank was an Army drill sergeant and a very physically imposing man. Standing next to Conlee, he was a giant, but he wrote these touching and personal lyrics. What a great song.

John Conley has one of the most pitch perfect voices in all of Country music. He is never sharp or flat and he has great breath control. His Southern accent comes through his throat and chest and not through his nose. It is very pleasing to listen to and he could make just about any female fall in love with whomever they were with and the guy was clever enough to play his songs for her.

I love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jason Walding, if it's old, so am I. This song came out in 1978, I had been married 2 years, and was 20 years old. I have listened to CM for 61 years. I am an old lady now, and my family on both sides has deserted me. Including my son and his icky girlfriend. My husband couldn't help it; he had Pancreatic Cancer. He fought like Hell, for 2 years because it would kill me when he died. I'll die alone, and that want I want now. No one needs to come around then. They were not here when I needed them, so they do not need to bother me later. I got a dog, she doesn't steal, hit me, and treat me like crap!!!

In 1990 I was a Captain in the Air Force. Six years of marriage was about to end and my wife had some serious medical issues. I heard this song as I was getting off the highway outside of the base one morning and it brought me to tears. I had to pull over and compose myself before going through the gate into the base. This song helped pull me through that time and 33 years of marriage. Until just recently, it would always bring a tear to my eyes whenever I heard it. I wanted to take my wife to one of his concerts for our 30th anniversary and rekindle what was once a great romance but it didn't work out. Two years later she filed for divorce. I have this song on a sound track I listen to frequently. No more tears but now I just love to hear John Conlee sing it.

He asked me where I lived...I told him Mobile Alabama...he said he really enjoyed coming to Mobile...then I told him I had seen him in concert in Mobile about 7 times. He just came back to Mobile about 2 mths ago...I got tickets AGAIN to see him & got to meet him again...then I told him about meeting him in Nitro W.V...HE SAID HE ACTUALLY REMEMBERED THAT MEETING!!! Me! Honest, this dear man played at the auditorium at my old Central School. I went with my Mom, wearing the dress I wore for my 3rd or 4th Grade Class Photo. I was honored to be by my Mom's side. I was her shadow she said. I'll always live my Mother, Father, and music! ❤😊

@@kristinesmart3134 sounds like an awesome memory. I think about my mom and dad every day. I would give anything just to be able to pick up the phone and talk to them. They carried so much wisdom. Some of it I was lucky enough to get.

John conlee is a country national treasure. Recorded songs that resonated with common everyday people. Songs that maybe got you through another day or a sunny day on a ride with loved ones. Songs like these are the closest things we have to a Time Machine, that takes you back to a place in your life that just felt right.

No matter how unlucky I’ve been at times in my life, I was lucky I lived during the music era I did 60’s,70’s,80’s, and some of the 90’s… I’ll take it and die with a smile…

This Is real music. I'm 29 years old and as long as I can remember I've loved nothing but the old country greats like John Conlee! How many of today's artist can sit with nothing but a voice and microphone and sound as good as John and the other real country music makers. As George Jones said In his song. Whose gonna fill their shoes? Vince Gill answered that question perfectly at George Jones funeral and he said I believe they don't make those shoes anymore and that's very true.

John was played on radio constantly when I was a kid. Another Great in Concert was Ray Price. He stay at every concert till the last person got their autograph. He never took a dime of the songwriters money. Last album he made was Beauty IS and dedicated to his wife. He was dying of pancreatic cancer, cut the album in nov and past away in December. They did zero enhancements to his voice.
