“Truth Be Told” Scouting Report By John Stuper
from SHOWBALL, Boston July 13-14 2022
John Mitchell. Team Turquoise #6
John is a RHP / INF in the class of 2024. John has a chance to be a two way player in college. Two way players are a coach’s best friend because you’re basically getting two players in one uniform.
As a pitcher, he runs his fastball up to 86. He has a solid delivery which he can repeat. I think he has the makings of a really good breaking ball. This will definitely be an option in college.
Many two way players look like pitchers when they play the infield. Long arm swing, not the most athletic actions….but this kid is different.
When he is on the mound, he looks like a pitcher. But when he’s in the infield, well, his actions are outstanding. Good hands and feet, and, no surprise, enough arm to play the left side. Really liked him in the infield. This kid is an athlete.
At the plate, I thought his swing could get a little long at times, but his bat to ball skills are really good, so he is able to barrel balls with good hand eye coordination and just a knack for doing it. And his exit velos from both sides were pretty good.
Added strength will help him in every phase of his game. Overall strength. The best way to obtain that is to use the compound lifts in the gym: bench, squat, and deadlift. They are called compound lifts because they engage the most muscles. Make sure you are supervised to ensure proper technique.
John’s biggest question moving forward, in my view, is whether to remain a two way guy. He is certainly capable. I coached many two way players in my career. The one thing I constantly kept in mind was that I did not want them to be good at two things if they could be great at one. You and your next coach will have to decide that.
With a fastball already hitting 86, I think his ceiling is higher on the mound, but it really is a tough call. Switch hitting two way guy who can also pitch? Huge upside to all of this.
I think he will either be a two way at D1 or a D1 pitcher. If his velo creeps up even more, I’d say the latter. Lots of work ahead, but this kid is one to watch.
